Dr. Petersen is the best that you can get! I had mesh implanted in 2008 and it ruined my life. Insurance would not cover out of network. I talked to Dr. Petersen and he suggested removal. My wife drove me the 12 hours and we had the mesh removed. It was the best decision I have ever made at a fair price and I don't know if I would still be alive. I was facing "mesh" hernia surgery in 2 weeks. Thank God I found out about Dr. Petersen's no-mesh technique in time... My doctor had assured me that the mesh technique for hernia repair surgery was the no-brainer, no-worries way to go. The rate for post-operative hernia recurrence was only 2%. He even gave me the option of state-of-the-art robotic surgery involving only 3 small incisions with minimal pain, that would have me "back in the saddle" in just 2 weeks. Sounded good. When I asked him how many "mesh" surgeries he had performed, he smiled and looked to me as if he was counting. "Hundreds?" I offered. "O yeah," he said with confidence. I made my appointment for surgery and left the office fairly optimistic, with a brochure in hand that explained the minimally-invasive, allegedly no-complications, no-side-effects mesh surgery. It all seemed so "slam-dunk." But something about it was bothering me. A few days later I went online to do my due diligence and check out this so-called safe and easy mesh surgery. What was this? 20% chance of chronic pain?...Debilitating, dagger-like pain from "migrating" mesh?...Horror stories of men who had lost their reproductive powers?...Doctors washing their hands of any liability? Then I found Dr. Petersen's website. Honestly, after reading his information on the risks of mesh and the benefits of his technique, I felt both relieved and skeptical. Well, I figured, I may as well fill out the online questionnaire. It only took 5 or 10 minutes. The survey said Petersen's office would get back to me soon. This was Friday night. They contacted me on Monday. A couple phone calls later, I was talking with Dr. Petersen himself. I had prepared a list of questions, including this big one: "How many non-mesh hernia surgeries have you performed?" "7000," he answered matter-of-factly. "Around 7000?" I repeated the number, to be sure I heard it right. "It's 7000," he said with quiet confidence. Seven-thousand? Holy cow! "And your recurrrence rate?" "2.7," he replied, again without hesitation. Only .7% higher risk than with mesh surgery. At that point I remember thinking I would sure like to go to Las Vegas. Then the doctor had some questions for me, and he determined from my answers that with mesh surgery I would be at very high risk for chronic pain. I believed him, but still...he was 7 hours away by car. So, a few days later I called my "mesh doctor" and asked him if he performed non-mesh surgery or knew of any doctor in the local area who did. He said No to both questions. I thought about bringing up the potential side effects of mesh. But he hadn't volunteered that information during my office visit, so how could I trust his answer now? Dr. Petersen's frank yet soft-spoken manner had won me over. That was it. I was going to Vegas. I cancelled my mesh surgery and scheduled a surgery with Dr. Petersen. I have inguinal hernia since 28 year old, it did not bother me until 4 years ago, it gradually become so large that even with the hernia belt on I could not even drive a car, and I spent most of the time lying down, there is no life at all. Dr. Petersen performed an umbilical hernia repair on my husband, who was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the iiver. Many doctors are unwilling to do surgery on someone with cirrhosis, but Dr. Petersen took a look at him and was like, no sweat! He really is the best in the country. We found him after a lot of research and are very glad we went with him. He did a very good job overall and my husband healed well. There is a small scar on his belly button and it looks a little weird at first (because it looks for a while like there IS no belly button) but that seems to normalize over time, and I am very confident that Dr. Petersen did a better job than any other Doctor in the country could have possibly done. Period.So far so good, knock wood. The folks at No Insurance Surgery have also been pretty good about following up with him. The whole staff was very friendly and helpful as well. We could have had surgery done by my husband's doctors within his PPO network, but they would have used mesh. This would have been a $92,000 surgery that we could have gotten "for free" because we'd already reached our out of pocket maximum for the year, but we still opted to pay $6K out of pocket (thank GOD my Mom was willing to lend us the money) to see Dr. Petersen, because from what I've read, you just cannot trust a mesh repair to go smoothly. And for the record, my husband's hernia was the size of a grapefruit. My husband was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver in 2011 and thanks to alternative treatments he was able to bring his MELD score from a 28 to an 8 within 6 months. I learned that there are about 12 different treatments that are known to reduce scarring of the liver. Within a year after my husband's hospitalization for cirrhosis, he was able to run a mile in about 8 1/2 minutes, with NO TRAINING (my husband is the ultimate couch potato) and he was off every one of his medications. Not bad for someone who was told he'd probably have to go on disability and get a transplant. Unlike other doctors we have spoken to his care was clear on the initial consultation phone call. He did not push for surgery but actually gave us suggestions for alternate routes locally that we should explore first and if we were not satisfied we could come to see him. He even gave us places to go and a prescription for an ultra sound to get a second opinion. In 2006 I had been experiencing pain in my left lower abdomen and groin and sought out a highly recommended Urologist in San Francisco. He advised me that I was suffering a varicocele and hernias on my left and right lower abdomen (though I had not experienced any pain on the right side). The doctor referred me to another surgeon at UCSF to repair the hernias, while he would perform the varicocele repair. I then underwent laparoscopic hernia mesh repair surgery to repair the bilateral inguinal hernias. Shortly after the surgery I experienced pain in my left abdomen which was worse than the pain I had experienced with the hernia. The surgeon advised me that exercise would help with the pain. I sought out the Urologist after the pain continued as it was in my left groin as well. He advised me that it was "radiant" pain from the hernia repair and that he could prescribe large doses of NSAIDS to deal with the pain. This didn't help and was in serious danger of aggravating an ulcer I was recovering from. Several attempts were made to engage these doctors, but to no avail. The pain in the abdomen increased yearly, though at times it was tolerable so I could work. Last year the pain had grown to the point where it was a constant burning or freezing sensation. It made me sick to my stomach, I had loss of appetite and illness when I did eat. I had trouble sitting or standing without unbearable pain. It was affecting my mental health, my energy level and my ability to do my job - and most importantly my love life. Before my hernia surgery, I was very active and energetic - now I couldn't even walk without pain. The rate with which the pain was accelerating and affecting me made me worried that I would be disabled or worse. This Dr. removed my mesh several years ago. My life has been forever changed as I now have serious burning and Pains throughout my groin and private area that I never had before. The pain actually got worse after a few weeks from surgery. My current doctor tells me that scar tissue buildup from removing mesh and pieces of nerves that get removed are probably my problem?. Dr Petersen says and it is like a pain syndrome and not from the surgery but it seems like the surgery caused worse problems? He told me that he did not put the mesh in me but that does not make me feel better. He says that people who suffer after mesh removal that the pain is all part of the disease? The things he says do not agree with other doctors tell me? He says there is no such thing as permanent nerve damage even if a big chunk of nerve is taken out like I saw in the pictures on his website. I had an initial phone consult and was told to send in my CTscan CD. For a month after I couldn't get anything more than one call back from a receptionist. After that nothing for almost another month. When I gave a bad review on his facebook page. Almost instantly He tagged a group that jumped in and swarmed the comments. He said his records showed he hadn't talked to me yet. That was a problem for me as I had been waiting in pain for surgery that wasn't even being scheduled. I'm writing this on 3/13/17, 5 weeks following bi-laterl inguinal hernia surgery. I'm a 67+ yr old white male, 6'1'', 190 lbs, and am in very good health and active (both general and sexual). I was scared to death about the entire surgery thing. My experience with Dr. Petersen and his staff and the medical out-patient facility was excellent. I found Dr. Petersen online and filled out the online form. The next day I had a reply and was offered the opportunity to schedule a personal meeting with the Dr. I had "self-diagnosed" myself as having an inguinal hernia on the left side. As soon as Dr. Petersen looked at me, he said, "you have 2 hernias, one on each side". He took my vitals and told me my blood pressure was too high to have surgery and sent me home with instructions to home- monitor my BP and/or he could prescribe meds to lower my BP. I opted to home-monitor my BP for 2 weeks and email the results to his office. After 2 weeks of home-monitoring my BP, it was within acceptable limits and my surgery was promptly scheduled. I was scheduled for a pre-op 1 day before the surgery. I expected a routine meeting with Dr. Petersen, but instead, I was driven to the surgery center by "Mark" from Dr. Petersen's office, where I was given en EKG, my blood was taken, and I received a general physical. Mark drove me back to the Dr.'s office and I left. The following morning, I was scheduled to have surgery at 8a.m. in the out-patient surgery center. I arrived a few minutes early and was prepped by a very courteous and efficient nursing staff. The anesthesiologist and Dr. Petersen arrived at approx. 8:30a.m. Dr. Petersen paid me a short visit and assured me the surgery was very much a "routine" procedure for him and then I was wheeled into the operating room. I awoke from the anesthesia around 10a.m. and was given some juice and basic instructions for the next 24 hours and I was driven home (1 hour away) by my wife. The day of the surgery, I had very little pain and I had very little pain that first night. But...boy was the pain INTENSE the following morning and for the next 72 hours! I had been given a prescription for pain medicine, but (being "old school") I had resisted taking it. After meeting with Dr. Petersen the day following my surgery, I took one of the pain pills and it REALLY helped---except it caused constipation. Dr. Petersen looked at my incisions and was pleased with what he saw. I was very sore and I needed help getting in and out of bed and in and out of a recliner. My scrotum was black as coal and swollen to 3 times normal size. After taking the 1 pain pill, I took Tylenol at about 1/2 the normal dose for the next 3 days. I found that applying an ice pack to my scrotum was a God-send! If you have this surgery----absolutely use an ice pack to help reduce swelling and pain!!!! After the 3rd day, my pain was down to about a 3-4 on the 10 scale and after a week, it was down to about a 1-2. After the 4th day, my swelling was greatly reduced, thanks to the ice pack! Dr. Petersen's staff, Kari and Mark were just the best...and so were the nurses in the surgery center. Kari phoned me 4 weeks post-op to check on me. And, when was the last time you had a Dr. give you his personal cell phone number and tell you to call him if you has ANY questions? Dr. Petersen did this for me and I have no hesitation is giving him my highest recommendation. I feel so fortunate to have found Dr. Petersen and would certainly return to him if I need any type of surgical procedure in the future. At 5 weeks post-op, I am feeling fine (I am still "taking it easy"), the surgery seems to have been completely successful and "everything works" (if you know what I mean). I'm from Philadelphia so I was a little concerned about flying back after the surgery what a surprise the first night stayed in a hotel with just a little discomfort never needed to take any pain medicine even though they told me at the prescreen that I should have it. As a matter of fact the day after I flew home I flew to Puerto Rico for a weeks vacation. It's been almost 6 months since my hernia surgery with Dr. Petersen it was the best experience, No Pain whatsoever since day one I am a tile contractor and spend a lot of time working with heavy materials and on my knees a lot. I was back to work after the 1 month. He told me to take it easy and let it heal even though I felt ready to go back in about 10 days. Dr Petersen was the only Dr I found that would do the surgery without mesh, other Drs I talked to told me no one would do it without mesh and that was the only way it should be done.
