Phantom Regiment is a drum and bugle corp and part of Drum Corps International (DCI). In short, DCI is like a professional marching band, only the participants are usually between the ages of 16-22 and they don't get paid. They do it purely for the competition and experience and the camraderie. DCI is a wonderful combination of athleticism and art. I've been a huge fan since 1988, and growing up in LA, I was excited to be in the Bay Area where two of the top drum corps in the nation were nearby (Concord Blue Devils and the Santa Clara Vanguard). I first got into Phantom Regiment in 1989 when they and the Santa Clara Vanguard were in a heated battle for 1st place. This was the 2nd year SCV was playing "Phantom of the Opera", so it was touted as Phantom vs Phantom. Phantom Regiment most often performs classical arrangements. They've only won the championship once but have come in 2nd and 3rd ten times. They are a fan favorite, akin to the Boston Red Sox (before they won 2 World Series) for coming so close but not quite winning. Some of their more popular performances include Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite", Dvorak's "New World Symphony", Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. They've always had a very elegant uniform look that has been copied by the Bluecoats and Blue Knights. I personally love the all black uniforms. I've watched them the last two years and loved the shows. 2006's was Faust and they had some incredible moments particularly the climax to the largo song in the end. 2007 they had an homage to the older days by closing to a variation to Firebird Suite and performing their famous and inspiring wedge formation with the front edge kneeling.
