I hate writing negative reviews, but our experience with Your Boat Shop was so serious and costly…read morethat I feel obligated to share it. We brought them a well maintained boat with no known transmission or drivetrain issues. They replaced our engine mounts but did not perform the alignment in the water afterward. Less than 20 operating hours later, our port transmission failed while we were underway in the middle of Puget Sound with our 3-year-old and newborn baby onboard. What followed was more than $25,000 in damage, repairs, towing, haul-out, inspections, and expert review. Multiple surveyors and marine professionals have since confirmed our findings: the failure was tied to misalignment after the engine mount work. This did not just cost us money. It took away over a year of boating with our family. We tried repeatedly to work with Your Boat Shop and hoped Dirk would take accountability, or at minimum engage in understanding what happened. Instead, Dirk declined to participate in the investigation and ignored our calls. The burden of investigating and repairing the damage fell entirely on us. This was also not an isolated concern. We had referred friends to Your Boat Shop, and their boat was also damaged after work performed there. They ultimately had to have the work corrected by CSR Marine, over $10,000 in damages. Mistakes can happen. What matters is how a business responds when they do. In our case, the response was deeply disappointing. I strongly urge other boat owners not to be fooled by the great reviews or attractive pricing. Based on our experience, I would not recommend Your Boat Shop for engine mount, alignment, shaft, transmission, or other drivetrain-related work. The risk and cost are far too high.

I hired Your Boat Shop to replace the engine mounts on my motor vessel. Less than 20 operating…read morehours later, my port transmission (w/ 1,000 hours) failed while underway, ultimately resulting in more than $25,000 in repairs. What makes this especially concerning is that before the engine mount replacement, a pre-purchase survey and gearbox oil analysis found no evidence of transmission distress, abnormal wear metals, drivetrain vibration, or shaft-related issues. The transmission failure occurred only after Your Boat Shop performed the mount replacement. Following the failure, Harbor Marine, a ZF-authorized service facility, documented approximately 0.010" of coupling misalignment and found the port shaft seized in the cutlass bearing. An independent SAMS-accredited marine surveyor later documented extensive internal transmission damage and concluded that the transmission-to-shaft coupling was grossly out of alignment following the engine mount replacement (SAMS report attached). The surveyor's opinion was that the failure sequence was precipitated by shaft misalignment after the recent mount replacement. What concerns me most is that this was not the only alignment issue associated with this shop. During my claim investigation, I reviewed documentation from CSR Marine involving another vessel serviced by Your Boat Shop. CSR found significant engine misalignment and concluded that the shafts appeared to have been reinstalled without properly aligning the engines, requiring substantial corrective work--over $10,000. CSR images and cost to repair attached. Equally disappointing was the response after the failure. Your Boat Shop was notified and given the opportunity to participate in determining the root cause but declined to become involved. The burden of investigating the failure fell entirely on me. Although my insurance carrier could not cover the loss because the work predated my policy, they still paid for towing, haul-out, and independent expert inspections needed to determine what happened. A routine engine mount replacement was followed by documented shaft misalignment, a seized cutlass bearing, catastrophic transmission damage, and more than $25,000 in repair costs. Based on my experience, the independent findings, and the shop's unwillingness to participate in the investigation, I have no confidence in the workmanship or accountability demonstrated by Your Boat Shop or Chris Tomlinson Marine Services and would not trust either company with any work on my vessel.

Finding a good mobile mechanic that will work on stern drives is difficult in this area. Most of…read morethe greats are retired as this technology is getting long in the tooth. I was very pleased to find Lakeside Boat would visit my marina and work on my motor. The scheduling was hard to get done though - I was ready to find another mechanic before we started. Once the work was on the schedule, I felt good - going to get some maintenance (tune up/oil change) and have my manifolds replaced as they were getting on 5 years (routine to change them on that interval). Josh sent me a bill for parts estimated - and I know that that will vary to some degree once the work starts. Paid it right away because I wanted to get the boat in tip top again. During the day of the service, I got a call - a part was not anticipated, and it would add $900 to the bill. Ok. At that point, I'm kind of committed so I said OK. I didn't realize I was going to pay shop labor rate for Josh to drive to Kent to pick up those parts and then drive them to Edmonds. That added $1000 to the bill for delivery and then Josh waiting around. At the end of the day, I got the call that the boat was done - and because it would not start (it had been running for me reliably until then) another part was needed. Again, at that point I'm committed. Got the final bill via the online portal - and paid it right away even though I was at that point in total sticker shock. The total price came in over $5,000. I had questions. I finally got Josh on the phone - he's disappointed, I'm disappointed - because I've had mobile work done on my boat for years and years - and never had this feeling that I got fleeced. After the phone call... I still feel like I got fleeced. I inspected the work - it looks solid. They have a good mechanic. I question the business ethic however. Still waiting for an itemized bill.

I held off on writing this review as I was waiting to see how management was going to handle damage…read morethat was done to my boat while in their care over the winter. Unfortunately, they didn't think they were responsible for the damage so with that, I couldn't discourage using Lakeside enough. I dropped my boat off for winter storage and picked my boat up approximately 6 months later in the spring. When I picked up, I wasn't able to hook up the trailer because of damage to the trailer tongue coupler. After giving the boat a thorough check, it was noted that a hole was punched through on the forward end of the outboard engine cowling and there was damage to the back end of the boat. After lifting up the seats to access the underseat storage (pontoon boat with bench seating), every compartment was soaked and had standing water. The operations manager claimed it was because I dropped it off in November. Even though I paid over $3K for indoor winter storage, they blamed it on me for the time of year I dropped off the boat. I eventually found out that the boat was transported in the winter months with no cover on from Kent to Lake Stevens and then later from Lake Stevens to Fisherman's terminal area (about 90 miles in total) to their new shop. When pressed about who did the transportation, I was told, "by friends paying them in pizza and beer". Upon getting the boat in the water, I discovered that the starboard speakers on the boat were not working. Once again, none of these issues existed prior to or on the day of dropping off the boat to them. Lakeside was unwilling to take any responsibility for these issues so hopefully trying to save anyone else a headache by using them for future boat storage.
