Our Maltese
Tara H.

I studied Yelp two years ago just before Hurricane Irma was going to possibly hit this area and sent my family in Sarasota to this store to buy one of the LAST crates for sale in town! Since then we have become steadfast loyal customers because of their MARVELOUS selection of more refined manufacturers of top quality ingredient pet food and gracious friendly HELPFUL staff! Love the quaintness of the shop- - crystal hanging decorations, sweet " kitschy" items to decorate, but most of all the rare selection of food categories: super high protein/ grain free/ grain inclusive/ low calorie/ Stella and Chewy, etc. And the largest selection in Sarasota under one roof at the BEST prices!! With a father who was a prof of biochemistry 40 years in the Bronx at Einstein Med, I research pet food carefully. Recently we were lucky to find a true scientist- veterinarian, Dr Nelson in Osprey a grad of Ohio State Vet School years ago when women were pioneers. Sunday I studied pet food ingredients online, then questioned Dr Nelson. As a result I will do part grain free ( canned) part grain inclusive ( dried) seek limited ingredients- preservatives- additives, and aim for high protein and good natural fat ( salmon. Tuna omega 3). Some grains, Dr Nelson told me, are good for effective digestion and amino acids like Taurine, are also good. She took the cat off dried food ( " it is heavy in carbs" ) because of her sudden weight gain. The folks at Pet Supply Center are VERY busy but extremely accommodating/ understanding of finicky pets and our OVERWHELMING job of hunting for healthy food that pets WILL EAT! Any unopened cans they dislike you may return WITH receipt! So far our Maltese loves Weruva and Pure Vita Salmon, and the cat loves Weruva ( grain free), Hills( grain inclusive), and Chicken Soup ( grain inclusive). I will try Hills canned for the dog next. Along with this I will give them a little Purina pro plan top dried food " savor" with freeze dried pieces of salmon, steamed fresh veggies, cottage cheese, cooked egg whites and sardines. Rotating their foods around perks their appetite. Petguard (at food Coops) is almost organic with vegetables which Dr Nelson said is good for them ( except beans). Dr Nelson likes Royal Canine (but my pets don't!), Hills and Blue Buffalo for their combo of ingredients = " balanced" but has no experience with the new " boutique" brands. Our Maltese breeder, Lee Albritton of Ocala who shows her dogs year round ( once at Westminster), loves to give her dogs, Home made ( professional drier) dried fresh liver in thin strips, steamed carrots/string beans, cottage cheese, canned sardines ( lower salt), raw cut up chicken neck bones ( I special order at Publix/ come and leave them frozen in my frig/ defrost one at a time with cello in frig/ rinse then he eats RAW in 1-2 days after defrosted ) and Stella dry food and raw frozen Instinct big chicken patties ( these he liked for months but suddenly now dislikes $$). Dr Nelson did not like the raw chicken neck bones because of salmonella risk and raw pet food. I still give him the chicken frozen necks occasionally. All my life I have carefully selected healthy delicious food for my daughters and husband. Now I do it for our beloved pets! Enjoy!

Yuri, Goober and Pookie just can't wait for treats from Pet Supply Center.

I love going here for several reasons, it's close to just about everywhere, the staff is knowledgeable about the animals, prices are very good and they are friendly. Oh, and Betsy is an awesome greeter! I am recognized when I come in and made to feel as if this is really my store. There are a lot of goodies, but I always have to reign in the temptation to spoil my cats, which you can do very nicely there. Thank you for all the years of good, friendly neighborhood service.

Lots of good stuff here. My doggie loves to visit. BUT the checkout process dates back to the 1800's. Be prepared to wait in line.

I called a day before and Andrew was kind enough to accommodate a grooming the next t day. I drove an hour to get to the shop and explained what we wanted especially for her face. I wanted a teddy bear cut look which is a more rounder cute shape leaving more hair around the face but maybe they don't know what that is? You would think they'd know being a grooming shop for so long. Even though our dog had a little matting under her throat area it wasn't for them to shave it all the way up and the sides of her face. I was left very disappointed and can't wait for her hair to grow out. I also noticed her skin very red on neck area. I appreciate that Andrew was nice and got down to our dogs level making her feel somewhat comfortable because she does get nervous I just wished he would had listened to my request and followed through. I don't even know who really cut our dogs hair because he said there are lady groomers in the back. Pics show when I got her groomed back in March of this year (look/shape on the face I wanted) compared to the narrow looking shape they gave her so sad. And the thing is I SHOWED him the pictures of her beforehand.

Petco in Sarasota continues to exceed expectations with both service and accessibility--something…read morethat truly matters to those of us caring for working service dogs. From the moment you walk in, the staff is consistently friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to help without being overbearing. Whether I'm doing a quick kitty litter refill or stocking up for multiple medical alert service dogs, they make the process seamless and efficient. What really stands out is their thoughtful product selection. They carry durable, safe toys that can actually withstand the demands of highly trained working dogs--not just your average pet. The pool frisbees are a favorite for enrichment and exercise, especially here in Florida, and it's clear they prioritize quality and safety in what they stock. Accessibility is another huge win. The store layout is easy to navigate, even when managing multiple dogs, and the team is accommodating and respectful of service animals--something that is not always a given elsewhere. If you're a pet owner, trainer, or handler of service animals, this Petco location is a reliable, well-run resource. It's more than a pet store--it's a support system for those of us who rely on our animals every single day. Highly recommend. Sandra LaFlamme

Sadly, purchasing our two (yes, two) babies from Petland has been my biggest financial regret. I…read moreshould have listened to the rumors and reputations about pet stores, but the staff was so kind and helpful, I just couldn't imagine I would have a bad experience AFTER going home. I definitely feel like I was taken for a fool. My sweet little Maltese wasn't responding during my training, so I began to question her hearing. After speaking to our vet, she determined that she could be deaf. So I contacted the Petland Warranty number and they insisted that I send them proof from an official (and expensive) BAER hearing test. Sure enough, she is deaf. For the last two months I have been battling back and forth to try to get some sort of compensation for her, knowing she will need special training. What I ALSO have encountered (after owning many dogs in my lifetime) is that both of my sweet babies (a Brussels Griffon also), peed and pooped in their cages where they sleep! AND eat their poop!! When I told my vet, the first thing she asked is if they came from a pet store. Apparently she sees that all the time, so I was embarrassed to say yes. They all looked at me like "whelp, you should have known not to buy from a pet store!" I also have to UNDO the bad potty training habits that the puppies learned living in a box with other dogs. Petland offered me 25% refund, 50% store credit, or another dog. Really? I'm not going to just give her back. She's not a pair of shoes! Of course I'm going to keep her and give her the home she needs. I asked for 50% refund or 75% store credit but was rejected both times. They threw in a vibrating collar (that I already had to buy). As of today, we are still back and forth in this debate. Such a shame. Petland and pet stores in general have gained another enemy and extremely unhappy customer. From now on I will advocate for rescues or working directly with a breeder. Petland just doesn't seem to care about doing things right and I am SO disappointed in myself for trusting them. PLEASE I BEG YOU don't buy from this store. At the very least, make sure you read the fine print clearly and don't glaze over the warranty. Do you research and learn how they care for them. It seems as though everyone is right. They are a glorified puppy mill and KNOW people will sacrifice their budget for the cute puppies in the window. And if there is a problem, they don't do right by you OR the puppies. They still protect their bottom line. I 100% DO NOT AND WILL NOT EVER RECOMMEND this store. The employees may be nice, but in reality, you (and those sweet babies) are just a profit.

Ethically Purchase Your New Wet Pet…read more When I decided that I wanted to get a betta, I knew I wanted to get one from a local aquatics shop instead of from a big box pet store. It's more responsible & ethical, you're shopping locally, and you won't be getting a sick fish. I stumbled upon Wet Pets, and all the reviews raved about how knowledgeable Danny is. We found a beautiful betta swimming in a tank with other fish. He was super social and looked so healthy & happy. I got him the best betta starter tank Danny had. It's been a few weeks, and I think this is the happiest and most social little beta I have ever seen. We thought there would be some rocks & plants inside - but that's no biggie. He just had to wait one more day for his "furniture." Danny did say that if there ended up not being rocks in there that we can come back and he'd take care of us, but we ended up wanting a particularly funky set up haha. The only downsides are that the shop is very small & humid inside and it can get quite busy, which is frustrating if you have questions but need to wait a while for help - but that shouldn't impact my review since that's kind of expected with a small local fish store. Just know, you may need to be patient. Overall, Wet Pets is a great local business with a very knowledgeable owner. I highly recommend stopping in for all your wet pet needs if you'd like to support local business, ethical treatment of fish, and to be sure you get healthy fish
