I absolutely love Dr. Dunaway. We never have to worry, as our cats were always provided with the best care. Dr. Dunaway is very attentive and she provides the best and most cost effective recommendations. She listens and is very patient with us and our pets. So we are always able to get what we need in one place. She cared for Frank ( our Orange Tabby cat) for several years until he passed away last year. She also cared for our Tortoiseshell girl, Chipmunk, through numerous health issues until she passed away a few days ago. Our cat had health issues when we got her, and Dr. Dunaway was able to nurse her back to health, and both of our pets lived long lives. We knew that wouldn't have been possible without Dr. Dunaway and her staff. The staff remembers the families by name, and they sent us cards when our pets passed away. The hospital is also open on Saturdays, which is very helpful for weekend emergencies. I like this place because it is one of the few places that grooms cats. Tiffany is an amazing groomer, and she was always patient with our pets. The pricing for grooming is also reasonable. If you consider taking your pet here, I highly recommend Dr. Dunaway, as she is wonderful.

If I could give 6 stars, I would. I've had nothing great experiences with this vet!!!…read more Here is my most recent story: I took my sweet little older pup in for a groom last week (3/16/21) and was called 30 minutes later by the groomer who told me they found a lump while expressing his anal glands (normal procedure for a full groom for those of you who may be unfamiliar). They asked if I wanted him to be seen by the vet and I agreed. The vet (Dr Daniels) confirmed my pup had a cancerous tumor (later confirmed to be malignant). I spoke with Dr Daniels several times and he was very honest and open and PATIENT with me. My dog is my only "child" and I know NOTHING about cancer (except that it REALLY sucks) so I was terrified. We scheduled surgery right away and he was seen the following Monday. Dr Daniels was amazing. He called me before surgery and again after surgery and when he started to wake up and again when he was standing and fully awake. He eased so much of my anxiety. When I went to pick up my pup, Dr Daniels sat in a room with me to go over everything again and answer question (questions I didn't even think to ask!). My pup is doing well now and is on his way to recovery. Dr Daniels also called me very early the next morning to check on Brodie to make sure all was well overnight (THIS was that moment I realized he was really going above and beyond...and the moment I told myself I needed the world to know how amazing my experience has been). I'll take my dog in for a check up next week and then he will have his stitches removed a few days later. I'm so very glad that I started taking him to Nall Daniels and SO glad I took him there to be groomed as this tumor was TINY and could have easily been missed by someone else. We caught it early thanks to the amazing staff at Nall Daniels.

I chose this…read moreclinic because they were listed as a veterinary clinic who would direct file the pet insurance that we just purchased. This was the first red flag. They do not do this. I also came in with my first free visit coupon and as soon as I brought it up I was hit with a HARD sales pitch for their puppy club. DO NOT fall for this scam. You will be told that it covers everything for only &66 a month for a 12 month contract. Well....not so fast. Turns out the little pup has an ear infection. So to clean his ears and prescribe 2 ear meds it was an additional $240. They didn't exam the puppy in front of me-another red flag. I had to wait 40 minutes to get back and got to chat with another client. I asked her if she liked the vet and she said "there is a large amount of turnover" After being at the clinic for 2 hours-I came out to over hear a conversation from another client who was clearly angry about the puppy club as she was being charged after she canceled. I was told yesterday that I had 24 hours to cancel. I called today way before 24 hous and was told they would cancel the membership. 4 hours later I was hit with another charge. I called and was told only 1/2 charges would be credit back as I forfeited my free visit when I signed up for the scam. By the way...the total for the 8 week puppy visit was $419.76 There are so many family owned wonderful vets in Birmingham. Run as fast as you can. Finally-they charge $100 for a routine office visit. That is by far the highest rate in Birmingham They charged $120 for the ear medicine. You can get it for $25 on Amazon. Consider this post a blessing

When we brought her home she had so much matted hair that her body was a different shape and she had a obvious skin infection. They clearly didn't take care of her. In addition, they charged us an adoption fee that included getting her fixed. They opened her up and they advised us that she had already been spayed. Weeks later she started bleeding. We took her to our normal vet and they found that she'd never been fixed so we had to pay for another surgery and she had to go through all of that again. We called and emailed the clinic to let them know of their mistake and never got a response back. Our regular vet told us that we should report Vulcan Animal Clinic to State Veterinary Board as they were clearly neglecting the dog while she was in their care and they showed gross incompetence when it came to the surgery. We will be doing this. I cannot recommend avoiding this place enough! If I could give it a 0 star rating I would.

Both dogs had a vaccine resistant kennel cough and had not been treated for it, one dog had pneumonia. I chose this place because it had a veterinary clinic attached and was assured my pets would be seen if needed. This definitely was not the case. I spent 3X the amount I spent on boarding trying to save my dogs from what they caught at this facility. The vet at the emergency care mentioned the volume of animals at the facility was probably a contributing factor. Never again! Don't be fooled by this new and modern looking place.

That means it is very hard to deal with at a Vet office. The owner met me one day and said, "Bring Otis in during your walk. We will give him treats and he can get familiar with our place. I did just that, and Otis started to take me to the front door so he could see his new friends (unbelievable) and get treats. This morning, I took Otis in for an actual visit with the Vet. A vet assistant was educated in these kinds of dogs. She educated me, gave me some sedatives for the next visit and explained that these small bullies are simply like this sometimes. Otis got a shot for the flu (I highly recommend) stool sample, heart and teeth checked. He also got a q-tip in the ear. I had to hold him tight, but it was fine. The staff showed calm professionalism. The facility is pristine, and the parking is plentiful. They have day care, VIP Day care and boarding. Amazing place and so nice for us. I highly recommend.

They seldom call you back when they are supposed to (to let you know your pet or medications is/are ready for pick-up), and trying to get one of the veterinarians to call you back is next to impossible (unless you keep on top of the staff). On top of that many of them lack simple customer service etiquette when it comes to dealing with the public (and are frequently rude over the phone). We recently dropped one of our dogs off to be looked at, only to have her catch kennel cough (and spread it to our other, older dog). When we mentioned this to the vet, we were told, "Yes, we had a dog in our kennels that was infected the day you dropped off your dog, and she was exposed to it." When we asked why we were not informed before dropping her off or told afterward that she had been exposed, the front desk worker got irritable and defensive, saying it wasn't the vet's fault (all they had to do was tell us they had a case of it and we would have asked for an in-car visit instead). Overall the quality of Alford Avenue Veterinary Hospital has gone downhill of late, and I think the main reason for this is the support staff. We have decided to move our dogs to another veterinary clinic for treatment (and we got attitude from the veterinarian at Alford Avenue when we told her the reason for our decision to go to a different vet). We will not be returning.
