The place is friendly to all ages and they are very knowledgeable about pets. They provide with resources and guides for the care of your pets. Prices are reasonable compared to other places. When my 16 1/2 year old Maltese-Shitzu, Bobby, was in his last days he claimed one of our other pups, Dallas, comfy beds for himself. I think Dallas knew that his buddy needed a little more comfort and never complained once. After Bobby sadly passed I went to Petland to purchase Dallas a new comfy bed to reward him for being so patient and kind to his brother. Me and my sister went here to get our pet bunnies nails clipped, the first thing the employee did was put him on top of the counter and almost drop him. while cutting his nails they put the poor guy on his back which is something you cannot do with small animals. it may have seemed like they did not know what they were doing and they might have clipped the bunnies nails to short and cause pain. During the car ride back he was stressed out to the max and was chattering his teeth which is not good. Terrible experience, could've been prevented, not happy. read more

I love this place! Brought my grandchildren here for years when they were younger. Finally broke down and bought two bunnies. They are the best pets. I was sold a wild caught jumping spider. This status was never disclosed. He died a week after getting him. I called to speak to the manager and she was literally so cruel and callous I can't even put words to it. She showed zero compassion and blamed me for the entire situation. This place is awful and should be ashamed to call its self a pet store and the owner is a psycho. I just recently bout an axolotl from here and about 6 days later of having him in his new home I noticed some kind of worm looking thing sticking out of his eye and gills. So I did some research on google and found out that my axolotl had anchor worms which is a type of parasite. So I called the store where I got him to see if they can give me any info on how to treat it and I was met with a very rude person on the phone which turned out to be the owner of the store she kept saying in a very condescending way in all her years of working she never seen an axolotl get anchor worms. So I thought maybe I was wrong then the very next day I took pictures of it and went to a pet co and asked multiple what they think it was and they all said that it was 100% anchor worm. So then after I got confirmation on what it was I went to Petland to let them know and I saw that their tank was fully infected with anchor worms all of the axolotls and the fish inside had it so I then let them know if the problem and they told me to bring him back and they'll give me my money back and I did but when I got home to get the axolotl I checked my other fish I had in there with my axolotl ( I do know the axolotl will eat guppies and other fish but he was too small to eat any at this point) and everything had been infected with parasites. So I drove back to the store and told them in a very polite way "I don't want it to seem like I'm asking for more money but my whole fish tank got infected is there anyway you can give me a free bottle to help take care of it" and the medicine to take care of the parasites are about $12 so the manager went to go ask terry the owner of the store if they could do that. So the owner proceeds to approach me very rude and ask me what do I want and I just said would it be possible if I can get a medicine to clear up the parasites in my tank and she got very angry and proceeded to argue with me in the middle of the store telling me my fish aren't worth the price of the medication and "why don't you bring your fish to me and I'll flush them down the toilet for you" yes in those exact words so we ended up around for about 20 minutes then I just left the store very frustrated that she would say that as an owner of a pet store and seems she doesn't care for the pets she has and just telling me that maybe I was the cause of the anchor worms when you can clearly see all the axolotls in the tank at the store had them. So I went to pet stores to try and get some medication which I did find that was $5 and I started a conversation with a customer telling him all about what happened then he proceeded to tell me he used to work there at pet land and told me the words he would use to describe the owner which were "psycho" " lunatic" "crazy" and even told me a story of how he saw her throw a hedgehog like a football into the trash can!! And he had also told me that she abuses the animals she has. So with that being said I would not recommend pet land at all the owner is a psycho and will do anything to make money even sell sick animals? read more

The employees at Petland were wonderful BUT we had an interaction with the owner that was not pleasant. We were purchasing a hedgehog + setup which amounted to a cost of more than $500.00. When we asked if there were any bundle discounts available the owner responded with a disgusted look and responded very loudly that there were no discounts and Petland was "competitively priced". A quick look on Amazon revealed otherwise. We left feeling alienated and will not be spending any more money in this establishment. An additional remark here: when we bought our tank from here (for the hedgehog) it was not marked and not very presentable (looked to be a floor model). The price was a best guess from the owner and, as we later found out, was significantly overpriced from similar products. Lastly, the wheel we purchased was "new" but had rat poop inside. read more

Not sure why there are any bad reviews about the staff, we had a wonderful experience. Specifically one worker a lady, with glasses, strait hair and a bubbly personality(I didn't catch her name) she was awesome! We went to just look around and play with some critters as we are from California, I've personally owned a lot of exotic pets in the past so I was excited to see sweet little fur balls again. She was extremely helpful and fun, she opened up cages for me to pet the critters that were caged(like the hairless hamster!!), she stood and chatted with us for a long while about each critter as well. The staff was all pleasant toward my child as well, there was another lady with a pony tail and a man and both were just as kind and friendly toward my family. I highly highly recommend this pet store. The animals all looked healthy and happy and the staff seemed to truly enjoy their jobs. read more

Great selection of pets and pet products. Staff is fairly knowledgeable about the animals they carry. What I really liked about this pet store was their variety of exotic pets that chain retailers like Petco and Petsmart do not carry. Petland offers exotic birds such as Macaws, Eclectus Parrots, Senegal's, Cockatoos, cockatiels, conures, and I've even seen finches and budgies! Most of the birds are hand tamed and ready to be held by their new new owners. You don't find many pet stores with these selection and kinds of birds here in the Albuquerque metro area. The fact they hand tame them at birth just makes it more worth the while but of course it doesn't come cheap! The exotics are not unaffordable but they are pricey so keep that in mind. They offer specials and sometimes discounts at different times of the year. They have a large selection of bird toys, treats, cages, and stands. If your a bird person this is a great place to find stuff for them. They offer exotic reptiles such as chameleon, and various lizards. They have a wonderful selection of fish and aquatic supplies. They have rabbits and I've even seen sugar gliders there at one point. As far as dogs and cats I've never personally seen them carry any. Unless they are in the back or something I'm not quite familiar but they do offer a lot of dog and cat supplies that's I've seen there. The staff is very friendly and happy to answer any questions you have. When you purchase a pet from them they make sure you have everything you'll need to get your new friend ready to come home with you. I have a couple birds one of which I actually purchased from them and what I liked about this place is they have a rewards program where after 5 or 6 bird food purchases you get the next one free. If I could give a half star, I would. They have decent supplies, but let me tell you about the bird I purchased for 250 dollars. I purchased a parrotlet in January. I should have known by the way the owner/woman grabbed him, or tried to grab him, out of the cage. I brought home my bird, knowing that it would take a few weeks or a few months to let him acclimate to his new home. I was told he was hand fed and socialized. I was a fool to believe her. It was clear she just wanted to make a sale. I was told that he was put in another cage with a female parrotlet and subsequently they bonded. Well these geniuses then went ahead and separated them after some amount of time and after they were bonded. I took the bird home and I've had birds before so I knew to proceed slowly. However, slowly doesn't begin to explain what is going on. The bird has been traumatized. And I mean traumatized. He is just now after four or five months beginning to settle in just a little bit. He is terrified of me and that made me wonder about what the owner had told me that he was hand fed and socialized. So I went back to the pet store and talked to the owner and I told her what was going on. To her credit, she did seem a little compassionate -- or guilty-- I'm not sure which.She told me that they had not socialized the parrotlet and that in fact they had pretty much ignored him for some months that he was in the pet shop. She said they had other larger birds that were demanding their attention. So basically I got a very very intelligent species of bird who was ignored, allow to bond with another bird and then ripped from her. To say the least, I would say that the owner of Petland is guilty of negligence and mental and emotional neglect of this animal. Birds need to be socialized. It is irresponsible as an owner of a pet shop to purchase birds for sale, and then let them become untame or wild and then sell them. Please, do yourself a HUGE FAVOR AND DO YOUR RESEARCH before buying a bird from this or any pet shop. I went out and purchased a cockatiel direct from a small breeder in AZ. He's friendly and tame and was hand fed and well cared for. It's the ONLY way I will ever purchase another bird. read more

Great staff, knowledgeable of ball pythons. I am a new owner and came in to get his gender determined and to learn how to take care of him. Ashlyn answered all my questions, and I brought him back in again when he was shedding for the first time because I had even more questions. 3 stars for the fact that I actually like this store, upon walking in it is very enjoyable. But I went in for my second time today (came in last week too check it out since I was planning on it being my main source for feeders) I got 12 dozen crickets, 2 pinkies and 1 mouse. I normally go to clarks, but tried here because it is much closer. Upon getting home to feed my 10 different species of reptiles I notice the crickets look quite shorted. I counted them all one by one and found there was only a total of 66. 66 crickets only feeds about half my animals. I wouldn't be that angry had I paid for 66 crickets rather than 12 dozen considering they are 14 cents a piece, which I don't mind paying more since the store is much closer. I think I'll continue to make the trek to Clarks, they have always given me the amount I ask for and charge me correctly for the amount given. read more

This place used to be our family's go to for all of our pets needs. Close to our North Abq Acres home with a decent selection, but then things began to change. Over the past few months costumer service seems to be lacking. We had gone in to buy a new aquarium set up, but after 30 minutes of being ignored while the staff talked to themselves we left and purchased at another store. Shortly after we went back to buy fish, and again I had to seek help with in the store. My most recent visit we walked into an empty shop. I had to poke my head in the back to find someone to check us out. Thos can't be good for the animals. We bought this Syrian hamster about 5 months ago and named her Ginger Aka Gingy. She is the sweetest thing and has been one of our favorite pets so far. She is very good with all of our kids and has been nothing but sweet, we just love her so much! I purchased a Canine Clean chew toy for my 7 month old Goldendoodle. I purchased on Wednesday and my dog chewed on it Thursday night. We were sitting in the room with her (yes, she was being "supervised") and with in 5 minutes we began hearing cracking. I picked up the toy and my dog was cracking some of the pieces off. Attempted to return toy because a dog chewy toy should not break that easily. Went to register 3 employees standing there the first said @well it's just plastic!" I said exactly and you think it's okay for my dog to ingest plastic ? She walked away, the next clerk had another "genius" comment like the first girl then she walked away three managers later. I get from Teri, older blonde lady, whose one of the managers. She tells me "well did you supervise your fog it's says right here on the package to supervise" obviously my answer was "yes" she said well we don't return dog toys this us just supposed to be chewed on for a few minutes. She went on to say Petsmart doesn't return toys either. She also essential called me a liar she said I'm sure your dog tears up all her toys. I said no this is the first toy she's broke and she has all kinds of toys chew toys, plush toys, stuffed type toys, ropes etc and she she was basically like I doubt that she does not tear up her other toys. I was very upset said I would right a bad review and she was like go ahead. I then called Petsmart acted like I bought the product there and the manager said "sure no problem bring it back in and we'll refund your money that shouldn't happen" she said even if you don't have your receipt with your rewards number we can look it up. I did then tell her that I did not purchase it there and I told her the story about Petland. She again said that should not happen with a dog chewy toy. I obviously DID NOT return it to Petsmart. I am going to try contacting the company for a refund. I would not recommend Petland because they have poor customer service and obviously don't care about your dog "I mean it is just plastic" right it's fine for dogs to swallow plastic ??? When I tried to call back a let Teri know that Petsmart does return "defective" dog toys - she wouldn't take my call. That's "real" quality customer service at its finest . P.S. first night I went in they gave my dog a treat I said that doesn't have peanut butter does it store clerk said no - after he gave my dog the treat he read the package more closely and said oh it has PB is she allergic to PB I said no but my son has severe Peanut allergies and if she licks him he could have a reaction. The store associate said oh sorry and ran away from me..... So you make your own decision about their customer service. Petsmart is 2 miles down the road and Petco sells a lot of the same products as Petland and they are at Academy and San Mateo. read more

I didn't want to post a bad review. Prior to my most recent experience, I didn't really have much to say about these guys, bad or good. I somewhat recently got a hedgehog from these guys that absolutely had to have been sick before we got him. He died from what appeared to be a respiratory infection. Didn't get a necropsy because I was a little too upset over losing him so soon. It happened way too fast. The same day I got him, I saw three ferrets who were clearly sick. I mentioned it to two girls who worked there and they said "sometimes they come in sick, but they're well enough to go home." They were all lethargic and wheezed when breathing. When you picked them up, they were limp and had uneven breaths. It reminded me that on a previous visit to look for a toy for my dog, that my fiance and I noticed a bunny that we suspected had a respiratory infection. My fiance works in another pet store and is familiar with some symptoms. They tried to tell us that they sometimes just get a little off from transit. It didn't sit right with us because the bunny's eyes were crusty and it also had some bumpy, wheezy breaths. All these pets should be in isolation until symptoms get better, not on the sales floor. Needless to say, these particular experiences have turned me off of Petland probably for good. read more

There's a distinct animal smell when you walk in the door but that can't be helped as they had ferrets and guinea pigs. Small selection of fish, very cichlid heavy, a few regulars like guppies and such and a few salt water fish. The kid taking care of them looked totally blasted, really gone. An older woman was very rude and said I couldn't see the birds unless I held my dog. My dog..was not barking or acting aggressive. She acted very put out when I changed my bird choice one time. The owner is rude and not understanding at all. I was returning a fish that died overnight while I was sleeping and she said "I usually don't take back beaten up fish"(which on the receipt says 7 day guaranteed. It says nothing about "won't take back beaten up fish") Assuming the fish died beaten up without even considering the other fish in the tank weren't eating him when he was dead. I asked if I get get this particular fish and she goes "no I won't let these fish go home with you" and she also said she won't give me cash back cause that's 40 dollars out of her pocket which makes ZERO sense because that's also 40 dollars out of my pocket! Also the staff is very very very unwelcoming making anyone who walks in feel like a burden the only very nice and "welcoming" staff member is josh he is the only one who walks up to someone when they are looking at the fish and asks them if they're ready or what they're looking for. We visit Petland monthly to buy dog food, harnesses(they have a great selection), and our favorite dog treats manufactured in the US. We've also bought fish from them and gotten random supplies for my various classroom pets. The staff has always been knowledgeable and very helpful. Be advised they do get busy, and sometimes you have to wait a few for help. They have open animal habitats where people can handle the various animals and they also are very popular for their animal events with the kiddos. We live on the other side of town but make the drive because of their service and they always have what we need. read more

I purchased my betta at this location several months ago. He's a phenomenal fish. The reason for three stars, is that they have a poor selection of filters for fish tanks, and one employee gave me terrible advice about caring for fish. I wish they wouldn't stress so much that if your pet dies within a certain amount of time you can get your money back. It's pretty cold and takes some of the fun out of a new little friend.
