I can't give enough praise to this store! I feel so welcome every time I shop here. The employees are cheerful and go out of their way to make my visit as easy as possible. The grooming department is especially wonderful. I have a labradoodle whose coat gets matted very easily. Most groomers jump to shaving his coat the second they encounter a knot, but the bather Hana takes a long time to really brush out his coat so I can keep him long and not have to shave him. You can't find this kind of patience anywhere else. Don't change PSP! read more

This must be a me issue bc so many reviews are great (except about feeding animals some live critters which is not something I am at all familiar with and find somewhat amusing but that is a side point lol). I was reco'ed this place in 5 points for dog grooming. Prices are insanely cheap. Drop off was ok - but this one woman kept holding the door open to the grooming drop off and two dogs got out - luckily they listened to their owner and came right back but when this woman did it a second time I was like what the heck and wondered why staff didn't tell her to stop it and shut the door. However, Pet Supplies cannot control this ladies stupidity. My girl is a street rescue from NM who ended up in a kill shelter. Then the shelter realized she was pregnant and another shelter rescued her. She had 9 puppies, nursed them, shelter adopted the pups out, spayed her and put her up to find her family (me) which took two months. Bc of that, she has insane separation anxiety (we are working on it). There was a ton of barking and crying and I remarked to the ladies working about that and they said they were xtra busy. I said my dog (whom I have only had since late April) is scared of that kind of noise bc it reminders her of the shelter and it can freak her out - they told me everything would be chill, most dogs were getting picked up soon. I didn't want to seem like some psycho - although this review my do me in in the sanity space - and so I said ok, bye and waited for their call. When they called me for pickup, I asked how she did and they said she pooped her crate - she has never peed, pooped in any crate, inside or anywhere while in the shelter, with the foster or with me - I am convinced she was totally freaking out and thinking back, seeing the hair all over the grooming room floor, the harnesses that were partially chewed thru (one pink one comes to mind) and the yelps and cries got me thinking...but we will come back to that. Upon checkout, the ladies were nice but one handed me her harness and said "I can't figure these out so here" and she was also eating which was wicked gross in that setting. They had tied a bandana around her neck. Got her home and poor thing collapsed. Went to go on a walk after her dinner, took bandana off and no collar. Her collar has a Road ID name tag with her name, address, vet and my phone number. I called them up and they put me thru to a manager who said "Does it have purple polka dots?" and I said yes, and why wouldn't someone have called me to say it was left behind? That's just lazy. Anyways, I picked it up and was going to nicely say to the manager that she could have called me, and was going to ask how many dogs they typically groom just so I would know if I should cool my jets. When I asked the man at the register for her he said she wasn't available - even tho she told me to ask for her at the office - what? That's what's miffed me frankly. I know I sound like a crazy dog lady but it's just simple service and yes, I do care about my girl and want her to have the best life coming from the streets and having such a big litter. She deserves to be loved and cared for, and just from every interaction I had here, I didn't sense that. Maybe prices here are low for a reason. I'll go elsewhere. read more

An all around great experience! From the phone call to the visit following! Didn't plan to get our elder dogs nails trimmed but the groomers were more than happy to do it. Handled our dog with ease & assurance. Clipped his nails better than we've experienced in 13 years of his life! Super impressed. Then the self serve bathing room was exactly what we needed to get our dog clean. They had everything provided that you would need to complete the bathing. Staff was helpful & attentive! So many dog toys and treats to pick from. They even had Halloween costumes for dogs. .... No. I didn't torture my poor dog with one. He has a Halloween bandana to wear. This is a fantastic pet supply store here in Columbia. It's a chain but they sure have everything you could need. Fantastic selection of premium dog and cat foods - larger selection than anywhere else I have seen. Sale prices are well marked and good. Staff is friendly and plenty of parking. The one problem with the store is that they are selling live feeder rats. Live feeding is cruel to the rat and dangerous to the pet. It doesn't have to be either of these things and provides no benefit to your pet. I would like to see Pet Supplies Plus end the support of this cruel practice. I would have given them 4 stars a couple of months ago. I do have to repor though the indifferent reaction that I have received since then from the same people who not long before strived to give me the best service within their reach. I have been a loyal customer for years and haven't spent just a few bucks since my dog requires raw exotic protein feed. And the best, and most expensive brands, as you can imagine. I have to recognize people like Thomas who showed me always a special desire to help, even in times when the shortages were an issue. This last time, it was a conversation with Sheila that turned me completely off, she acted indifferent, curt, her final answer to my question told me she just didn't care. I asked her if she was dropping me as a customer, seeing that she was not making any effort to show that she was at least willing to work to find a solution to my problem. She said yes, I couldn't be her customer anymore . I have discovered many wonderful big stores through these difficult times for people who feed raw of the best quality to their poochs. Petpeople in Charlotte, Lazy Creek in Lexington. I disagree that PSP is the best. You know the best when troubleshooting, not when everything is easy and you are just a line of quick income to their cash. read more

I prefer to go to the one in West Columbia since the sales tax is a bit cheaper than within City of Columbia limits, but sometimes the closeness of this one to my work wins out. Zero stars Complete waste of time when trying to buy fish. Associates are condescending at best and totally clueless at worse. They will try to tell how to run your aquarium when I have run a successful 5, 10, 20 gallons aquariums for almost 5 years. I couldn't get a replacement to a fish that died of temperature shock (water change) because the water test was "a little high in nitrates" even though I explained that nitrates exist in fully stocked planted aquariums and I perform water changes weekly...I felt they were telling me I was intentionally killing fish for the pleasure of it. Then they looked totally confused after they tested the water and more confused after I asked them to explain the water test. Then the associate said he didn't know about fish. Later, I called the manager on the phone she clarified everything but I still was not able to buy another fish. I never had this experience with any pet store before, I will not be returning! read more

When I say I have to go buy something for my dogs, this is the place where I am going, and it's been that way for years because it's just the very best place. It's so nicely organized, the prices are waaaaaaaaaay better than any other pet supply joint I've tried, and let me tell you, they have such a groovy and helpful staff. If I didn't already have a great job, I'd want to work there. It would be like a non-stop dog parade, which is how I conceive of heaven. They have a really top-notch selection of dog food(!), treats, equipment and all the rest. I always buy my dogs' food, supplements, collars, shampoos, ID tags and etc., at Pet Supplies Plus. I haven't washed my dogs there, because they're small, so I just wash them in the bath tub at home, but I've heard great things about their dog washing place in the back. I have only shopped here for dog stuff because I choose to live with dogs exclusively, but they have sections for all kinds of other pets, too. One time, I got to see them feed a mouse to a snake, which was so cool! The other best thing about Pet Supplies Plus is their rewards program. If you plan to go more than once or twice, sign up for the rewards card! You get good discounts with it, so it's worth the time to fill out the form. Then, go online and make sure you're all signed up for their emails, too, because they send out a $5 off coupon at least once a month. Oh, and when you sign up for the rewards card, make sure you enter your pets' birthdays--you'll get happy birthday coupons ($5 off!) for each date, like clockwork. They used to send out a post card addressed to the pet, and it always made me giggle. Now, they do it via email, but they still put the pet's name on it, which is fun. read more

The customer service here is amazing. I have been shopping here for years and every time I walk in the door there is someone willing to help no matter how many customers they have in the store. The one time that they weren't 100% sure on how to answer my question (about getting a replacement part for a filter as opposed to having to spend $50 on a new one) they left a note for a manager who called me back first thing the next morning. I am visiting relatives in Five Points over the holidays and I had to get my dog some food. I shop at Pet Smart in my hometown almost exclusively, so I reasoned the one here would be just as good. Was I ever wrong. I walked around and I loved the store, the prices were right, but I couldnt help overhear this women yelling throughout the store to another employee. The way she was talking to this person was rude and very unprofessional. On the way out I asked the cashier who that person was. She said a manager named Melissa. That she did things like that all the time. I am in management myself. I did not like how she handled the situation with the employee. If I was upper management over that store, I would have never hired someone like her. It was embarassing for me to witness, as I am sure it was for the employee. She should have taken the person aside to speak to her. Sorry I give 5 stars for the store but 1 star for the professionalism. read more

The Grooming Salon is the best in Columbia, SC! From the moment you walk in you and your animals feel at home. It is small, and quiet, which is relaxing for my dogs...and Kaiti and Christy are the most wonderful and animal-loving professionals. Both of my golden retrievers had "grooming anxiety" until I started coming to Kaiti and Christy. Not only do Christy and Kaiti have a gently and loving manner with my dogs, they are superb and extremely proficient groomers. My dogs always look perfect when I pick them up. They have been especially careful and gentle with my baby puppy shih tsu, so that she always has a positive experience. I give them both an A+++++! This place is crazy close to our house, and they carry Blue Buffalo... the food we feed our dog... those two points, alone, earn it high marks for me! Also, the staff has been super accommodating and great at answering our questions in 98% of the cases (I think they thought we were joking in the 2% situation)... all in all, reasonably priced, really accessible, has what we are looking for and helps us find what they don't have... great! read more

Took our three dogs here for a good bath before a big party. Specifically asked to have the big one's coat blown out bc he sheds A LOT. Four hours later we picked them up...they were all wet still and they couldn't cut the nails of one (eve though he has never had any issue ever before). They had clearly just given them a quick bath (as I could have done myself in the backyard) and then stuck them in a crate dryer for hours. They clearly had not had their coats blown out (again they weren't even dry) and hadn't even been brushed. Fur was literally still falling off. This is extra frustrating bc we paid an extra 15 dollars per dog for the extra "spa" treatment. They have tubs where you can bath your dogs yourself...I definitely recommend this...or taking your dog to a real groomer and not Hana at Pet Supply Plus. read more

Great store. Awful groomer. I went in to get my dog groomed for the first time in months. The last time I got her groomed I was unhappy with the result. The groomer had buzzed her hair so short and it was not right for the type of dog she is. So for a couple months I swore off groomers and just cut her at home. I decided this week that I would try a new groomer at Pet Supplies Plus and just be very specific and verbal about what I wanted. So I was sure to say, DO NOT BUZZ HER SHORT. I also pointed to areas an explained exactly what I wanted. I came to pick her up and she looked awful. I specified where I wanted hair to be left longer and where to cut shorter. But when I came to get her... buzzed short, hair way shorter than I had asked all around. I also asked for them to do a sanitary clipping around her private area and it just looks awful. Uneven cut. I asked for them to trim her tail a specific way and it looks untouched. And I know its not my dog misbehaving because I have been successful with other groomers outside of this state who know how it should be done. I am very upset because it will take a while for her beautiful hair to grow out the way it is suppose to look. My dog is not the type you just shave off the hair, she has beautiful flowy hair that the groomer should've know how to cut to make it look less mangy and ragged, especially with my specifications. Never going back to this groomer again. Very upset with how much I just paid for her to look ridiculous and nothing like I had asked. read more

I have been using PSP for about as long as they have been open, and I'm surprised by a couple of the unfortunate reviews. The staff is EXCEPTIONALLY well trained and knowledgable about their products. They never seem to tire of questions about food choices. They are always upbeat and welcome you when you enter the store and someone most always find you in the aisles to see if you need help. (And they leave you alone if you don't). I've written to their headquarters a number of times to tell them how incredibly well run this store is and how great their hiring choices are - one of THE most consistent of any store of any kind in the region. It's always clean, and the staff is so attentive. Rarely ever do I see a tiny slip on service, and if there is, it's minor and simple human error, because systemically they are on top of their game. And they have really great hours as well. My dog loves going there and she approves this message. read more

Disappointed for several years this place has been my one stop shop for my per needs. Having 4 cats with all there needs and a snake that wont eat frozen food (besides most frozen are gutted and skin and bones have no nutrition) but it seems since there been a negitive reiview regarding feeder animals. They have stopped offering them. Odd how the feeder fish are still there. Seems to me feeder animals are all in the same category, -food. the ignorance of others that some amimals thst are keept as pets dont have difrent food needs. And that live food. Is an option. And a more natural one then some frozen gutted skeleton thats been sparyed down wirh chemicals to be "freash" from the freezer. Handling a live rodent is more sanitary then warming up a frozen cadaver checking themp. So nothing frozen will harm your beloved pet. Then hopping that she eat the thing, i know after all that work with a dead rodent in hot water i have. A yucky wet mess nthat i hope my snake will eat. Most of thr timen she Wont eat frozen till she staving and im concerned for her health. But. I Know with the politically correct view of live foods (please ignore the feeder fish) All my business will be elsewhere. Kaiti groomed our 8 month old dog for her first full groom visit.She took her time and followed our suggestions.Our dog looked great.Her second visit was a disaster despite her being familiar with what looked great.She was obviously in a hurry and said she was very busy.We returned to check on our dog after several hours to find groomer sitting in back and were very shocked to hear she was finished hours before expected.We were shocked to see a dog we did not recognize and obviously very unhappy.There were several customers waiting and hoped it was not as bad as it looked so we left the store.Her face,muzzle,and top of body were a mess,no eyebrows,uneven,ears not done,coat on legs,hind quarter,tail looked as though not touched at all and hair stuck together.Called manager when we arrived home,he was courteous and said he would leave instructions for others when we decided path forward.Called store today and no notes according to another manager?We will visit store for refund and hope some of the disaster for us and dog can be corrected by someone who cares enough to do their job well. read more
