They let me sit and conversed with us equally while we waited for his stylist to be ready. Inside it was very retro barber-esc. He has been three times now, and I wanted to let him go a few times before reviewing. That said I am so happy we found this place for him after he moved from his old barber. He really enjoys his haircuts every time he goes. It always looks so similar to the picture he wants / how he describes. It's also awesome that he has been to multiple stylist's who work here and have enjoyed each of the cuts equally. Definitely give them a try, even if you have hair-cut anxiety or aren't sure exactly what you want.

Question: How do you know a hair stylist is worth his salt?…read more Answer: When your cut looks FAB even on a "bad hair" day! I'm an artist. To say that I'm very particular about the way things look is an understatement. In my world aesthetics are everything. If it were not for Tommy Gentekos, I would still be standing in the bathroom, holding a mirror in one hand, and scissors in the other, trying desperately to give myself a shape up with varied results. Some people are just born into a profession and Tommy possesses an innate talent.

And what's not to like about that? The inside of the shop has really high ceilings and beautiful old-style classic crown mouldings, great light, lots of mirrors, etc. etc. I think Tommy Gentekos may be the only person who actually cuts hair. During my appointment on a weekday evening the customers (3) outnumbered the workers (Tommy and one other person). He uses all his own products and the conditioner smells fantastic. They also have little smock things that you can change into and keep your clothes from getting covered with hair, which was a nice touch. So the haircut. It's a good haircut. Not earth shattering or spectacularly creative or anything. But he gave me what I wanted and did a reasonable job of explaining why he wanted to cut things a certain way or whatever. That said, was it worth $60 pus tip? I think probably no. The quest for the ultimate Philadelphia haircut continues...

I don't let everyone do my brows, and have reluctantly floated around to different nail salons in…read morethe city trying to achieve a certain look. Unfortunately, most places are prone to over-plucking my thick brows, when most of the time I just want a subtle shaping or clean-up. Unfortunately, my requests most often get lost in translation. So, I was happy to see this place pop up in my Groupon search, and happier when I realized they are black-owned. I arrived on time, and waited in the car to be texted on when to come in. I appreciated them doing this for safety during this pandemic. Masks were worn and my temperature was also taken. I waited a bit long to be texted, but based on hearing her tell another customer they were running behind, I let that go. Everyone is adjusting to this new normal. Cortney did my brows and I think they came out looking great. I didn't even have to tell her to just do a soft arch and not overpluck them. I think she did one of the best jobs I have seen in years on these brows. I really can't overstate enough how frustrating it is how some of these salons just immediately go to taking off too much of my brow. Cortney was really pleasant, and I didn't have an issue getting an appt right away (no one answered the phone originally - so maybe they were overwhelmed). I think I'll return. Oh yeah, they also have a little parking lot.

Younger or new stylist require a little more guidance! Although this salon is listed as natural…read morehair care it may be mainly because of the products not because of knowledge related to hair texture or styles. I went in for a consultation two weeks before my actual appointment the stylist appeared knowledgeable but my results were less than desirable. I can say well after my appointment the dye job was perfect it has lasted longer than most applications. However, I showed a photo of the style I desired and I understand upfront my hair texture may not be the same as the person in the photo. But when you're chopping off your hair the cut should be close to the photo. It was a 'good' cut but, the thinning area on my sides were not considered when 'fading'. During my initial consultation the stylist said washing my hair will help to see the curl pattern it will help determine if I need twist or product for the desired look. None of that happened! My experience is really hard to explain I didn't get what I asked for but I was able to come home and work it out for myself. In the end I got a decent haircut and a good dye job so it wasn't a total bust. Would I go back or suggest this salon of 'natural hair care'? NOPE!

I'm not from the area and ended up driving about 45 mins to arrive, yet do not regret it one bit!…read more When I first walked in, my first impression of the place was that they mean business. Everyone was working diligently and paying close attention to their client's hair. The place was fogging up from all the smoke from the hair equipment so they had the back door opened. I didn't know what the routine was since it was my first time at the location. They looked at me and smiled and one lady asked me what I was getting done so I told her a wash and set and that my hair was natural. Being African American with kinky hair after it's washed can be an issue at Dominican hair salons; they're always offering a perm. Not this one. She said no prob, write my name and I can take a seat. I noticed some women getting their weaves washed and styled, as if it were their own and it looked good. That's def something to consider if you wish to get your weave washed. They have a little waiting area up front with magazines and the atmosphere is quite relaxed. They called me over in about 15 minutes for my wash, which is pretty good timing, especially on a Saturday. After my wash, I waited about 7 minutes for the next lady to roller set my hair. I think I was scheduled to be under the dryer for 45 mins to an hour. After about 37 minutes, I needed to put money in the meter. By the time I came back, someone else was placed at my dryer. I asked what's next, they asked me to sit in chair # 3. I was happy because that dryer was HOT lol ...and right away, a blonde Dominican lady came to blow dry and style my hair. She was awesome. We had great conversation, she put me at ease. I could speak a bit of Spanish so I'm not sure how much of a language barrier could've existed if I didn't (another lady speaks pretty good English so either way, they'll understand you). It was a great experience! I didn't feel her burning my scalp with the blow dryer. She was pretty quick. I asked her to focus on my roots since my ends are getting so thin, she listened. She gave me a nice trim. She listened when I asked her not to cut too much (I had to let her know that she could cut a little more, even... which is nice since to some, trim means chop). She curled it nicely and recommended I get a bonnet to sleep at night and run my fingers through the curls in the morning. She made me feel fabulous in her chair and I left the salon feeling like I was on top of the world :) My hair is a bit passed my shoulder when straightened. I did not get the deep conditioner, so I cannot comment on it. My wash and set, plus curling the ends with a flat iron and trim cost me $37. The other place I was considering going that morning was charging $57 and up, for a press and curl ...so this was a pretty good deal. One other thing, some of the clientele that walked in seemed a bit iffy but then again, I am not familiar with the area and the people in the neighborhood. Nonetheless, no one bothered anyone so it was fine to me. I would def recommend this place to others and will consider driving that 45 minutes again if I need to.
