I'm pleased to say that Shavan's in Mount Waverley (there's other Shavan's around) isn't one of them. We were greeted at the door and immediately shown to our table, being asked if we would like water or other drinks on the way to our table. We had booked ahead, asking for a high-chair for a baby in our group - this was ready upon arrival. Being a Sri Lankan / Indian restaurant, it was good to see that the food options weren't just your obvious and typical Indian dishes, but did include regional offerings. The range of food options was good, as was the beer and wine selection (they allow BYO wine). Our order came out quickly and was cooked well, and was very tasty. Service was attentive, but unobtrusive. The dishes had a generous content of good quality meat, with a good dose of sauce but not drowned in it and not floating in ghee / oil. We did our usual trick of "I'm hungry + This looks good = Stuffed and waddling out", but it was always going to be that way given what was on offer and how good it was. What little was left over, we took away and will be lunch at work next week!
