Pete's Pizza I -Town Pete's needs more phone lines. This place is insanely busy and the reason is because they are slinging delicious pies. It's that college pizza place vibe. The staff was friendly. The kitchen was busy, but everyone had a job and were working seamlessly. We got the supreme, which is Canadian Bacon, Pepperoni, Sausage, Green Peppers, and Onion hold the shrooms, to go. The pizza is phenomenal. Plenty of toppings with a fabulous thin crust. Definitely adding this place to my pizza rotation if in the area. One of my aunts from Misery (Oops. I mean Missouri) was staying with my cousin down in Indianola for a few days. After an unsuccessful attempt to schedule a lunch in the metro I was invited down for pizza at their house. I'd asked if they had had Pete's. I'd heard good things. Their reputation and a solid response to their food had drifted all the way up here... Her response. "We love Pete's!" So Pete's it was. I looked at their the menu online and told them I wasn't picky Order what they wanted. I trusted them. They ordered the Jontie and a Supreme (add cream cheese and a half with jalapenos) along with appetizers of the cheese bread and potato skins The menu describes the Jontie toppings as garlic oil, Canadian bacon, mushroom, green pepper, onion, topped with lettuce and creamy Italian dressing. The Supreme is decribed as Canadian bacon, pepperoni, sausage, mushroom, green pepper and onion. And like I said above they customized this for us with cream cheese and a half with jalapenos. Jack and Jill (yes...that's really their names) picked up the pizza and a couple of six packs on the way home. Big Grove Sherman Hill Champagne Light Lager and an Exile. Zoltan Island I think... Both great Iowa companies in their own right! Since I didn't step foot in the restaurant I can't really speak too much about that. If you search Pete's Pizza Indianola you will find pictures and additional reviews on Yelp, Facebook, and Google. From the pictures it looks pretty old school (classic) with a bar and the seating appears to be mostly low top tables and chairs. Jack and Jill were telling me it's a true mom and pop shop. A husband and wife run the place with a small team of staff. I didn't take pictures... The kiddos decimated it pretty quick! Hey... The kids get served first. That's how it always was when I was growing up and it's nice to see it continue. The five year old accidentally got into the half with the jalapeños... That was kind of funny to me. Not to him though... Lol The pizza crust is thin, but it's not cracker thin... Definitely thinner than a hand tossed crust... The toppings were fresh and I liked the red sauce on the Supreme...nice and tangy. And I have to admit it's the first time I've had lettuce on a pizza outside of taco pizza anyway... The lettuce and other vegetables tied in with the creamy ranch dressing...while unconventional...was suprisingly good. If I find myself in Indianola and I'm looking for something to eat... Pete's will probably be at the top of my list. I'd like to get the in restaurant feel for the place. Good pizza. Good beer. And good company... We ordered The DJ, which is essentially a crab rangoon pizza, but with pepperoni instead of crab. It was fantastic. Great crust and quality toppings! We also ordered a couple of side salads, they were awesome, and gigantic. One side salad is a meal or plenty for 2 people. The salad is pretty much a spot on clone of the old Orlondos Salad, if you miss that salad go to Pete's, if you have no clue what I'm talking about, still go to Pete's, and try the salad, you'll love it. What a fun funky place! It's a bit of a small town dive-bar vibe, but it's clean and inviting, although a bit cramped. They also have a fun arcade in the entry for the kids. We were there and thankfully got in before the rush . The DJ PIZZAI was great and there was a couple who had waited and. Hour but we got there and our group of 6 got seated. Still great service and pizza. Highly recommend this place? But stay away because I would love to be able to get a table. read more

Our family had some wonderful pizza recently, very good selection of pies! i had a pizza with pepperoni and cream cheese which was just totally flavorful. Pizza!!!! Small town. Family owned. The owner is there working to serve you. We snagged a seat in the back and was served right away. Our waitress, who also managed and owned the place was very sweet and quick. The size salad was amazing. Simply ice burg lettuce smothered in mozzarella cheese. Took a tip from a local and opened up a napkin and put it underneath the bowl. It did end up everywhere. Lol The Rogella pizza was delicious. Came out tongue burning hot! It was a pizza with cream cheese! This was fabulous. We beat the crowd as people started pouring in as we were getting ready to leave. What a great little place for the price and pizza. What a small town gem. My friend said her mom had worked there on the 70s. She had a picture on her phone and the place hasn't changed a bit. That's great to see. read more

We were visiting from Kansas City and had already decided before arriving in town that Pete's Pizza would be where we'd eat. The place was pretty much packed, unlike the other places we visited while in Indianola on this Saturday in July. The pizza is cracker thin crust and thick with cheese, smothering the toppings. The sauce is rich and sweet. It was a great pizza, one of the best we've found on our years of this trips. I definitely recommend it! The space itself is divided in three sections. In the front is a game room with a pool table, Pop-a-Shot, and video games. In the middle is a narrow bar area, which we sat at the edge of. The far back is the dining area, which is where all the families were. Indianola is lucky to have two pizza joints on the square: Pete's and Winns. For dinner I visited Pete's with a couple of friends. We split a large pizza (plenty for three people), and indulged in a pitcher of beer ($8.50). The vegetable pizza was cooked to perfection and finger-licking good; the crust was perfect. Frosted mugs were served with the pitcher of beer, very old school. My one large complaint about Pete's is the acoustics and resulting noise. When it's busy, it's tough to carry on a conversation without speaking loudly. The space is small and confined, and while normally I would call this cozy, it's a hindrance having to speak so loudly to be heard. Other than the noise, the ambiance is cool, comfy and sporty. And nobody can say that the games up front aren't cool. What better way to top off a dinner of pizza and beer than with some basketball? Don't let the exterior fool you! This place, though a bit dive-y, is clean, the service is great, and a lot of love goes into their pizza. Definitely worth a try for a casual dinner out. Come hungry. read more

Having lived in and near Des Moines for almost 20+ years has allowed me to make some firm conclusions about some things in central Iowa (but only for me, myself, and I). I am originally from near Chicago so when I return back home I often get asked to describe my favorite restaurants - if Iowa, "even has any." So with great ease, when asked about my favorite gyro place, I begin to describe what Des Moines locals may know as "Ted's Coney Island." When asked about my favorite delicatessen, I give details about central Iowans may know as "Manhatten Deli." These are restaurants I know would impress fellow Illinoisans. But when I am asked to describe my favorite pizza joint, no one will wait for the answer because where I come from - no pizza can compare to that of the legendary Lou's LaGrotto pizzeria.To begin talking about any pizza place as though it could compare or compete with Lou's could be seen as an insult back home. Until. Tonight. For months, my close friend kept mentioning this pizza place to try. "You haven't had pizza until you had Pete's Pizza." I put a lot of stock in my friend's opinion. So with time to kill before watching a movie at the Indianola theater, I called my order in. I heard this place was always busy, so I wanted to be prepared and not rushed. The person who answered the phone was very pleasant and beyond excited that I was new to try this pizza place out. She encouraged me to try the homemade sausage they make. So I did. I also added to the combination - pepperoni, mushrooms, and onion. And got a side salad to go. She never asked me what type of crust I wanted - thank God. Somehow after I gave her my order, I felt I may have failed myself in the crust department by not mentioning what crust I prefer. Coming from Chicago, you eat big - so deep dish, a lifetime of cheese on top - so much so, they hand you a steak knife so you can carve your way through the mozzarella maze until you hit crust. When I arrived - at the exact time this pizzeria told me to, I met Sammy who said, "If you are Steve, then this might be a match made in heaven." Once I confirmed who I was - like I'd admit I was anyone else at this point - she told me pizza JUST came out of the oven and sliced up my Italian circle of heaven and placed her in a box. She gathered up my to-go items but I looked around me and always wanted to be in a real-life version of "Cheer's" [television show series - for all you youngsters] and bask in the golden ambience of this pace where I knew no one's names but felt like I was among friends. The first bite I had of my pizza reminded me of the first time I stood in the ocean - and got knocked on my back. Actually, every bite felt the same going forward. The ingredients of this pizza were fresh, but by my fifth slice I realized it was the wonderful texture and authentic taste of the crust that mesmorized me. The waitress who made sure my whole visit was amazing also shared some history of the place. This place started in 1974 - and the passion this place is throwing into their food ensures it will be around in 2074. All in all, when people ask me about the best pizza place in Iowa... it's hands down Pete's Pizza. And I've looked for a long time. The greatest ingredient of this place and what won me over - were the people. I don't recall one negative comment about Pete's Pizza. And now I understand why. I found it profound the owner was nervous that I wouldn't like their pizza. She didn't serve me pizza tonight because it was my first time here, she served me a pizza that would make me return.
