Touch of Velvet Bakery - A very dense, dry and gummy slice of coconut cake

Inconspicuously tucked away in a corner of a small Plaza, I almost didn't see it ar first. As I finally arrived and entered, the little bakery gave off vibes of being a Metropolitan convenience store where you stand in a small enclosed area and everything is behind a glass to protect the clerks from nefarious activity. Very odd, but I'm here for the cakes, so let's move on. As I feverishly looked to see what cakes were offered... I chose Italian cream cake, and red velvet. Two of my favorites and classics with cream cheese icing. The hunks of cake were of huge proportion and had a good heft to where it felt like you were getting your monies worth. I rushed home to enjoy them in my own space. The first bite was of course, Italian... hmmm. That didn't go well. I took another... the cake had a proper flavor, but exhibited a dense soemwhat gummy but dry texture. I also caught a hint of egg yolk on my tongue, a taste I'm all to familiar with when my grandma admittedly fouled one of her recipes in a rush. Moved on to the red velvet, again the same dense slightly gummy but dry texture. No hint of egg this time, but I decided to put it into the microwave for 10 seconds. Maybe a slight touch of heat would revive the freshness just long enough to make it palatable. Unfortunately, it only helped slightly. I like warm cake, but I know what I know... this isnt a mishap, this is their signature and to be honest, I've had box cakes that was much more inviting than this. Unfortunately.. I have no desire for a second try.

From the moment you walk in, the vibe is warm, colorful, and welcoming--think beachy charm with a touch of artsy personality. The staff are genuinely friendly and attentive without being overbearing, which sets the tone for a relaxed, enjoyable meal. The food is where this place really shines. Breakfast and brunch are standouts, with creative twists on classics. The French toast is thick, fluffy, and perfectly sweet, while the omelets are loaded with fresh ingredients and cooked just right. Their baked goods--especially the muffins and pastries--taste homemade in the best possible way. If you stop by for lunch, the sandwiches and wraps are equally impressive, packed with flavor and generously portioned. Coffee lovers won't be disappointed either--their brews are rich and smooth, pairing perfectly with the menu. Everything feels thoughtfully prepared, not rushed or mass-produced. What really elevates Andy's Flour Power is the consistency. Whether you're a first-timer or a regular, you can count on great food, a laid-back atmosphere, and service that makes you feel like part of the community. If you're anywhere near Panama City Beach, this is absolutely worth a stop--especially for a slow, satisfying breakfast that sets the tone for the rest of your day.

Unfortunately, this was a really disappointing experience. We came with a party of 12 for brunch,…read moreso we expected it to take a little longer, but it still took about 50 minutes for our food to come out, and we ended up being there for nearly two hours. The food was very hit or miss. My grilled cheese looked like it had been smashed in a panini press, but the cheese wasn't even melted, and the bacon didn't add much. The fries were honestly the best thing on my plate. The chicken salad sandwich was incredibly dry--more like a brick of chicken salad between two slices of bread than an actual sandwich. The grits were by far the worst part of the meal. They were watery, the grains tasted undercooked, and the texture was just awful. My mimosa was basically orange juice with little to no champagne, and using pulpy orange juice made it even less enjoyable. To be fair, not everything was bad. My mom said her eggs Benedict were some of the best she's had, and my sister's BLT was okay, not terrible, but definitely nothing special. Overall, aside from the fries and the eggs Benedict, the food was disappointing, especially considering the wait. We left wishing we'd gone somewhere else.

As the restaurant became successful and expanded with a second location in Pensacola, it feels like the focus shifted away from the quality that once made the 30A location unique. The result is cuisine and execution that seem designed more for tourists than for diners looking for an exceptional meal. The one bright spot was our waiter, who was professional, attentive, and provided excellent service. Unfortunately, the food was deeply disappointing. The restaurant's signature salmon dish was virtually inedible and bore little resemblance to the outstanding version I had enjoyed in the past. The lamb chops tasted as though they had been pre-cooked, reheated, and carelessly finished, lacking the quality and preparation you would expect from a restaurant at this price point. Even the "French baguette and butter" seemed like a thawed grocery store product rather than something worthy of a fine dining establishment. Renaissance once distinguished itself from the tourist traps that 30A is infamously known for. Sadly, it now feels like just another one of them.
