When I bit down on a piece of metal that had made its way into my "employee lunch," and cracked a molar in half, I took it as a sign of things to come. A couple of weeks later, I was let go and escorted from the building. I didn't mind that part so much. It made me feel like some kind of super-villain. In the end, though, I still had this busted tooth. Over the course of the next couple of years, the tooth would abscess, get infected, swell, etc... As one of the uninsured millions, I did my best to find antibiotics, pain-meds, and the like the only way I knew how. I even lanced the thing a couple of times on my own. When it acted up most recently, I had finally had enough. You can't make money waiting tables when your entire head is throbbing and you want to attack everything with a pulse that manages to hove into your personal space. Fortune smiled upon me, though, as one of my tables during a lunch shift just happened to be a group of dentists. Not only were they a great group of people (service industry approved, that is,) they made conversation with me. When my tooth pain inevitably came up, they dispatched with the embarrassment I felt from being uninsured and poor in about thirty seconds and invited me to have it looked at in their office. The Northland Family Dentistry group operates out of an unassuming office in a strip mall just off North Oak Trafficway. It's an old-fashioned place. No computer screens around the place. No mouth cameras. Just a dentist chair and some confident, friendly, and funny workers who do their job quickly and capably. Within a week of my first visit, my mouth was examined, x-rays were taken, and operated on. The tooth pain is finally gone, and at a price I could afford. I'm a little ashamed I waited so long to get it handled, but like a lot of you, I'd rather deal with the pain than put myself in a dentist's chair. These guys made it really easy on me, and fixed my problems just as they'd promised. I could not have been more satisfied with my experience. I first purchased a groupon to North Oak Family Dental Care for zoom whitening. I hadn't had a checkup in a few years so they asked me to have a checkup done before whitening from there or elsewhere. Having moved from California, I did not have an established dentist in KC, so I went to them for my check up and the zoom whitening and I have really had a great experience there. All the ladies in the office are very personable and friendly. Their only drawback is that their office hours are pretty limited. Mon, Wed & Thurs 8-5 and closed on Tues, Fri, Sat, Sun. They have another office, Westwood Dental, which is open Mon-Thurs 7-5, and Fri 9-1. With that being said, I ended up getting a veneer done by them and while I was waiting the two weeks for my permanent to be made, it popped off twice (very common with the type I was having done). Both times, someone came in outside of business hours to rebond it for me at no extra cost and made feel like it was no big deal they came in on their day off I will definitely be going back to them and I now feel great about my smile!." ...I forgot to mention that I went to a lab in KCK to get the color of my teeth matched to create the permanent veneer. I was told this was the best lab in town. At first I was not sure. You go down to a sketchy looking basement to meet with a technician. The facility looks like a high school chemistry lab from the 80's. The woman recorded about 4 different colors she would use to create my porcelain match. She really did do an amazing job! With such a perfect color match, even I forget that I have a veneer.

While I was always impressed and felt at home with the dentists and hygienists at this office, the front desk staff ruined my experience and trust in this business. First off, for understandable reasons, my appointment for a regular cleaning was canceled 3 times the night before or day of, when I requested and took time off work each time--once for a snow day, another for a sick hygienist, and the 3rd time the suction wasn't working in the office. I understand things come up and can't always be avoided, but it's difficult when you're a professional with limited time off and you take days for nothing. I did cancel three appointments as well, all for valid reasons--fever/covid, had to put down sick pet at the vet, and my grandma who was in hospice care died the day of. I called and canceled my appointment, right after finding out my grandma was almost gone and I wanted to get to her house before she passed. The receptionist who answered (sorry, don't remember name) was extremely rude and disrespectful. She said "Sure...and last time it was a dying pet." with no trace of empathy or understanding in her tone. I was appalled. She then continued to argue, saying they'd no longer be able to schedule me. I asked if Dr. Perriman could call me back to chat about the situation and the way I was being treated, and she yelled over the phone that "this was coming from the dentist." I've never been berated over the phone like that or interacted with someone as mean and disrespectful as this person was--let alone a client-facing professional. Within 1 minute of hanging up, I received a $50 payment link for a late cancellation. I understand this is normal for late cancellations and paid the fee. I just wish there was an ounce of empathy, understanding, and good customer service from this woman. After requesting a call from Dr. Perriman, I did have a positive phone call with a different front office receptionist. She was very respectful, understanding, and apologized for the mistreatment I'd received. I wish I remembered her name, so she'd receive her well-deserved recognition. They put me on the schedule, but I couldn't get past the mistreatment, disrespect, and hatred I received from the previous receptionist. I read some online reviews and found another local dentist that has staff who treat their patients with respect and dignity. I hope Dr. Perriman sees this review and conducts some performance reviews to ensure other patients are treated with more kindness and respect than I was. It seems like there have unfortunately been a good number of negative experiences/reviews for this practice recently. I hope they get things together, because the dentist and hygienists I interacted with were great. It's unfortunate to have an office staff member running your clients off.

Then the staff greets you and begins working their magic by making you feel comfortable and welcome. Kind of like home, offering a variety of drinks (peanut butter or smores hot chocolate, water, soda, coffee etc). Everyone is smiling and seems to have your best interests at heart. Equipment is newer and latest technology. And Dr Oz couldn't be more accommodating and patient with his explanations and insight of procedures. Very thorough and knowledgeable as is his chair side staff. Can't think of one area where this office comes up short.
