Everyone in line was just getting food to go, so I joined the queue. I walked in, stood in line, and then made my order; "fish and chips, please". Fish and chips went in the fryer, and I started salivating at the thought of my first bite of authentic British fish and chips. When my order started to come up, I was quite confused. There is no way that much food was for a single order of fish and chips... but I was sadly mistaken. The portions here are absolutely gargantuan. Everything was fresh, piping hot, and delicious. Fishtastic's combined a traditional fish and chip shop (counter, typical menu range) with modern practices - cardboard boxes instead of waxed paper and sustainability info. On the wall is helpful screen showing where their current fish stock was sourced! I ordered Haddock out of habit as I prefer to have my fish cooked to order, but their Cod was sustainable too. The fish was cooked perfectly, chips were kept hot without going soggy (probably down to the box) and a can of Cream Soda washed it all down a treat. I enjoy visiting fish and chip shops when in England because back home in Northern Ireland the standards are generally poor in comparison when dealing with battered products. In NI we are accustomed to thick, heavy batter with a hard outer shell at either end and often a layer of dough underneath. In England, I can be fairly confident about getting very light batter which is neither hard nor undercooked.
