Worst grooming services ever, such a huge waste of time and money! My frenchie was dropped off at 930am and had only had a bath by noon when I came to check on her! I was told it would be only an hour and a half max for the basic service of bath and nail trim. NOTHING got done in that span of time and my dog does not even smell good. They briefly stopped because my dog was very excited and threw up a bit-which is common with the breed. BUT, the groomer, Candence also stated that she stopped to work on another dog...huh?!! Don't bother coming here. i tried 3x now to give it a chance. the grooming department is terrible. the first time they just took hours. I dropped my dog off at 9am and didn't get him back until 3:30pm. The 2nd time, they just completely cut his hair wrong so i chose a different stylist this time and she wasn't even there for my scheduled appointment and i was told she was running behind but never they never showed. DO NOT PURSUE DOG TRAINING HERE. Poor professionalism with no true commitment to dog training or responsible and loving dog ownership. Kathleen Drude removed me from beginning trainer today (2/21/26). 1) She should have talked with me at end of class, not causing disruption during class. 2) A conversation should have taken place with her talking with me NOT at me. Instead, she walked to the register and processed a refund with no conversation with me; she simply exited the training area and ordered me to follow her. 3) Alleged that I am abusive. Untrue. My dog is learning me; I am learning her. We have built trust in only 3 weeks--which is the amount of time that I have had her. I have over 50 years experience with German Shepherds/Rottweilers/mix); this is my 5th rescue. My new dog and I are continuing to work on basic commands. 4) Today's lesson--dog remaining on her mat. Others in class did not have proper mats/bedding. I did. My dog was sitting/laying in her place, waiting for our turn. If concern is the actual wellbeing of the animal, trainer should pay attention to the dog's energy as well as the owner's. Then, the focus should be on give-and-take. For instance, I have commands that I have been using for 50 years. My dog came having been taught different commands. Rather than confuse the dog with Kathleen's words, especially when the dog knows a different word, shouldn't the focus be on the behavior--not the term? Certainly, if owner doesn't have a word, make recommendations. Long and short, I was not unruly or disrespectful to Kathleen Drude, the other owners, or the other dogs. I was there to learn and to continue working with and bonding with my dog. If the trainer's interest was, in fact about the dog and responsible ownership, she would have never removed from the class and certainly would not have done so in such an irresponsible and unprofessional way. read more

If you have a long hair dog don't waste your time setting up a grooming appointment. They're just going to cancel it or tell you that can't do. I've tried to set up three or four grooming appointments here and every time there's an excuse on why they can't cut or bath him. I told them just do what you can to cut or bath him he doesn't need to be perfect and their answer is "sorry we can't do it "so then I have to come pick the dog up after a wasted trip of dropping him off .Specifically with Tori or Jordan. When I initially came in, though, I immediately went to the cash register, and that did not go as pleasant as I thought it would. If you're in the front of the store, your customer service skills should be A1. And it's OK to say "I don't know" and find the nearest associate. read more

I made an online purchase and followed the process for picking up my order in the email I received from the store by going to the designated area for pickup. After searching for someone to help me, I was met by an extremely rude woman whose first words were "next time you have to wait in line". Completely inconsistent with the instructions. The policies change based on the manager who's working. I've had my dog for about 6 months. He was a rescue and when we adopted him he was heart worm positive (but going through treatment). I took him in to get him a bath and nails trimmed and all that and I was honest about all of it. They told me having heart worms is fine so they went about with the appointment and it went great. We had 2 more appointments after that. Today I brought him in for a grooming appointment and they told me they couldn't take him because of the heart worms. I told them they've taken him in the past with no issues so I dont see why they can't this time. They said they just can't. I would've understood if the first time I took him they said they can't. But the fact they've taken him 3 times now and NOW they're telling me no is what pissed me off. Poor management. Just dont bother. read more

We had an appointment for our toy poodle at another location to get her a bath, but the other location refused because our poodle grawled at them, so I called the Pet Smart on Jefferson and talked to Barbie and explained the situation and she told me to bring our fur baby in and she will take care of her and she did just that. Blessing grawled at Barbie and then Barbie began talking to her and rubbing her and within five minutes, Barbie had Blessing calmed down and going with her for a bath and grooming and we have taken Blessing to see Barbie for a haircut also since then and Barbie has been amazing with our Blessing. We have been completely satisfied! I highly recommend Barbie at Pet Smart. read more

Totally not feeling this store. It just was not inviting to the eye when I walked in. The lighting is so dim. It was like a run down grocery store in an ok'd building. 5 stars to the male employee who was our cashier. He was amazing! So nice and we even exchanged laughs. Ok so they do a "puppy package" where I was told by the women on the phone that it means they file the nails, bathe them, and clean up their face and paws mainly. They don't do a full blown cut, just more a clean up to get them use to the clippers. Makes sense to me since she's 4 months old. I guess I assumed that a "clean up" was going to be at-least more than a couple centimeters cut off. I have a mini schnauzer. She came back looking like barely anything was done. $25 wasted. 2 weeks later, my neighbor who's done dog grooming for 15 plus years cuts her for $48 and gives her an ACTUAL hair cut. I guess the lesson here is, sometimes price does make a difference ‍ read more

The Isle of Wight Humane Society does such great work having events at this store but some of the Pet Smart staff are incredibly rude. I was considering adopting a kitty today, but was so put off by one of the Pet Smart team members that I left. Do better Pet Smart - observe your team members. This employee may even have been a manager since she was wearing a head set. In the past, I always chose this store over others in the area, now I won't be back and will contact the IWHS directly - which is sad bc a new kitty requires new supplies, which I would have bought, and continued to buy at this store. I've taken my yorkie puppy here about 4 times, the first 2 visits just for baths, nail, anal glands etc. 4th time was for full grooming, her hair was a little matted on portions of her tummy and legs, so I knew something had to be cut. They wanted to shave her whole body for that, everywhere else her hair was fine. 4th I gave in, and final they shaved her down, but her face wasn't touched? because she kept moving and wouldn't let them do her face! in disbelief I said don't you have grooming tools for that? slings and such? They said, no only vets have that! Me and my crazy looking puppy left! That's when I learned they groom but are not professional groomers! read more

There is a lack of communication and training within the grooming salon. It used to be good but something has changed. They canceled 2 of my appointments at the last minute then told me to just drop him off in the morning and they'd get him cut and give me a discount for all the cancellations. I dropped him off at 7:20. The lady checking me in said she'd go get the groomer and disappeared into the back room for a long time. When she did come back she was at her station doing her own self grooming and ignoring me. I finally asked if she got my groomer and she told me told my appointment was at 7:00. So was she just going to leave me standing there? After telling them I didn't have an actual appointment and they said to "just drop him off in the morning" they got annoyed then they told me they wouldn't cut his hair because they don't have a vet record showing a murmur on file, however this was never a problem the previous two times they groomed him, nor was it ever mentioned when making the appointment. The last two times he was groomed they ask the same questions. Had I known this I would have gotten a vet record. Instead I waited over a month with all the cancellations and have a dog who is miserably shaggy and I can't get him groomed. If you want clear communication and reliability I would not recommend this place. 3 cancellations back to back with groomers who don't know the rules or who don't follow them at the customers expense is ridiculous. read more

Grooming services went fine but check-in was a little chaotic. A large dog got loose when I was dropping my beagle off--so thank God she was socialized. Everyone, including the other pet owners, was calm so it was fine, but I know if anybody had freaked it could have been different. I may try Petco next. read more

Great place to get my fish and aquarium supplies/decor, dog food, and aquatic plants. The staff are very informative, kind, and caring. Usually come here for all my fish instead of Petco because of the 30 day return policy although Petco aquarium decor and tanks are usually cheaper. read more

We usually go for the grooming salon for our 3 rough collies and one black lab mix. They do a real good job for our collies giving them a trim, bath, nail buff and being compassionate all the time. Since I have only shopped the store a couple of times and did not find their prices to be very competitive with the other stores I did not give it a full 5 stars! ****** UPDATE ***** recently we took our dogs in to get groomed 2 at a time at the same time with different groomers so they are done at the same time. This usually worked out GREAT until I found out that our lab was stuck in a kennel for hours unattended because one of the groomers was running behind. This is unacceptable and rude. When I brought my concerns up to the manager she didn't care, did not even apologize once. Sad to say we no longer bring our dogs here. read more

I was coming here for crickets more so than anything else, but have since found a local store for crickets and for my dog's food, primarily based on the reason that I have never spent less than 20-30 mins waiting to get crickets from this store. Sure, maybe a silly thing to complain about to most people, but fellow reptile owners will agree when it's the only thing you regularly need (and many of us need to make a cricket run weekly), it's frustrating as hell to just be standing around for all that time. I don't need to shop, I know what I need, let's get it done. This Newport news va store is unbelievable. I started yesterday for over 15 minutes trying to book on line. Finally I just called and their response was yeah the website has been going down. Well you can't hand write an appointment? That's what was done before computers did everything. Ok so I tried again this morning, website still not working. Called as soon as they opened. The lady said you will have 2 wait 10 minutes because I'm the only one in the store and I have customers. I said well if yall fixed the website I could book on line and I wouldn't have to interrupt you. She quickly shot back, I have nothing to do with that, I didn't even know it was down. Very disappointed after our first visit to the Petsmart grooming salon. Like for any appointment, I was 10 minutes early just in case I had to fill out any paperwork. Upon entering two groomers were attending their dogs but no one greeted us--so after awkwardly standing there, another associate came in greeted us and told us she would be able to check us in but our specific groomer wasn't in yet. She told us that for our 3 month old puppy it would take 3 to 4 hours, completely different than what the online schedule had mentioned (1 hour). Since they needed ample amount of time, we drove home only to receive a call (only 1hr and 20 mins) after dropping our puppy off that he was ready to be picked up. While I will say our puppy smelled great, his nails were poorly clipped--looks like a rushed job, and his ears were NOT touched at all. The "prawgress report" states they were cleaned but that was incorrect. This was our first and last time at petsmart grooming salon. Customer service was awful. read more

After my two Shih Tzus were seeing the same groomer for 8 years I was faced with locating someone new. The first time Maria took her time and spent the entire day with them. The second time I picked my boys up and they had been shaved and I was charged extra for matts, when they barely had hair to grab when I dropped them off! So what matts? Then one of my dogs had a huge spot where they shaved and nicked him horribly. But upon picking him up no mentioned a thing. Needless to say I'm back to the drawing board on locating a good groomer. read more

The store is chaotic. When entering the store, the front area between the doors smells like wet dog and piss. The manager Heather is immature and shouldn't be in charge of anything. The employees, save for a handful, are indifferent, unhelpful, and actually very rude on occasion. I had one cashier actually tell me I feed my cats junk food. How dare he! With Pet Care A Lot and Petco so close by, and Chewy.com shipping for free in 2 days, why would anyone put up with a manager like Heather, rude employees and a crappy shopping experience? Marissa in the grooming department is TERRIBLE. First she schedules my dog's grooming appointment on the wrong date. I had to practically argue with her to take from my dog on the correct date. Then, she charges my miniature schnauzer's grooming for a Standard Size Schnauzer. 6 weeks later, I make an appointment with someone else and Marissa overhears my conversation and starts ARGUING with me on what size MY dog is and mentions to get a ruler out to measure him. Are you kidding me!? No, buddy you're not going near my dog. Marissa has awful customer service skills and I will be sure to NEVER use her or recommend her if I even decide to bring my business back this PetSmart. read more

They canceled on me twice, have no communication, and I found out that none of them are legally qualified for cats! They do a "dry bath" but I also found out that's TERRIBLE for your animal. I took my rescue dog here for grooming her 2nd day out of the shelter. Emma was her groomed and did a phenomenal job with her. I though that she would be scared and a handful, but they said she was really good. I'm sure their temperament and love of dogs is what made her feel so at home. I took my red heeler in for a groom. She is a sweetheart and I have never had any issues with her and past groomers. They couldn't file her nails down, and told me she wasn't all behaved. To top it off, I just noticed she has fleas. In the 8 years she's been alive and with us, she has never had any issues with fleas or ticks. She is primarily an indoor dog and thinks she's human. So, thanks petsmart. What a wonderful Christmas present to bestow upon us. read more

This is the only Petsmart in the area and since I have my dogs on the Wellness plans, I am forced to use the banfield hospital. Just used a Frontline rebate debit card the system glitches during signature and was told to slide it again. Then said incomplete. Manager called she was pretty aloof didn't talk to me at all just started dialing phone numbers. I've spent thousands in this store not to count numerous donations and she thinks I'm trying to rip them off $12. Not even an acknowledgement, apology that it wasn't working, just ignoring me. I've been to other Petsmarts in other states because of the large variety of dog and cat products. And I preferred them, hands down, over Petco, but I only go to this one out of convenience. The employees are somewhat helpful and pleasant and the store is always clean, but I wish they had more of a selection of cat foods. A friend and I came in to find a dry kitten food, they had only a few options for grain free and not many in a large size. Even the sale prices are not really a sale...however the clearance prices are almost always a great deal! read more

Friendly staff for the most part, some you see are more concerned with gossiping with coworker than they are the customers. Clean store great deals and price match is a plus but I don't agree with the animal Care, birds should not be directly on litter, when asking questions about fish they tend to give the wrong advice and the tanks are gross. Also it seems the young lady i bought my bearded dragon from (she really knew what she was talking about with reptiles) is no longer there. I have been going to this location for years. My dog that I have had for 3 years has been going here for grooming since day one. I have never experienced anything like this. So my parents left the house at 12pm. His appointment was at 1230. Takes 12 min to get to petsmart. 1245 I get a call from the grooming place asking me where my dog is. Telling me at 1 they are going to cancel his appointment. So I am freaking out thinking something happened to my parents. 30 min later I here back from my parents confirming that they did drop my dog off at the right location. I called petsmart twice after that and they kept telling me he was not physically there and he was never checked in. So my parents went over there to see what was going on. Almost called the police! Turned out he was in the back kennel the whole time and there was a piece of paper covering up his name and a "flaw" in the system. The groomers also said they were busy. Needless to say after recovering from my panic attack, I will not be returning. read more

We took our pom there to get groomed and we have been for years but this time when I picked her up she started coughing really bad and turns out she got kennel cough. I just wanted people to know to be very careful yes when you get your dog bordtella vaccine it is suppose to protect them but it doesn't cover all the different strains of kennel cough. Someone brought there sick dog in there to infect other dogs or they didn't clean good. Just be careful I will not be taking my dog back there again. read more

Took my sheltie on sunday for their 9am appointment, we had to speak with at least 4 different people while waiting for someone to take our dog to be groomed. I have had my dog groomed by several different establishments and the most time we have had to wait is an hour - hour 1/2 tops. We were told as we were walking out the door it would be 4 to 6 hours! If we didn't already have arrangements for something I would have never left her there. After 3 1/2 hours she was done and we were waiting again, speaking with several people waiting for someone to finally bring our dog out. After we got her you could see dead hair covering her body, wiping it off quickly so we could leave this place we went home to finish inspecting her. We noticed several bald spots, poor trimming, and her hair was not fresh but instead smelled completely of the grooming area. I will never take my dog back there. - Management is working to refund our money, will see how that goes. read more

My dog thinks petsmart is heaven, she walks around there like its her domain and picks out her toys that she wants! However we went in there and about four other customers with their dogs surrounded her to hold and pet her which is obviously not the stores fault but it was kind of obnoxious my poor little one gets scared around other dogs (she is a spoiled lil thing) well we bought a dress a harness ect.. Well the harness was a size to big.. Oopsie I hadn't even left the store yet I was standing right next to the cash register so I asked if I could run back and grab one size smaller but I had to wait for her to finish her conversation with the cash register atendant next to her check out her entire line have another conversation with more employees about their ngihts ect before she finally rerang my order. read more

This store NEVER has enough staff at the checkout counters. The lines are long and the clerks are so slow and chatty that they seem completely oblivious to the long lines of people waiting for assistance. The prices are high AND the selections are few. I can't help but think if it was managed properly some of these issues could be eliminated. The staff is very kind and helpful, but honestly I can feel myself age waiting to check out. Then there are usually two or three staff standing NEAR the single register, yet not opening another one. Very frustrating. I put off coming here until the very last second because it's so S-L-O-W. read more

I am new to the area and have been to several different Petsmarts in other states and have always had a good experience with them. However, on this particular day, that was not the case. I took my two dogs to the grooming section of Petsmart to take advantage of their bath dog package. When I was checking in my dogs, I was not greeted and it took FOREVER for these people to find my appointment on their log. I also noticed that the place smelt funky and was very unkempt. An overwhelming smell of dog feces mixed with peroxide kind of lingered. I understood that it was around the holidays and noticed they were pretty busy so I didn't think much of it. After some time, my dogs were finally checked in. When I went to pick them up, the person who originally checked my dogs in wasn't there so I assumed they already had their shift change. The new lady that was behind the counter was even bitchier than the first! They had already printed the invoices out and had them laid out on the counter and she just kind of had this attitude like I should already know what to do when I come in. At my previous visits at Petsmart (different locations of course) I was always greeted warmly and a review of the charges was done before I went to the cashier and also, I was given feedback on the Pawgress reports on how my dogs behaved. I guess that doesn't happen at the Newport News location! After searching for my invoice in the pile that was on the counter I walked over and paid for the services, when I walked back into the grooming section to pick up my dogs I was shocked to see another lady's dog bleeding all over the front desk area of the office. The dogs nail was cut a little too short and they did a poor job on applying the liquid bandaid over the nail and as a result this poor dog was leaking blood like a geyser all over the linoleum. The workers were assessing the situation but were not considerate of the fact that some people actually consider their dogs as family members and that this sort of thing is not to be tolerated. As a matter of fact, they didn't even apologize to the poor lady and just kind of brushed it off like it was the dogs fault. It was pretty horrifying. I waited another 20 minutes since this ordeal required the entire staff to remedy. When I finally received my dogs I noticed they were easily startled and seemed kind of scared, which I found strange. They love people and they were literally yanking my arm off to leave the place. I was happy to get out of there and I will never take my dogs there again. I recommend you do the same as well. read more
