Phalanx Crossfit is a awesome gym. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the Sanford Area who enjoys Crossfit, wants to get in better shape, or likes a competitive atmosphere to workout in.
What I like:
1. The staff is super friendly and always willing to help, watch your form, or give advice - they also do so without seeming like they are always telling you that you're doing it wrong. If you don't squat low enough, they will call you out on it. But if you're lifting technique is safe, but a little different than theirs - they won't ride you about it.
2. Price. Let's face it, Crossfit is expensive. The owners give a discount to active duty military, teachers, and a few other professions. If you fit in those categories (A lot of folks in this area do), then Phalanx is much cheaper than some of the boxes closer to the Ft. Bragg.
3. Atmosphere: The place is competitive, but not overdone. No one is going to judge you if you aren't in the best shape of your life. Everyone is there to improve.
4. Close to military base, but not full of military people. If you are in the military, and want to workout at a military friendly box, but while being around regular folks - Phalanx is a great place.
5. Equipment: Phalanx has all the stuff you'll find and most Crossfit gyms. Weights. Pull up bars. Kettlebells, etc etc. The box is pretty clean and well maintained.
What I don't like:
1. Phalanx is in Sanford. So, if you live between Sanford and Ft. Bragg, it's out of the way.
2. A lot of Crossfit gyms aren't open on Sundays. Phalanx is no different.
3. I would like to see a few different types of classes offered. Olympic Lifting and Crossfit fundamentals offered on a regular basis. The staff will certainly help out if you ask for it or if they see unsafe lifting technique. When you first start at Phalanx, you will be taught the fundamentals, so its not as if they have you start lifting without any instruction. An hour fundamentals class before the Hero WODs on Saturday would be a nice addition. read more
