I booked an appointment at Petal a few weeks in advance for a wedding as a guest. It was my first time visiting this salon. My appointment was with the stylist, Jade.
Upon arriving for my scheduled appointment, I noticed an A-frame sign outside advertising a $10 walk-in special for hair and nail services. Seeing such a significant price gap makes a client who planned ahead and booked at full price feel penalized for being responsible. Without a clear, elevated upgrade or value add reserved for appointment holders, first time customer discount.... the price difference feels arbitrary. Walk-in promotions naturally focus on high volume and quick turnover. When I presented a photo of my desired updo, my stylist was very honest and gracious about her skill set and checked if any colleagues were available to assist, unfortunately, none were. While I appreciated her transparency, the inability to accommodate a standard service alongside the deep walk in discount made the overall experience feel disappointing and poorly balanced for paying clients.
On social media, the salon highlights an exceptionally thoughtful client experience, emphasizing small comfort details like stocking feminine care products and even Midol in the restrooms. That attention to detail was what led me to request a warm tea or mint tea when offered a beverage, as I was dealing with a mild stomach ache. Unfortunately, the receptionist reacted with a visible facial expression before offering a small plastic bottle of water (.5 pint), despite a kettle and coffee machine sitting just a few feet away on a table. While offering drinks is a nice touch and completely optional, the interaction felt unwelcoming and out of alignment with the warm hospitality advertised online.
The service was efficient, finishing in under an hour, and the styling in the back was lovely, almost resembling delicate roses. I had agreed to a portfolio look the stylist showed me, but in hindsight, it didn't complement the overall vision for my dress as well as I had hoped. Given the salon's glowing reviews, I assumed they would work their magic and didn't follow up as persistently as I normally would after struggling to get past the automated phone system. The AI system was convenient for logging a quick three minute delay due to traffic, but direct pre-appointment communication remains a challenge.
A huge shoutout to Jade, who is so incredibly talented, gentle, and sweet. You can truly tell she has the heart of an angel! She consistently checked in for my opinion and was more than willing to adjust or update anything to make sure I was happy. I loved her transparency, and my style held up perfectly for the entire event.
One suggestion for the management team would be to curate a dedicated lookbook or organized portfolio highlight for each stylist....whether on the website, booking platform, or a tablet in salon. I would prefer ahead of time as customers are planning for their style. While the salon's social media showcases great work and active hiring posts for events, having a reference of each individual stylist's portfolio would be immensely helpful. Featuring diverse work across all team members would make it much easier for clients to choose a stylist whose specific aesthetic matches their vision. read more
