We LOVE this petco and frequent it often. Donald is absolutely outstanding. He always goes above and beyond to make sure we have everything we needed. Not only is he incredibly knowledgeable, but he's also patient and genuinely passionate about helping customers and their pets. He took the time to answer all of my questions thoroughly, offered helpful recommendations without being pushy, and made sure I felt confident in my purchases. It's rare to come across someone who truly cares about providing great service, and Donald definitely does. Brenda was just as amazing! She is so kind, sweet, and welcoming. Her warm personality made the entire experience even better. She greeted me with a smile, was attentive, and made me feel valued as a customer. It's clear she enjoys what she does, and that positive energy makes a big difference. Overall, this was one of the best retail experiences I've had in a long time. The young man working the checkout is kind of spaced out and makes mistakes with the change and ringing up items. That's a little unnerving. The other clerks don't seem to be very knowledgeable about different types of pet foods. So I think the staff there just needs better training, honestly. Do not get your dogs groomed over here. They canceled my appointment a week ahead. Left me a voicemail today & canceled my appointment couple minutes before I could respond back. I called the location asking why they canceled my appointment and she said she called me to confirm my appointment a couple weeks ago. Text shows that you need to cancel 24 before the appointment. My appointment is not until next week so why cancel my appointment if it's no where near the date. I will never groom with pet co anymore. read more

I set up an appointment for 2 dogs - 1 for a bath and the other for the full works. I called my vet to get them to send the rabies info on them. I arrived early but they couldn't find the rabies info. After speaking to the the staff they told me if I had the receipt it would have the info on it. I left and got the receipt for the dog that needed the full grooming. I was back within 15 minutes. Instead of taking my dog, they said they didn't have time. However they'd take the info down for the next visit. I told them not to bother. Why would they tell me to bring the receipt if I had it and then not take him? Very disappointed. I realize they aren't responsible for not having the vaccine records. However their whole attitude was lackadaisical and indifferent. read more

How about no stars? The people clearly have no idea what they are doing. I don't know if they just hire anyone as a groomer, but these people fucking suck. My dog was fuck up from the floor up. He is a miniature schnauzer and we decided to go with the schnauzer cut (duh). They shaved my poor baby almost bald!!!!! I can see his damn skin!!!! He's walking around here looking like a pink rat. They are beyond unprofessional. No one answers the phone there either. They just let it ring and ring. You can hear it when you are in the store too. They just act like they are too busy to answer. I've had a few bad experiences her recently, but yesterday was the worst. I had a product I was trying to return (without the receipt - totally my fault). The manager told me she would NOT process the return (even though I bought the product just this month) unless I had a receipt. This conflicts with their store return policy both online AND in the store right at the register! She added that they would not do a return without of receipt of over $10. Not sure if this is something specific to this store, but that policy was not anywhere to be found in writing. They eventually were able to locate my pals account, but it was a LENGTHY process getting there. They were not kind about it. They tried to make me feel like I was in the wrong, but was only going off of their policy. read more

I must admit that after having used all the top groomers in the Birmingham area over the years that I was totally impressed with this place! Today I took my sweet little Bella to be groomed at Petco in preparation for Christmas pictures. (Brook Highland Plaza, Birmingham, AL) I had a very in-depth discussion with the girl at the desk AND the girl who would be actually grooming her. We specifically discussed trimming the face close, discreetly trimming the potty area, cutting the chest and belly close to prevent the slight matting that had occurred in that area since her last visit and buffing her nails so they would not be sharp or rough. She even brought out a sample board to confirm lengths and I repeated that I did not want her cut short except in the couple of areas we discussed. The groomer confirmed everything we discussed and I left Bella in their care. Three hours later I get the call that she is ready for me to pick up. When they brought her out my heart fell to my feet. They had COMPLETELY shaved her!!!!!! All of her hair gone!! The shave wasn't even a good one and there was various different lengths of hair on top of her head and random missed patches over her body. Her tail completely butchered. And her face was left long like she has a mustache or beard. The girl came out to talk to me and proceeded to act like she had no clue what I was upset about. This upset me even more. They then bring the manager out who is completely unsympathetic to what has happened to my Bella. I was and still am devastated. While my money was refunded, it doesn't put her hair back, it doesn't fix the fact that the planned Christmas pictures are ruined. It also doesn't fix that fact that not one person involved in this scenario even apologized or acted concerned that they completely butchered my Bellas coat and left her with no fur for the winter. I can not even convey my anger, disappointment, and distress over this whole ordeal. I have had mixed experiences at this location. Most of the time the employees look like they are being tortured and stand around talking amongst themselves rather than helping customers. There are exceptions, of course, but they are rare. They DO have some great deals on items, especially if you have their rewards card, which also gives you a $5 coupon after you spend so much there. The selection of items seems to be good as well. I've primarily been in there for fish and aquariums and related items. They have some nice plants (live, silk and plastic) and just about anything you'd need to start an aquarium. My biggest gripe is the amount of bettas that they have. There are shelves full of them and then more stacked on the sink area of the fish station. Why so many? I've seen multiple fish that were dead (and looked like they'd been dead for a while) and others that are obviously sick. I actually rescued one that had been sitting in his little cup for over a month. Every time I went in there, he was still sitting there. Finally I had to get him. He's now healthy and happy. I understand that the employees can only do so much, but the company as a whole really needs to educate their employees and take better care of the animals. If they treated the animals better and the employees were actually helpful, they would get higher marks. read more

Took my Australian Shepherd/Golden Retriever to get groomed. They did a great job on an outline trim other than a few overlooked spots that we took care of ourselves at home. The shampoo they used, or didn't use, left him still kind of smelly. I believe they used dull nail clippers. His nails were jagged and splintered when we got him back but we also were able to take care of that at home. Very over priced for the job they did. One of my last resorts for grooming. There are definitely better groomers in the Birmingham area. read more

i'm very disappointed in salon here. this is the second time that i was told an appointment time and the person on the phone put me down for a different appointment time. the first time it was cool because it was later in the day. i could drop them off and i was free, but today i show up at 5pm when the person on the phone actually marked us down for 12. they couldn't see us. normally, if this was my mistake i would admit it; however, my husband was with me when i was on speaker phone with the woman and he heard 5 as well. it really stinks that i will now have to find a new salon (they seem to take pretty good care of the animals) because this place really doesn't get it. but then again, maybe i shouldn't rely on a salon that pays their staff minimum wage to actually care about my dogs or my experience. read more

Bought a pinstripe ball python from here cause he had some really bad stuck shed on him and asked for his feeding chart to get his weight up and they couldn't provide one! Took him back since he wouldn't eat and gave them my number to call me once they got him to eat to establish a schedule. He was there for over a month never ate with them and was constantly told that he hadn't lost any weight and they were going to try to force feed him if it was okay with me and my boyfriend. So we said yes. Well Sunday went back to check on him and he was in a tank in the back with a red heat light on him not moving at all. Looked absolutely horrible. So we bought him back and realized that he was really really malnourished and was severely dehydrated. Last night he died because of this. He didn't look like that the last time we had saw him which was a week ago. I never got told that he had dropped weight or was dehydrated. I just feel like we should have been notified of this and we would have gotten him back sooner to force feed ourselves. Never again will I buy an animal from here. read more

Groomers at Petco seem to "know their stuff" about dogs and the traits of different breeds. They also show concern for individual dogs' needs. I appreciate the way they keep in contact with me when I take my pets in for grooming. Compared to other places, Petco's grooming prices are reasonable. read more

I took my dog into the grooming salon to get groomed and a cleaned up haircut. I came back to a dog with his body shaven, some spots longer than others, his ears very choppy, and his tail and legs still bushy. I would love to know who would think in any way this would look okay and would make a customer happy. read more

As far as the store and the employees I love it. Everyone has always been very helpful and I have been going there since it opened. However, the grooming department is not that great. It is overpriced for the service. There is a girl that has worked there for years, her name is Barbie, she is good. She does not have anything to do with the prices. I have had bad experiences every time she is not working. My dog comes out butchered and still kinda stinky. I wish I could find a better place that is less expensive or at the very least is worth the money I pay. I like to take my dog a few times a year to a professional but I usually do it at home, I can do a better job with my Wahl clippers than the other workers. Again, I can only compliment Barbie's work and none other. AND when I went there yesterday morning, there were 2 girls sitting at the grooming desk. One was on the phone with her credit card company and the other was eating chips. She saw me come in and stuffed a few chips in her mouth and proceeded to talk to me with chips literally spraying on the sheet she was writing my name on. So awkward. I should have left. There is a REASON this place has a 2 star rating. I rarely ever leave reviews. If I have a problem I report it to a manager and handle it myself but this place has really pushed me over the edge today. I made a an appt 2 days ago for 1:00. I arrived at 1:22 due to an issue with one of my children. I sat waiting patiently for 10 minutes only to be turned away for being late. No offer to at least give him a quick trim, no later appt (strange since 2 days ago they had every single time available. Stuff happens. Life is hard and people run a little behind. Good customer service means working it out and helping to meet your customers needs. At least partially. I could understand if I were an hour late. But 22 min? Wait for 10 just to turn me away? I won't be back and neither will anyone I know. Not cool Petco. Big businesses like this need to go away. I knew better than to go there but the cut was desperately needed and it was a Sunday. I would only recommend this grooming facility to anyone who wants their dog to look like a poodle. I arrived at the groomer, explained that my dog was a Husky mix. My dog has long thick hair that requires some proper skill in managing correct length, etc. As I was explaining to the groomer, I noticed three other dogs that at first glance looked very similar and I specifically said "I don't want my dog to look like them". Apparently that statement didnt sink in very well. The groomer explained that they would start off at the lowest length and make sure that the hair could be cut correctly and then move to the next shorter length setting in the event that the first setting wasn't cutting enough. Little did I know that they would cut so low to only leave about 1/4 inch. Who the hell does that to a Husky?!? They should actually be sheering sheep instead of grooming dogs! They completely destroyed my dog and also had uneven cutting around the neck and along the back. My Husky was now a large poodle! The only thing nice I will say is that they were very courteous when I brought my dog in. When I picked him up later that day, I was so stunned I couldn't even get the words out to express my anger. When I arrived home, my wife was furious and I felt horrible. My dog is fine, but I would never go there again because they are completely improperly trainend in proper grooming technique.
