(Review actually from 18 Sept. 2011, copying over from elsewhere.)…read more This places makes me happy and restores my faith in people. I've read that the Polish pride themselves on being excellent hosts, and Pod Czarną Różą demonstrates that well. This is a hotel with a bed and breakfast feel and a prime location. It's near the clubs, which aren't my thing any more, but it's also near the water, near the leaning tower, near cafes, near the square, near NCU... This isn't a technical five-star hotel. It doesn't satisfy some list of check boxes. It's not cookie cutter. There's character. You'll trip on the ledge at your room's door. You might worry a bit on the tight stairs. The floor creaks as an older building should. The shower's European, so beware of cracking your elbows. All this, and they have a real iron you can use. Seriously, silly "business" hotels, why can't you get this right? The staff went above and beyond. I needed to check out at 5am, and they not only accomodated me but also volunteered to help with my missed breakfast. One lady provided an excellent suggestion for dinner, Oberza two doors down. They always welcomed me with smiles, even with my sad attempts at phrasebook Polish. Perhaps I'd feel differently if I were lodged in the newer building, but my stay in the older one was utterly delightful. And extremely inexpensive. Oh, and there is a jar of Nutella on every breakfast table.

This was the only hotel available for us that was pet-friendly and it advertised being 20 minutes…read moreaway from the main attractions so we expected to have to use Lime/Bolt scooters to get around. That was not the case. This location is about a 5-10minute walk to EVERYTHING. It has private gated parking (25zł a night) behind the hotel so its well secure, a security staff member on-site as well, and is very clean! We were pleasantly surprised. My only issue was rhat the beds were european style (VERY FIRM) so I could not sleep on them. Howver, I did enjoy the ikea pull-out couch which was super comfortable. Bring your humidifier though because the lack of air circulation and dryness just sucks the moisture right out of you in October. It is literally a 2 block walk away from the Castle walls and ruins. Its about 4 blocks away from the "Main" square but there are two squares in town. The one square is around the corner from the hotel front and has Sunday markets! I love that this hotel is pet friendly but it has a lot of fees attached so thats another reason for the lack of stars. Pay for parking inside or the machine will try to make you pay for a non-hotel guest rate. Also, the shower is small and the location of the toilet paper holder is bad. I kept hitting my elbow on it, causing the toilet paper to fall off and roll behind the toilet. The room itself is spacious so they could have made more room in the bathroom for a walk-in shower. Otherwise, we will stay here again if our friends want to come back. No issues with our two dogs.
