Like many folks during the pandemic, I've been slacking with my personal health. Partially due to incredibly painful shin splints, partly due to sheer laziness. I thought if I was going to start exercising again, I should visit somewhere with expertise on the matter. I was greeted almost immediately once I entered into the store, and learned a lot about running shoes in half an hour than I ever did in my life. Running on old basketball shoes, I had never experienced proper running shoes and they are an absolute game changer. The pronation that I had after testing them was heavily corrected, and I could feel my posture change after a cool off period. The staff took the time to tailor their suggestions to your specific needs, were informative, courteous, and overall it was a joy to come visit. It seemed anyone from a beginner to the seasoned runner was welcomed, and I felt relaxed versus if I were to go to other specialty stores. My experience at the store wasn't really that amazing and the worker I was with was kind of unfriendly, but it was a quick visit since I was just looking for a new pair of running shoes. I asked some question about the clothing merchandise which he didn't really answer and when I was trying on shoes, it seems like he was more making fun of me going quickly than helping me find something I like since I'm not an actually runner. I wanted a little personal touch going into a store, but this place didn't do it for me. Buy online, they're cheaper! Philadelphia Runner (PR) is just plain awesome. It is more than just the products that they sell. Well, they have a great selection and prices are on point. Still, it is more. Its the mini and training runs they sponsor, guide, or highlight. Its the staff, available to answer questions and provide support even if it may not be tied to a sale. I'm here at least once a month for their team up with Shake Shack. I see the marathon training runs they host. And I buy my shoes here. Good running shoes. I had to stop at Philly Runner while visiting the city for the first time after my friend told me about her amazing experience at another location, and I'm so glad I did! Coincidentally the woman who helped her at the other location is now at this one so I got the same top notch service. Takia executed my shoe fitting perfectly by explaining things to me every step of the way. She was patient, diligent, professional and extremely knowledgeable. She changed my (shoe and fitness) life!! I was wearing the kids equivalent to a women's 8.5 when I really needed a women's 10 because unbeknownst to me my right foot is quite larger than my left. I also learned that we need to allow our feet to breathe since they swell during workout - who knew?! This experience was 110% without flaw. I wasn't being up-sold to, or even sold to for that matter. It felt effortless and I was happy to whip out my wallet to seal the deal. 5 stars for Takia and Jenn! Way to make a girl feel valued! I've been coming to Philadelphia Runner since moving to Philly and I've bought a few pairs of shoes here, but I really need to leave a review! All my experiences have been great at different branches of PR, and the Walnut Street team are excellent. Sarah and Amanda were so helpful in getting me fitted for new shoes. I have quite awkwardly wide feet so this is no easy task! I was thinking about switching to a new kind of shoe after wearing ASICS for a long time, and they gave me really useful advice about the kind of support I might need. They gave me a lot of options to choose from and gave me plenty of time to pick, so I never felt pressured to make a decision. In the end I opted with Brooks and I am so pleased with them. Shoes and more shoes! Heaven! One of the more popular & premiere specialty running shops in city center Philadelphia is the Philadelphia Runner. Truth be told that I was looking for shoes myself on the Eve of the 2014 Delaware marathon. One for myself (relief shoes) and one for a friend of mine, whom happened to not pack her shoes before leaving for the airport. This debacle steered me here in search of such shoes instead of just lounging around and having a few beers to prep for the marathon the next morning. With that in mind, I called ahead to the other Philadelphia Runner location on Sansom street and they told me that they didn't have one I needed. I walked here to this 36th Street / Walnut Street location from the 30th Street Amtrak station and it was interesting and had some hope. While the experience here at Philadelphia runner was good, I did not locate the shoes that I was looking for for my friend. We did find a pair in Bryn Marr, though. I arrived here around 11:30am on a Saturday. The shop was empty, with two sales people at the front desk chatting away. They seemed helpful when I walked in and smiled. I explained my situation and noted to them that we were needing them for the marathon in Delaware the next day. While they were checking their inventory, I looked around on what they had in the store. I needed some stuff, so I bought some stuff to refresh and reload for the marathon I was to run the next morning. I was dismayed that they didn't have the shoes for my friend either. They do have a wide assortment of shoes and runner related accessories and accepts credit cards, so that's always a plus. Public transit and street parking is both an option here, however you get here. Just get here! For me, traveling on foot was my own option at the time. Guess I wasn't really thinking. Hahah. Its a crazy life of a marathon maniac! The service was great and friendly. The store wasn't too big, but they had the most complete inventory you could really want for a running store. Whether you are a newbie or a veteran marathoner, this place is definitely for you! While my friend wanted a real specific brand and model shoe, I guess that's the only exception. Philadelphia Runner is the one to go to. While the prices for shoes tend to be with what is industry standard pricing, you can find a good shoe for your needs. They have professionals to help you fit into the shoe you need that's comfortable, so you can enjoy the ride. I personally was looking for Hokas, but they did not have the one I was looking for. Plus, the shoes that I currently wear was kind of outside my price range anyway. Yes, good running shoes can be expensive, but it's better to get properly fitted than get injured out there training. Philadelphia Runner does offer gait analysis to see how you run, which makes it better for them to determine the best shoe possible for you! Walking into Philly Runner is like walking into the Nordstroms of department stores. Not getting it? Let me explain. They carry awesome but slightly more expensive stuff. And the staff approaches you every five seconds to make sure you're doing alright, and hey do you need any help? etc etc... It's like they work on commission, sheesh. And you know you're leaving with a good quality item that they will take back (even when used!) if you don't like it. I stopped by the store this morning to get a new pair of running shoes. I've been wearing my old adidas for years and they were on their last legs. The store was fairly empty on a weekday morning. All the better for me to be able to try on shoes and get great customer service. The man who helped me was friendly and knowledgeable. He pulled 3 pairs of shoes for me to try and recommended a stability shoe based on my old shoes, which I brought in. He also was able to tell me which shoes were too tight. I noticed they also have a treadmill in the store, probably for gait analysis. I also got some energy gels. All in all a very easy transaction and a nice conveniently located store. read more

Love this place so much. The first time I went, I needed to quickly get some new sneakers - they asked me to specify what activity I would need them for, measured my feet, and then provided a couple of what they considered the best options, and specified why other shoes I asked about wouldn't be as good for my needs - I was out in minutes, confident that I had exactly the shoes I needed. I've gone back multiple times for other gear and they are always so honest, even when it would mean I would leave empty handed. While they have had some good--really good, as in 50% or more off--sales, this is not for the Modell/Payless/cheapskate types. The prices are reasonable and fair, but not (except during sales) rock bottom. This is the store you go to because the people who work there are knowledgeable and helpful. They are not high school kids hired to find boxes of shoes in the storage room. The staff clearly know their business. They don't try to sell you a bunch of junk; in fact, they will discourage you from pointless purchases, my specialty. They not only know shoes, they know the issues related to running and walking, and can help you with correcting them as appropriate through the gear you select. I was having some serious shin flints (pain up the front of my legs) which were getting in the way of jogging or even walking. The guy who waited on me evaluated my gait and then suggested some particular shoes and an insert: worked beautifully. No more shin splints since, and I'm walking and running an average 5 miles per day. I've subsequently been back for other shoes and advice, as have some family members, and it's been spot on. They are a valuable addition to West Philadelphia, and we should do what we can to keep them here. Such expertise is worth a couple of extra dollars on a pair of shoes. I normally don't have much luck with "running" stores, because I'm not a runner and I generally don't wear running shoes. I like the simple, casual sneakers that feel comfy and look straightforward but stylish. And this place has them, and has a good selection, several styles of saucony and asics casual sneakers, with several colors of each style. Much more than I've found even in larger stores. Casual sneakers can be tough to find, especially for men, and especially in any selection of colors and styles. And this place has it all...for a small store and for a store that clearly specializes in serving runners, I am impressed. They had a few decent sale items too, which I will note, were comparable to what I was able to find online. Prices are fair, not high, not low. But the sale items were very good deals--as good as you'll find online. Staff was very friendly. I got a good vibe from this place and would both come back, and recommend it to others. I bought a pair of sneakers and have been very happy with them. I would definitely shop here again. read more

Great experience investing in my first pair of real running shoes. I've had knee problems for years and was running on shoes without enough support and my arches were killing me. Anyway, the sales associate was super patient and helpful and assessed my gate and let me try on nearly a dozen shoes to make sure I got the right fit. After trying on a bunch and testing them on their treadmill, I ended up with a solid pair that I tried out as soon as I got home - in less than 24 hours I have no knee or arch pain which is just awesome. Totally worth the time and investment to get fitted for a great pair of shoes here. The staff is great and the selection is solid. This was my first time in an official "running store" and I came to PHILADELPHIA RUNNER based off of a friend's recommendation. I informed the sales associate ( his name is Ross) that I was fairly new to running and he kindly walked me through the assessment for selecting an appropriate running shoe (your arch sitting down & standing up, ...etc). I didn't feel pressured to buy anything I didn't need since Ross was straightforward with me. Even though I liked the first pair that I tried on he took the time to show me several brands that were a fit for me. The store has a decent selection of shoes although their prices are above average. I purchased a pair of Nike's that same day and I am very happy with them. read more

Very friendly and took the time to run through every option of shoe and insole type. Man was I shocked when I went to this Philadelphia Runner. I stopped by this location for the first time for their sidewalk sale (which was a great bargain). The people outside were incredibly helpful, and they had an amazing number of great shoes on sale. I was so excited with my shoes -- I even picked up a matching pair for my mom since I knew she would love them too. This trouble is when I went to go check out. The woman checking me out was probably the most apathetic person I met. She seemed completely disinterested in being there and made sure other people knew. When I went to check out, I paused and double checked the sizes on the boxes to make sure I picked up my mom's size right. She gave me the biggest look of impatience and then said: "Both of them?" as if judging me for buying two pairs of shoes? I'm not sure. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. Everyone has bad days, so I tried to be a bit more polite and a bit more kind. Her attitude did not change whatsoever during the encounter. I noticed a sign on the counter about the rewards program, and I asked about it. It said you could earn $25 for every $300 you spent. I asked the man behind the counter-- who was very kind about explaining the program to me. I asked if it was too late to put the purchase from today on for the rewards program since I was spending $150+. Before he could even answer, the woman interrupted him and basically said no and handed me my receipts. Now I'm not sure if I could have put it on or not, but the attitude she gave was that she simply did not want to so she was going to say "no". I thought this was all in my head like maybe I was being oversensitive to her behavior. However, the customer waiting in line after me must have noticed and helped me out by trying to stand up for me. "Tell her to void it then" she said from behind me. That's when I realized that the person behind the counter was just extremely rude and just being a terrible person in customer service. It was one of the moments that, looking back, I wish I had been more assertive or had tried to push back a little. I should have realized earlier. The woman from the counter talked to the person behind me saying "it's a sale"-- as if just because I spent money from a sale, it didn't count as money? But I didn't realize how that could have mattered if I wanted to simply open a rewards account? I'm not sure what was going on at that point. The customer behind me looked at me like "Aren't you going to do something?" and said "You're the customer!" I just was a bit upset and flustered at this point while the woman behind the counter kept on saying (still rudely)-- "It's a sale". I just want to emphasize that the encounter and attitude of the woman behind the counter was the issue- not whether or not I could join a rewards program (though it would have been nice to). I know this isn't Philadelphia Runner, and I'd like to think this was a one time off-experience because the experiences I had at the Rittenhouse location and with all the other staff members at this location were the exact opposite. I didn't want to give a 1 star, because they were so helpful, but this one interaction left such a bad taste in my mouth and was just an awful experience. I had started by being really excited about getting a pair of new shoes (and surprising my mom with a matching pair) to being throughly bummed out. What a disappointment. read more

I've now purchased three running shoes from Philadelphia Runner (2x from Center City and 1x from University City). Each time, I've been impressed with the staff's professionalism and knowledge. Their fit process is helpful in finding the right shoe for my neutral pronation and high arches. I recently brought in a pair of shoes I purchased from Amazon that gave me a heel blister and the person was happy to help assess the fit of that shoe. I ended up returning my shoes to Amazon and buying a different pair from Philadelphia Runner. A day later, I noticed the manufacturer's website had a markdown on the shoes I purchased. So I'm a fat kid that started running. And when the shoes I was running in started to give me blisters, I thought it was a life long lack of running more than a mile or two. Little did I know, there was a better way.... And Philly Runners, thank you for showing me that better way. I walked into their University City location and despite my lack of running shoe knowledge, they evaluated my gait, and promptly came up with several options to alleviate my blister issues. AND I got no judgement for them for running all over the store to try out the shoes! Finally, with my 1/2 Marathon Goal rapidly approaching, they were more than happy to help find a different pair of shoes if these did not work out. But they worked! Disappointing. I was really excited to buy shoes from this store, I have been choosing to support small businesses in light of COVID-19, however, my experience was less than mediocre. I ordered shoes for in-store pick up since I knew which model I wanted. The day after placing my order, I was walking down Walnut running errands, and decided to pop-in to the store to check if my order was ready for pick up. The staff was apathetic, rude, seemingly annoyed that I asked about my order. I was told that my shoes weren't ready yet and that I needed to wait for them to contact me. I politely thanked them, although I wondered why it would take more than a day to have my order ready for pick up. Another day goes by without a call, so I decided to call and check-in. I was informed that my order has been sitting on the hold shelf for me and that they forgot to contact me. I raced over to the store to pick them up since it was approaching closing time. When I arrive, the shoes are still not ready, someone had to go outside the store to go get them (?) even though I had called 20 minutes earlier about coming in. The staff proceeded to ignore me while another worker went to get my shoes. As a veteran small business worker, I am extremely understanding and always give the benefit of the doubt, but this was no way to treat a new customer. Please do not come to this location with any expectation to be treated as a valued customer-- sadly, you will be disappointed. read more

He brought out four almost identical pairs from different brands to ensure the best possible fit. Per the norm, the staff is very friendly and helpful, cannot say enough about how well they approach and interact w/ customers. I drove into Phila from suburbs at least 25 miles looking for a running jacket, thinking that they would have a great selection given theoutstanding reviews across theboard. The store had a miniscule to invisible selection of jackets, 3-4 nike jackets on the rack and very little else. Very disappointing. Almost all of the running specific stores in the suburbs have a selection at least 5-10 times more plentiful. Maybe the great reviews are based solely on shoes but in terms of apparel and other things the store is drastically short. Why pay Walnut street rent and not stock well for things like jackets which are fairly important in the colder season? read more
