I book an appointment 2 weeks in advance to get my dog groomed. Dropped her off the girls at the front were extremely rude and customer service was awful. An hour later they call and tell me to come pick up my dog they aren't allowed to take her because she's in heat. Do not take your small dog to the the Sugar House Petco Grooming department. This is the worst service I've ever received. They abruptly sent my dog home for "persistent coughing" and when they called they said it was to the point where it was dangerous. I rushed over to pick her up thinking I would need to take her to the vet immediately. The girl who had been grooming her was at the front when we arrived, the interaction with her was super awkward. Instead of rushing to get our dog who I thought was in distress she stood there and told us about a lump she found on her neck. I was anxious to get our dog so I asked her to go get her. She went to the back and brought up our soaking wet dog who had been shaved on the body but not cleaned up on the face or legs. I was expecting that she would be coughing uncontrollably but she was not. In fact she hasn't coughed once since we picked her up. I called the store to speak to the manager and she said that she made the call to send her home. I don't know what their motive was for sending her home and not wanting to groom her, but I guess it doesn't matter, we will never go back there. I personally think they do not like small dogs who get nervous when being groomed. read more

Tried to exchange or return a dog door I received for Christmas but did not have a gift receipt. Wendi (the manager?) asked for my parents' phone numbers to "prove" they bought it, but it didn't come up in the system, and a refund could only be given within 30 days with the receipt, or store credit within 60 days with a receipt. She said we could do a "corporate" return that would take 6 weeks for a refund. Then she changed her mind and said that was not an option either. Finally, she suggested that we call the manufacturer's customer service phone number on the back of the box to see if they would be willing to refund or exchange it. Not only was this the worst refund policy I've seen in a long time, but she was snotty about it and even suggested that it wasn't purchased there and they don't even carry that brand despite a giant display of them right in the middle of the store. Wendi did admit that the return policy changed very recently. This is why I will not return to this or any other Petco. read more

Unfortunately I can't leave a positive review I was upsold on a veterinary shots package but I assume this was the best course of action for my dog and I had trust in the professionals. During my last visit I was informed that my package had expired. This is frustrating because not only had I not been told that it could expire but it was also physically impossible for my dog to get the last round of shots because he was under a year. So by the time he could actually get the shots I had to rebuy them. No information regarding an expiration date was communicated to me. This is textbook scamming behavior and extremely frustrating due to the fact that both the package and new shots are quite expensive as all as the miss use of trust. read more

She came from the shelter and has a few problems that I am already aware of and the vet kept trying to up charge me to test for things that I already knew about. So many dead fish, blatantly sick fish not being quarantined. The only workers who do their job are the young teenage cashiers. Noticed a swordtail in the wrong tank (should have been in the one next to it with the other swordtails) nipping at fins of multiple gouramis and ripping them out in front of me, no workers in sight except those busy at the register on the other end of the store. These fish were in serious distress so I grabbed the net and swooped it up and quickly put it into the tank next to it with the other sword tails. Suddenly an older lady who worked there came up very aggressively and started lecturing about asking for help, to which I responded to her if she had been on the floor doing her job (store was completely empty minus those checking out) I could have asked her but wasn't going to wait 10 minutes while fins are being ripped off these poor fish. Old lady continued to interrupt me and get in my space, my very non confrontational boyfriend even got so uncomfortable that he walked away to the other side of me and out loud said to her "I need you to give me my 6 feet of space now please" as she was inches from my face with hers. Didnt seem concerned about the live animals in the store, but moreso only about bearing heard while she repeated herself over and over for 3 minutes straight. I had to actually turn away from her and ignore her while she continued to whine at me before she walked off. Take better care of your animals please and leave the retired ignorant old women out of your employee list. She didn't even know anything about the basics of fish but is the one in charge of handling ‍ wouldn't let this worker net a fish out and stress it before taking it home if it was the only fish store in the state. Just have to say as someone who actually cares about animals, I would have thanked the customer for acting in an emergency and then told them how to better find someone next time if they see no employees rather than acting the way this lady did. since september I have been going back and forth with this location and corporate because they greatly messed up my dogs grooming. My dog who has terminal cancer and the week of my wedding. a case was opened the day after, due to store hours ending, and I have had to call and email multiple times just to get the same response of "an investigation will happen" as it is almost the end of the year I know that there is no way I get my money back. The location made me pay before they would bring my dog out and my groomer had "gone home already" so I couldn't speak to anyone day of. I'm incredibly disappointed and angry that my dog was injured and shaved bare without any explanation or care whatsoever. read more

The grooming department gets five stars - we love Jayce! She is so sweet, and our pup always gets returned to us looking adorable. He is nervous and ornery so she must really have a way with him. I love how the grooming area is right up front and easy to access in these times of social distancing. They also have their own register for checkout which I appreciate. The store itself isn't my favorite. The layout is confusing, I swear every time I go to look for our staple wet and dry foods they have moved. It's definitely a little dingy. However, the employees are all efficient and helpful! read more

Not the best Petco around. You can tell the employees are trying hard but they just don't have the knowledge. I'm really basing this off of my purchase of hamster gear. I noticed some of the hamsters are mislabeled what kind of breeds they are. The employees don't know any better to correct that. They over populate the tanks. I watched five hamsters try to run on one wheel, it was crazy. The next tank over there was about eight hamsters fighting each other over and over again. I think I'm actually going to start ordering all my pet stuff online now. Which is probably what I should be doing anyway due to the outrageous prices here. read more

This Petco is fine, and just like all other Petco stores, you'll find your pet supply basics. It is quite small, though, I guess because space is a premium in the area, but even the ceiling seems lower than other locations. All this conspires to make it feel a bit dreary and dark, even slightly dirty, which in turn makes it less enjoyable to shop. It's not like I love shopping at Petco anyways. There are many great options of locally owned natural pet shops that I would prefer, but sometimes you have to go to one of the chains. That's fine, but this one would be my last choice out of them. On the other hand, the employees are friendly and nice enough, and if you are in Sugarhouse the location is convenient. read more

Came in for aquatic plants, took FOREVER (like 15 min) to find someone to help. This happens every time I've come in. Prices were all over the place making difficult to find the price of what I wanted. Many plants covered in black algaeI which sucked. So disappointed in my recent experience. I have been coming here since long before the pandemic and everyone has been friendly and accommodating but after my experience today I won't be coming back ever. I am sensitive to COVID and before today people have always been happy to work with me so I can buy crickets curbside for my sweet little chameleon. Today I called up and was ANGRILY told no. The logic for denying me this service was also somewhat circuitous -- it seemed like they just were eager to NOT help. "Hello, I'd like to buy some live crickets curbside." "We can't do it. It's actually illegal for someone else to buy something using your credit card." "Okay, no problem. I'm happy to pay with cash then. They have done this for me before at least a dozen times." "No. We can't do it. We're really cracking down on that now. Anyone who has done it for you before should get in trouble for having helped you. You can just send someone else in to pick them up." "I actually can't, I live alone." And I should have said "also, sending someone into the store who lives with me defeats the purpose of not going in the store because it puts me at pretty much the same level of risk " I still do not understand how it's ILLEGAL for an employee to come to my car, take cash from me, walk inside, put the cash into the register, walk over and put crickets into a bag and bring them out to me. I'm no legal expert but I'm pretty sure none of that is illegal. After I got off the phone with this not so helpful person, I discovered I can just order live crickets online from PetSmart and pick them up curbside without any hassle. Gosh, maybe someone should call the feds because that sounds SUPER ILLEGAL Totally done with Petco and their insane pandemic policies. Today I called and asked if it had been restocked yet and a young lady said she would have somebody go back and check. I took my Baby Girl (Shilo) for her grooming at this Petco location. Their services are more expensive than other places, but I was thinking is Petco right? Known name right? After a rush grooming they called and said that Shilo was ready, my husband pick her up and when he got home I notice that Shilo went straight to her bed, very unusual for her, I called her up and she didn't came, I went to her bed and noticed a injury on er hind leg. I called Petco right away and as always "they NEVER" pick up the phone, I called the store manager, Ash and he said that the groomers were gone for the day. I told Ash my girl came back with an injury and I needed to get a call from the Grooming manager. I stopped by the next day, and an old lady "Sharon" said that she was the manager at the grooming Salon, she was rude, aggressive and uneducated. Instead of an apology she mouthed off and ask me not to bring Shilo there again!! I wonder what kind of training in customer service she got and I wonder if Petco headquarters agree with her. I have shop at Petco for all of my pets, but Sharon has nothing to worry about, I wouldn't take my Shilo there again to get hurt or worse. Shilo is not just a pet for us, she is our baby. This Petco store sells just about everything you could want or need for your pets. Although Petco is really more of a pet supply store then a pet store because they don't have any large animals like cats or dogs, they do have lots of fish, some reptiles, mice and rats, and some small birds like parakeets. The store feels a little crammed because they sell so much but it's generally pretty well-stocked and clean (that is until a dog owner leaves Rover's little mess on the floor and doesn't tell anyone... Hey old feller, yer gettin a little long in the tooth. I mean, this store is perfectly serviceable, and surely I don't think you'd call it untidy or unkempt. But it just feels a little old. Perhaps it's the funky layout. It sort of cuts off at a diagonal across the front of the store and throws the whole place into a two-section scenario. Not the funkiest layout I've seen (the two-story location in San Francisco near Fisherman's Wharf was all kinds of crazy and had some seriously creative aisles, but I believe it's now closed). Still, there's the typical assortment of all things pet. It just feel like it needs to be refreshed. And you know, in that location, maybe it will always feel that way no matter how long ago it was built or remodeled. On the plus side, there's tons of shopping around this, so if you need to pick up pet food you can kill lots of birds with one corporate stone (Whole Foods, Barnes & Noble, Old Navy, etc) and not waste time darting across town. And parking is easy. You may have to circle the lot, but there are lots of parking spaces. read more

Okay, today my wife and I went to Sugar House Petco at 9:15 AM. Went to buy 5 or 6 bags of Plato's Dried Baltic Sprats. Website said on sale for $8.49. Said they were in stock. My wife entered first with our dog. I came in a bit behind. Noticed a brown bag with three cans of dog food sitting in a cart in the entryway. I picked them up brought them to the woman/manager cashiering. I said, " I think someone left this in their cart" Her terse, condescending response, "That's Petsmart. This is Petco!" I replied, " Maybe they.." Immediately cut off, She said tersely, "This is not Petsmart, this is Petco. They are two different companies!" and turned away. My wife in a different part of the store heard her raise her voice at me. I went and threw the bag of cans back in the cart. Found my wife. She told me there was only one bag of the sprats on rack anyway, marked full price, $13.99 and there are no on sale signs to be found. She decided that we wouldn't patronize this Petco anyway. The cashiers are helpful & sweet so the one star belongs to them otherwise I'd give 0 overall if I could. Since yesterday my gut was telling me to not bring my dog here since the lady who made the grooming appointment was unpleasant (First time bringing her here as I'm from out of state). The last picture is my dog before her grooming and the previous ones are of the absolutely terrible crooked grooming that was done to her. I wanted to cry from being so upset and disgusted with how they left her. I just wanted a hair TRIM mostly on her face to get the teddy cut but the groomer SHAVED HER COMPLETELY even after we had agreed she was going to do the teddy cut. And no, my dog did NOT have mats as the groomer claimed. I had even showered & brushed her the night before without a single mat on her fur. The last picture is the cut/ burn mark on her private area caused by the groomer. They also completely shaved a beautiful black standard poodle and poor dog looked as bad as mine. Waste of $63. And then when we finally got in they said they couldn't groom him because his vaccine wasn't up to date by a few days. Our original appointment was a week ago. Thanks for nothing Petco. I watch my uncles French Bull dog (Svetlana) every now and then and struggle with her foul breath and overall smell. I've researched different ways to rid the odor and can't seem to find anything that helps. I occasionally drop her off to Maddie the groomer, to do a quick teeth cleaning and bath but she apparently is no longer with the company. With the news of her being gone I decided to go in and find a shampoo the would be the best fit for Svetlana and her stinky bod. Upon arrival the cashier immediately recognized Svetlana and started talking to me about my uncle and the regular services he brings Svetlana in for. Absolutely horrible service! I went with my sister to do a walk in nail trim and buff for my dog. We stood at the counter for a few mins when a lady walked in out of nowhere, walked right past us into the grooming area and didn't say anything. She came out and asked us if we had an appointment. I told her that we didn't but that we would like to do a walk in appointment for my dogs nails. She then told us that due to the Coronavirus, they were not doing walk in appointments. (No signs anywhere stating this). She said that we would have to schedule an appointment. Now keep in mind, the salon was absolutely empty. My sister asked if we could schedule online and she stated that we could only schedule by phone. (This location's phone recording even says that you can schedule online). We exited the store and I immediately called the number. I followed the recording to get to the grooming department and no one answered. My sister went back inside to see if we could just schedule in person and there was a different groomer telling another customer that they were not taking walk in appointments and that she could make an appointment for tomorrow. When this customer asked what time, he stated "I don't know. Morning? Afternoon?" What an absolute joke. What's even worse is that according to other yelp reviews, this location has had customer service issues with its grooming department for the last two years and obviously has done nothing about it. We noticed our dog's bum was bothering him so we brought him in to get his anal glands expressed. We called ahead by a few hours to make our appointment. The groomer, Tonya, was so friendly and accommodating right from the start! When we walked in, she remembered our dog's name from the call we'd had earlier. We explained to her the problems we'd been noticing in our dog and she rang us up for the services. She told us not to take the receipt up to the cash register yet because she was going to try to express his anal gland and if it didn't work, she wasn't going to charge us if that wasn't the problem after all. It felt like Tonya really cared about our dog and his well-being which meant so much to us because we'd been worried about him. (It was the problem - he's doing much better now, in case anyone was worried). When we were leaving, Tonya gave us her business card, gave us some advice, and gave Charles a bag of treats to say bye. She was really complimentary towards our dog! We left feeling happy and like our dog was well cared for. read more

I never post anything negative based on one visit... the customer service of this location has gone down dramatically since I first started coming to this location three years ago. Horrible customer service. When I've asked for help over the last few months I have had various levels of service from 'not my department' (not from someone in the grooming) to 'I don't know'. The guy who stressed it wasn't his department quickly disappeared in the back near the fish... and neither offered to help us find someone who could help. On today's trip, I asked a simple question of the cashier. She also made it clear that she didn't know and after I was agitated said she could find someone from the back. I just had my chi groomed, I only do the bath and nails. When I arrived there was a walk-in just ahead of me, I had scheduled my dogs appointment ahead of time but they took the walk in before me. Typically it takes 40 minutes to max an hour but I was told he would be done in 2 and a half hours now.. That was frustrating enough. About 10 shy of 2 hours he was done. He was clean but his nails were barely even trimmed and had loose hanging pieces and they were all uneven. I paid close to $50 for my tiny dog to be fully done. That's not cheap so to have half as*ed work done is extremely disappointing. The woman who did him was very nice and I'm sure she's actually good at her job but I could tell she was overwhelmed because the other 6 or so employees had left and I guess she was left to do 4 dogs at the same time alone. Regardless I shouldn't have been punished for her crappy coworkers. I have come here forever and this was the most disappointing time, I'm not sure if I'll be back I feel like I just threw away 48 bucks. read more

I have been frequenting Petco since I got my pitbull puppy 5 months ago. I've only bought the best (and most expensive) food, toys, and product for him. I love my dog. Yesterday after caling 3 times and being left on hold for 5+ minutes each time, I left my number and info and was promised a call back in the morning. I ended up having to call back and got put on hold again. Upon talking to a front end employee, I was greeted with a less than stellar attitude. He was rude, short and kept repeating himself. I understand a staff shortage and I told him that-But I just needed to make an appt. He was rude before the groomer called me back and continued to dispute with me. The website for Petco says a 'puppy' is qualified as such by their weight and age (under 6 months, 40 lbs or under) the groomer told me it was 35 lbs. When I explained my trepidition and confusion, she did not step back but instead stood her ground and got defensive. She was rude and again, short before I gave up. After talking to a friend who heard the whole thing she suggested I call and talk to a manager. I work in a grocery store and I know how important it is to have good customer service--So I called the manager who was immediately defensive and rude. He seemed to not be listening to what I was saying (the employees were rude) and kept focusing on them being short staffed. I understand being short staffed, but that does not excuse being rude. After he began to say, "they were on edge" he then hung up on me. Well, I'll stop spending money at Petco, furthermore: I'll make sure my dog owner friends stop shopping there, as well. The store is beautiful after the remodel. Took my dog for nail trimming and he got the perfect paw pedicure package (pppp $60). Pads exfoliated, nails trimmed and filed. Nail polish and paw pad treatment/protection. Groomers are very knowledgeable and helpful. In this weather keeping my dogs feet in good shape is a priority. Definitely recommend! read more

Petco is not my first choice when it comes to buying food for our Lhasa Apso. I much prefer the smaller stores around town, especially the Dog's Meow. However, there are times when you need things other than food and Petco is the best place to find them. Just this last week, I bought a plastic dog gate for our entry door in the living room, it was a great price, and just what we needed. This particular Petco is very large, and they have a lot of very good employees that work there to help you find things throughout the store. It's also in a great location. It's in the same parking lot as Bed Bath and Beyond and Whole Foods Market. They have a large assortment of dog foods both in the dry and canned variety, but they don't happen to carry the one brand that our dog likes to eat, Stella and Chewy's freeze dried raw food. If I find myself needing something other than dog food, this will be my first stop. It's just that I like to keep the smaller places in business whenever I can. That's just me, your mileage may vary. 3 stars. read more
