I saw this Shoppers Drug Mart (SDM). It was perfect to get some. This SDM used to be Friar's Tavern. I grew up knowing that it was the Hard Rock Cafe. It shut down a few years ago. It is now a drug store. It's also a heritage Toronto site. Its location is decent. It's across from both CF Eaton Centre and Yonge-Dundas Square. There is a Green P parking lot under the latter, so you could technically park and casually shop here. This SDM has two floors. It does have an elevator to get you between the floors. Sadly, it was out of commission when I dropped by. If you require an elevator to get you between floors, you are out of luck here, unless it's now fixed. I walked up the stairs. I liked that it had a mini grocery store. I saw fresh produce, salads, and more. I found my mints. I got some peppermint Excel mints. Yay! There was a single human at the cashout area. I ended up using a self-checkout. I only had mints, so the transaction was simple. I paid with a debit card. I had my PC Optimum barcode scanned from my SDM app. Done! I'm glad that I got mints. They came in handy while watching the concert. I didn't really need a drink, so I saved a bit not getting one at Massey Hall and having minty-fresh breath. This SDM is cool. I like the location. The only downside is that the store closes at 9 pm. As a result, you can't get groceries or snacks after a show. (483)

Despite Covid, I managed to get some travelling in this year, and in fact, went on two trips in…read moreSeptember: the first one was to Toronto with my husband, to attend a friend's wedding, and the second one was to Louisville, KY, with my sister, to attend a concert. Due to the timing of the wedding in Toronto and the concert in Louisville, it didn't make any sense for me to fly back to Vancouver, so the plan was to fly directly from Toronto to Kentucky (while my husband flew back to Vancouver). However, because I was flying into the US, I had to get a Covid test. Thankfully testing requirements* to enter the US are much easier (and cheaper) than the requirements to enter Canada: you must have a negative Covid test (rapid negative antigen tests are acceptable) within three days of entering the US (as opposed to a PCR test within 72 hours of entering Canada). However, I had no idea where to get such a test in Toronto (or Vancouver, for that matter), so I turned to Yelp and was told that I could get tested at Shoppers Drug Mart for $40, an option not available in Vancouver. (Rapid antigen testing in Vancouver is $100+ and not quick or convenient to obtain.) I was flying out to Kentucky on September 7th and with my itinerary (Niagara Falls on the 4th, wedding on the 6th), and the three day timeframe, I wanted to book an appointment on September 5th. From Vancouver, I called the Shoppers Drug Mart closest to my hotel that offered rapid antigen testing and was told that they were all booked up until well after my travel date, and that I need to book an appointment at least a week in advance. As this was August 31st, I was worried. Thankfully the 279 Yonge Street location, which was the second closest Shoppers Drug Mart to my hotel, at a 20 minute walk, had an appointment available on September 5th. My husband and I arrived in Toronto the evening of September 2nd, and shortly after I arrived at our hotel, I received a phone call from Shoppers Drug Mart. Unfortunately they had to re-book my appointment due to a staffing shortage. I wasn't thrilled, but at least they called as soon as they realized they couldn't accommodate my appointment and re-booked me for the morning of September 6th. Despite the rescheduling, everything worked out in the end. My appointment went smoothly, and the results were ready within 15 minutes. Also, since my flight to Kentucky on September 7th was cancelled due to bad weather in Chicago and I didn't fly out until September 8th, I guess it was just as well that my Covid test was also postponed by a day. Covid testing for travel is a huge hassle (stay tuned for my experience trying to fly back into Canada), but at least it was easy at the Shopper Drug Mart at 279 Yonge Street. *Covid testing requirements and other Covid-related regulations are changing all the time, and the requirements mentioned in this post were accurate as of September 2021. Canadians know what Rexall is all about…read more As ubiquitous as the Maple Leaf, Tim Horton's, or hockey, Rexall has almost 9,000 locations across Canada. In downtown Toronto (with more than 40), it makes it seem like there's one on every block. For Americans, the closest comparison is Walgreen's ... but think how much more you'd like Walgreen's without the rip-off prices on non-sale items. That's Rexall. So with that in mind, what would make the the location at 48 Yonge Street -- which is more officially known as "Store 8197" -- special? Well, let's start with location: The corner of Yonge and Wellington. On my journey, I was at the famed Hotel Victoria ... putting us less than a block from the Rexall. That also puts you in a few blocks from the East Bayfront, ScotiaBank Arena, Berczy Park, Union Station, Sony Centre for the Performing Arts (soon to be Meridian Hall), across the street from the Hockey Hall of Fame, and very very close to about a zillion other things you'll want to do and see in Toronto. Are all Rexall's the same? Pretty-much. Each (or at least most) have an excellent pharmacy for all those good drugs you get with that freeish healthcare Canada gives its lucky citizens. Pleasant service. A whole bunch of candy selections. It's the best place for fellow travelers to pick up those health, hair, and beauty items they forgot at home ... and at actually very reasonable prices. I was gobsmacked to pay $5 ($3.75 US) for a 6-pack of 710mL (24-oz) bottles of Diet Coke ... a great deal, especially in a major metropolitan area. Every day on our trip, we either started or ended our day at the Rexall. And we return to Toronto, we'll be back for more!

There was a panhandler sitting in front of this store. I never have change on me, so I never can help that person out. This SDM has two floors. Naturally, I saw stairs and walked up them. I then realized that it has an escalator going up and an elevator. I could have saved some energy. Ugh! The main floor has beauty products, refreshments, the checkout area, and more. I was more interested in getting snack items for a work potluck the following day, which was why I almost immediately headed upstairs. The second floor does have a decent grocery section. You can get fresh produce and drinks. There are frozen foods, including boxed meat, seafood, and pizza. You can also find a good selection of cheese and dairy products. Coffee, tea, cookies, and ice cream are all on this floor. Maybe it was a good thing that I walked upstairs, so I could walk off what I was about to indulge in! I found some nachos that would be perfect for the hummus that I was bringing to this potluck. I grabbed a bag. It took a while for me to leave the second floor. I loved everything from the Squishmallows and vitamins section, to the travel items and pop varieties. I paid for my items downstairs. I ended up doing the self-checkout kiosk. I scanned everything, including my PC Optimum card. I then paid with my debit card. Done! It was nice to visit this SDM. I have only been to two SDM stores with two floors in my life. There are pros and cons, but this one was great. (386)

I got there 15-20 minutes early and I was the first one to get seen for a test. The pharmacist, Katie was super nice and was the only person in the pharmacy when I got there. She got my paperwork and all the supplies ready while I was at the counter, and I was taken in to a small room to get my nasal swab test done. She told me that the results will be ready in 15 minutes so, I walked around and up and down the 2 storeys while I waited. Shelves were neatly organized. They have magazines, a little bit of grocery items including fresh fruit, lotions, creams, makeup and other things you'll typically find at a pharmacy. There are stairs, an elevator, and escalators. I came back to the pharmacy (2nd floor) and there were 5 more people waiting to get their COVID test done 2 of which didn't have an appointment and were demanding to get tested because they do it all the time at this particular location without an appointment. Oh, the entitlement. How hard is it to make an appointment online?! At this time, 2 pharmacists are now behind the counter. The appointments are scheduled in 15-minute intervals. The other pharmacist was explaining to another customer that her flight (to a country that requires test results no more than 24hrs old upon boarding) is not until more than 24 hours so she needs to get her test done the next day but the customer was insisting she needed to get her test done that day. Both pharmacists remained calm and collected even with these difficult people. When all that nonsense cleared out, I got my results and went on my merry way with 6 hours before my flight had to leave.

Another disappointing thing is they close at 10pm. After the renovations, the interior is a lot bigger and spacious and looking more like a traditional Shoppers. The used to be a lot smaller. I think I've calmed down enough since last week to finally write this review…read more I went to the cash out and I had 10 items. After ringing them all through, I watched to see which items would display a sale price -- at Shopper's, the sale prices only appear once the total bill is calculated (so they ring in at full price, and at the end they drop to sale price if on sale). I saw that one of the items didn't go on sale, so I informed the cashier Saada that I didn't want one item. I figured she'd do the simple void, and I could be on my merry way. This is assuming she knew how to void an item. After clicking some random buttons, she said, okay it's done - but I could still see the item listed, and the total bill price hadn't changed. It's still there, I explained, pointing it out to her. It's not there, she told me again, and she was already getting frustrated. 100% sure I was correct (I can add up ten items in my head and could tell it was still in there), I just said, "Ok, let's just see what happens on the final receipt when it comes out," and went to pay -- but at this point Saada decided just to delete ALL the items. "Starting again," she said, and started grabbing items to re-scan them. At this point, a line was forming behind me. Each time she ran in an item, I put it in my reusable bag -- again, we took away that one item I wanted voided, so I just had NINE items -- and then the total was $4 less than last time BECAUSE THAT ITEM WAS MISSING. Upon seeing it wasn't the same total (and still convinced she had voided the other item), Saada reaction was to ACCUSE ME OF STEALING. "Where are you hiding it? Where's the other item? Is it in your hand?" etc etc for about five minutes, grabbing the items out of my bag and counting and recounting....this is the worst customer service I've ever had in my entire life. My decades and decades of life. Time spent in Europe. Times when people didn't even give me service at all. ANY OTHER TIME WAS BETTER THAN THIS. Finally, after this 15 minute-so-far transaction, I just said, NEVER MIND and left the store with nothing. Worst part was I WANTED THOSE NINE ITEMS. The next day I called to speak to a manager. I relayed this story to him. He said, "Okay, I'll talk to her." .... "Have a good day!" and that was it. Never again. This time I mean it!!
