This dog park is conveniently located in the South End. If you go during the day you will only find pretty much only dog walkers with their clients. All the dog walkers are responsible and take good care paying attention to their many dogs - I actually like going better during the day than at night when owners are there. The fence is a little low in some stops so if you have a bigger dog they could easily jump over it if they wanted to. The park gets smelly because it is just rocks that have been urinated on baking in the sun. I've had some great experiences here but enough eh ones (i.e. Aggressive dogs with lazy owners, obsessive mounters with lazy owners) to be over this place. I come here for how close it is to my apartment but think it's worth the longer walk to the dog park near Back Bay station instead. read more

I am not a dog owner (I'm a Cat Lady), but my bf is, so this weekend when the weather was gorgeous we decided to take his dogs on a field trip here. Great decision. This place has a beautiful iron fence with a double-gated entry to keep the kids corralled. The gravel is great for clean-up and there are no muddy paws at the end of the day. There are trees and benches for us people, and there is a special segregated small space for tiny dogs lest they get trampled by larger ones (though we had a pug with us in the big space and didn't find it to be a problem). It was a pretty popular spot on a Saturday afternoon, and I was really impressed at how well all the dogs behaved together. The people were all very friendly as well. I think if you're single, this would probably be a great place to meet someone. The location is fabulous as the South End is so dog-friendly in general, and there are lots of dog shops and friendly small businesses in the vicinity to walk to. And there was tons of street parking, even on the weekend. My only complaints: 1) the water fountain was out of order (we assume it hasn't been turned on for the season yet?); 2) the bag dispenser was empty (we forgot ours, but thankfully didn't need any); 3) I only wish it was bigger! It's nice that they have two separate fenced in dog parks (one for large dogs and one for smaller dogs). The area is always clean. I love how it's gravel so even if it's rained recently the dogs won't get muddy, so it allows them to still play outside without getting too dirty! All of the other owners have always been very attentive and involved when I've been there. My dog, Leeloo, loves it. She runs and plays and meets new dogs and then is exhausted when we get home. A couple of notes: - There are pitbulls and pit mixes here frequently. I know this scares some dog owners, but the dogs I've seen at the park have been incredibly sweet and perfectly well-behaved. Leeloo always loves playing with them (and for reference, she's only a 30-lb. dachshund/terrier mix). - They don't provide poop bags, but there is a trash can. - There's a water fountain for the dogs, but it's shut down in winter. I always bring a water bottle with me for Leeloo. - The first time we went, Leeloo's feet were a little irritated when we got home. I don't think she was used to the rocks on her feet. However, it hasn't bothered her since. One major bonus is that there's plenty of shade, which is unlike most of the other dog parks we've been to. Parking is usually pretty easy to find. Worst case scenario, there's a lot a few blocks away (not that I really want to pay $12 to take my dog to the park). The best perk is that this place is huge compared to most dog parks. There's space enough for them to really let loose and run, get a good game of fetch going, or just walk the perimeter. read more

You have to be careful with the gates - it's to easy for dogs to run out as you are coming into the park - and the street is right there! Cool little dog park that is open year round and all day which is awesome. That said I think my expectation of a dog park is different from the people giving this place 5 stars. I find it too small and don't like that it doesn't have grass. The crushed stone is probably easier to maintain, but I found it to be dirty and a bit pee smelling when it was warmer and there were a lot of dogs there. I also found it was geared more to smaller dogs and considering mine are very large I was disappointed. I like the convenience of this dog park, but my pup Peanut would rather go to one of the dog parks that has grass. Peanut doesn't like running on the stones, they tend to get stuck in her paws. Also it's a good thing that her paws are tan because I've been told that the stones when wet turn dogs paws orange. Not sure why we didn't consider the park's convenient location when we moved in across the street, then a dusty, chain-link-enclosed area, but we now consider it a can't-do-without amenity for city living, even more so as it was redesigned and made official as the city's first dog recreation space (DRS) and named after an advocate, one Joe Wex. Not saying you should move if you have a dog, but in my book it can only be considered a neighborhood advantage. Peters Park in general is such a great park, and a model city park.... almost seems like a movie set sometimes when you look across and see dogs running, people with kids on the grassy areas, up-and-coming pros (and less-coordinated folks like me) hitting tennis balls, folks of all sizes, colors and shapes shooting hoops and a South End Little League game at the other end, providing the soundtrack. Makes me feel good about the South End, and Boston. The guys who maintain the place (I believe from Hope House?) do a fantastic job, and the park organizers seem pretty good for what most likely is a thankless volunteer gig, although they kid themselves when they subtly "encourage" the park rules and ask the rest of us to self-police it from there. The result is very schoolyard, where the small minority who don't care to follow the rules, if spoken to, will in turn try to intimidate, not change their behavior, if they band together they'll openly chit-chat about you, and generally make you regret you even tried. That leads me to the only two downsides, not so much about the DRS, but the people who use, or don't use, it... As mentioned by some of the other reviewers, there are the dog owners (and more often park regulars, or one or two of the dog-walkers who use the park to make a living) who unleash their dog(s) and then chat, or otherwise occupy themselves with their cell phones, etc., not noticing or caring about what the pooch in their care is doing, be it pooping, attempting to mount an uninterested canine, or maybe barking incessantly... dogs bark, but we're supposed to TRY to train our pets to not disturb everybody else around them, fellow-park visitors and more importantly the residents who abut the park. Sure, these people might pick up or maybe make a half-hearted attempt IF they notice, but that's a big if. There's a lack of caring, and an assumption that somebody else will do what they should be doing. And finally, what baffles me are the folks who guide their dogs to pee and poop on the really nice plantings around the DRS that are installed for all to enjoy, killing them. Or who waddle their lazy butts onto the grassy areas to let their pet do their business, open areas where PEOPLE LIKE TO LIE ON THE GRASS, THROW A FRISBEE OR PLAY WITH THEIR CHILDREN. It's disgusting, obnoxious, and incredibly self-absorbed if those folks were to claim they didn't realize. And if it's because your four-legged companion can't get along with other dogs and thus you can't take them into the designated dog area you're STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO, then find one of the bizillion other places, like the rest of the population who walk their dogs in the city do, and clean up after your pooch(es). DON'T BE SO SELFISH, RUINING THOSE GRASSY AREAS FOR ALL OTHERS! K, I'm done. read more

I totally loved this park. The stones with the concrete border all look clean and new and very inviting. There is adequate trash, and there may even be cleanup bags supplied- I have my own, so I didn't really look. The small dog area is great, but when it started to empty out, I took my Yorkie into the big dog area. It is big enough where, even with the bigger dogs roughhousing, Mason could stay safely out of the way and observe, as he likes to do (he's a little shy). There were plenty of benches for the people to sit on, and everyone was so nice. The only thing is the water fountain didn't seem to be working, and that would have been helpful, but I think in general, if you are used to bringing your own water for the pooch, it's ok. Great little dog park, I walk by it every day on my way to work and it's always full of well-behaved, playful pups. Lots of dog-owners in the area, so it's a real draw of this part of the neighborhood. It's separated in two halves, for smaller breeds and larger ones. It also has a water fountain to keep the pups hydrated. Only visited once since the redesign , now I remember why. The old design was great for.... DOGS. Grass,dirt water, SPACE TO RUN, and KIDS what more could a dog ask for. Plus the people that frequented were great, friendly, and PAID ATTENTION to their dogs. All the dogs played together no matter the breed or size. Their owners actually talked to each other in addition to knowing each others dogs. The new design is great for PEOPLE concrete, metal benches, sculptures not sure if I was at a museum or a DOG PARK. Today got into a argument with one of the "board of directors" and was asked to leave because we bought our 4 yr son inside the park with us. Guess we were supposed to leave him outside the gate. So much for being a PUBLIC park. If you want to bring your dog to a DOG PARK the Randolph dog park is the way to go. Secluded in a wooded area, fenced in, different obstacles for your dog to run in, around, over, fresh water for the dogs,dirt, grass, and PLENTY of SPACE. No up-tight, pretentious rules, great friendly people. No "board of directors" to ask you to leave. Clean up after your pooch, keep an eye on it , and no excessive barking are the only rules here. P.S. Peter's park dog run is supposed to be a fantastic dog park. Then why do a lot of dog owners have their dogs play on the grassy field OUTSIDE the dog park ? I recently moved to the Boston area and was disappointed to find a severe lack of dog parks. Sure, there are plenty of off lease parks - but that wont do for us dog owners who have dogs that wander away. Many of us need a fence! For the past few months, I had been going to the dog park in Somerville, but today we found Peters and it was a gem. It's clean, full of pebbles (rather than dirt), has a nice small and large door area and lots of friendly folks. I also love how there are trees for shade for both the dogs and the people. As well as water fountains (something lacking at Somerville). Thank you Boston for this great park and for allowing for me to have a quiet night as my crazy dogs soundly sleep at my feet. read more

Clean and well maintained dog park.....BUT ITS A JOKE MY LITTLE DOG WAS BITTEN and the owner denied it even though it happened infront of my face... Being a city girl myself, people use this as a doggie day care. I have two dogs, One is a 8 month 55 pound puppy and the other 9 month 11 pound puppy. There is a small separate area for little dogs to play and be off to them selves but its inadequate. The owners of the dogs show up to this tiny playground and you get a mix of aggressive docile large small dogs all around each other playing with no control. WOW!!!! What an uber COOL find for my kids- thanks fellow Yelpers! Took the babies (2 pug puppies) to the dog park today, and they had a BLAST! I love the fact that there is a separate area for smaller dogs (under 25lbs). Lots of gravel, enclosed, safe space for OFF LEASH (yay!!) play, and benches under trees for the parents. There's even a sort of like "cement track" that circles the play area, in case parents want to walk, or walk with their four legged kids. The place was very clean, too. People take cleaning the poop very seriously, as they should. We made some pet friends and human friends, as well, LOVE it! It's gonna be a regular hangout, I can already tell. read more

Peters is by far the best dog park in the area. We have a hyper golden retriever and no yard, so we drive 30 minutes from Brookline almost every day to use Peters. We come here because: 1) We love the pea stone gravel. Zoe eats grass instead of playing, so here we don't have to worry about her eating it. Also, she doesn't get muddy like at a grass park. 2) It's open! In Brookline, the town always closes the parks when they feel like it, so it could be weeks where they say it's too muddy to use the fields--sorry, but my dog can hardly go one day without running off leash--and we have been kicked off the fields during off leash hours when there was no sign announcing a field closure by the Brookline cops before--terrible. I had to walk her 6 miles that day because I couldn't use the park for 10 minutes to let her run! Also, they are the only dog park open at night, because they have lights for use after dark. Especially in the winter, this is sooo useful, because not many people get home to bring their dog to the park before it gets dark at 4pm! 3) It didn't take us long to figure out the way the crowds work, and we usually come at off hours, so we are pretty much the only ones there. There are some cons, of course, because nothing is perfect. Those would be that parking can be tough (although we always manage, even if we have to walk a couple of blocks), it can get very very crowded (unless you go at off times or in less than ideal weather), some people don't clean up after their dogs (but do they ever?), and during weekdays, lots of dog walkers will bring 4 or 5 dogs to the park who are often out of control, since 1 person cannot handle 5 dogs at once. read more

I shop at C-Mart regularly so I was very happy to find a fenced-in dog park located so close to it. Brought my new dog down here today to check it out - she loved it! There were many dogs of all sizes playing around, and most of them were well socialized. As others have noted, the double-gate entry is fantastic. The other owners seemed friendly and cleaned up after the dogs (which is a nice change from the parks near me). There were brief moments of rough play, nothing too serious and the owners were quick to break it up. The dog fountain was frozen so it might be a good idea to bring some water of your own in the winters. I also noticed that they were out of poo bags, so bring your own! read more

i love Peters Park. got new playground fixed up few years ago, with some other nice projects including a gated dog park, on top of the existing ball courts, this is certainly a neighborhood gem. every year i take the kiddies here to collect fall items, i can find all colors and varieties of leaves as well as acorns and pinecones (if the squirrels don't get to them first, that is!), all in one place! and the scenery is just beautiful! the park is large enough to allow many groups of people to move around/rest/play comfortably, but small enough to confine children attempting to run off chasing a squirrel (trust me, i can never go back to the Commons because of that!!). i've seen individuals enjoying outdoor lunch there, groups of bootcampers exercising, elderly practicing tai chi, daycare children playing, high school kids chilling, not to mention dog owners and mothers of toddlers taking their loved ones out for some action under the sun. oh the diversity!! this is a happy place! now, if only we don't occasionally find random "litters" on the ground... may also be beneficial to have one porta John in the area??? unless DD across the street is happy to accommodate, which i doubt it is. read more

Since the redesign of this park, my pup can't get enough of this place! Parking is fairly easy to come by around this area during the day, even on the weekend. I do wish there was a bit more grass along with the rocks, but that really is the only downside there. This is a great little neighborhood park filled with a lot of good energy. They have a basketball court, one tennis court, a handball court, a little league baseball field, a jungle gym, and a little dog park on the side. The park has a lot of grass and is perfect for a little picnic or just to lay out in the sun. My husband and I moved into the area months ago and on the first nice day in Boston we grabbed our tennis racquets and headed to the tennis court. We showed up minutes after a couple had just gotten on the court so we hung around in the sun for an hour waiting for our turn. In talking to the people that finished playing we found that the rules are about 45 minutes to an hour of play time if people are waiting to play after you and it's first come first serve (no pun intended). We'll be taking advantage of this great little neighborhood gem for years to come! read more

Brought my boyfriend's boxer, Alfred, here for the first time this past weekend, and it was nearly impossible to get him to leave!!! He was just adopted about a month ago, so this was my first "social experiment" with him to see how he would interact with other people and dogs. Much to my surprise and delight, he did amazingly well!! We stopped at Polka Dog Bakery first, then walked straight here afterward. Love the double-gated entry and the trash cans everywhere so that you can properly dispose of dog waste. There was an area for smaller dogs as well, but there were no dogs in there. All the dogs were in the main area, and I didn't see any dogs getting overly aggressive. For the most part, they were all either hanging out around their owner, or running around chasing other dogs and playing. The main "play" area is gravel, which is pretty nice because it makes poop clean-up easy, and the dogs don't get dirty paws in the process. Most owners are great about cleaning up after their dogs, but I did see a few stray droppings around. Around the perimeter of the gravel area are some benches and trees for the owners. They also provide some shade for the pooches, which was nice, especially on this day, since it was pretty warm and sunny. There was also a dog fountain there, placed nice and low so that all dogs could have access to it. Unfortunately, it was either off or not working, which majorly SUCKED :-( I really hope they get that fixed soon! Everyone here is SO nice. There are some regulars there, because some of the owners know other owners and dogs on a first-name basis, which is pretty cool. Everyone was petting my dog as he walked by, and Alfred made some great new friends. Owners were good about looking after their dog and pulling them away if they saw they were not playing nice. This is an awesome dog park, and I can't wait to bring Alfred back for more playdates. I just wish that parking in the area were a little easier to find (I got a ticket! Boo!). read more

Being from NC, my dog used to have plenty of places to run, (even though as a bulldog, he really doesn't need that much space!) so finding Peter's Park really excited me! He now has a place to run around off the leash. I actually really like that it isn't full of grass because of my dog's allergies, and all the dogs and owners seem to be great every time I have visited. I have taken him a couple times, but it's a bit far from our apartment right now so once I move closer I'll take him more. Nice, enclosed dog park. The gravel is easy to maintain and the dogs don't seem to mind. Bonus: puppy only gets a little dusty, not muddy. It's not all that large which is a nice change. Sometimes I just want to sit and watch my dog play. Other times I want to walk too so we'll go someplace big like Stodder's Neck. I think little dogs especially like this park. Finally found a Handball court in Boston! I live in Quincy and this is about 30 min away driving. No fences but the walls are very pretty.

The dog run in unsafe. The double gates are constantly left open by kids, dog owners and those just going into the dog run, without even having a dog. There is also a utility gate, which opens up directly into the dog run, wide enough for a truck, when there is need for maintenance. There is NO lock on this, and people, with out dogs, just open this and walk through. I have personally contacted the city of Boston, the Parks Dept and the Friends of Peters Park, but no one seems to concerned with the welfare of those the dog run was created for, dogs! read more

Just a great overall park. What can you really say about it? Big enclosed area where your dogs can run around off leash. Sometimes there are lots of dogs. Sometimes you are alone. Sometimes there are big dogs. Sometimes there are small dogs and sometimes both. People will be people. Dogs will be dogs. It's way better than having them run around on Washington Street! The city of Boston (and surrounding areas) do a great job at making these spaces for our dogs. Peters Park is just one of the great parks in the Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, JP area. Great little park that I've had the pleasure of living next to for the past couple years. Lot's going on, and gets really busy in the spring/summertime and weekends. Great rubberized playground for the kids, big dog park with a separate spot for small dogs, full baseball field, tennis courts, 2 basketball courts (with lights). The crowd there is pretty diverse, but its very safe and the police patrol the park regularly throughout the evening. Be careful about parking your car on Washington in the fall (little league season). Those guys hit a TON of foul balls in that direction...#brokenwindow. Also, removed a star for a dog poop overload. Poop in the grass. Poop on the sidewalks. Poop in the dog park. Poop everywhere.
