I got a call on Tues. telling me what the cost would be and that I could pick them up Weds. I liked the personal service we got from Dan the owner. He knows his stuff that's for sure! He ought to, they have been in business over 50 yrs. All of the work is done right there on site. Don't let this small shop fool you. The customer service & work were far better than the large chains. Also, the work done was very affordable. I will be going there any time I need work done in the future!

My sister and I spent a long weekend in Saugatuck, but we stopped in Holland before heading there,…read moreto explore the shops and have lunch. I'd been through years ago, in college, but don't remember much about it back then. Now, it's a really cute town, and the main shopping area was filled with great little independent shops. We stopped in at The Blackbird, and were immediately reminded of one of our favorite places, Cedarburg, WI, where the town's old woolen mill was turned into cute little shops. It even smelled like the Cedarburg shops (they sell yummy smelling candles at the Blackbird)! In any case, the shop may not be for everyone, but my sister and I love all things bird, and there were a lot of bird themed items, from figurines to useful things like hooks and hanging racks, etc. They had some really nice area rugs and a huge variety of artwork, most with more "country" inspired themes, so again, it may not be to everyone's taste, but I'm pretty eclectic, and love antiques and sleek modern things. If my boyfriend hadn't put a moratorium on the number of tchotchkes I can bring into the house, I'd have gone to town shopping! Instead, I only purchased the cutest children's book for the children of a friend (Memoirs of a Hamster), and a Warren Kimble pillow with a rabbit on it, for a bunny loving friend's upcoming birthday. If I'm ever in Holland again, I will definitely stop in to the Blackbird, and hopefully buy something wonderful for myself!

They can help you choose the right type of yarn for your project and are very familiar with the behavior of the yarns after washing and drying (for both knitting and weaving). Spectacular shop! Using sand from the Saugatuck area he has fashioned a number of shapes. The truly interesting thing about the process is the unique greenish color that is created by the sand. Currently the pieces are between 4-7 inches high. I'm looking forward to my next visit to see how he expands his exploration of sand from different geographies. I was initially drawn into the gallery by the bright, modern ceramic pieces which I gather was Jeff's original artistic pursuit. These vary in size probably 6-18 inches. Truly enjoyed speaking with the artist and being exposed to his enthusiasm for his new endeavor. Make sure you make time for this stop.

The artist/owner was there and he told us about some of his pieces, including these really cool vases that were inspired by fireflies - you can use a laser light to make patterns on them that glow for a second in the dark. It was so unique and unlike anything I'd ever seen before! He also makes glow in the dark glass pieces which were very interesting. He uses a lot of bold colors that I was drawn to. I didn't happen to notice any pricing because I wasn't really looking to buy anything, but he was so friendly and kind that I'd definitely stop in again when I'm in town next!
