Tucked away on Fishamble Street in the west end of Temple Bar, this business had an unassuming front. Until recently, the outside was just painted black and had a barely visible sign. But now, Reptile Haven stands out because of its new green lefty outside decor. The first time I went into this shop my jaw fell to the floor. The sales assistant had a snake dangling from his arm. The snake's teeth were actually clamped to his hand. He seemed rather unfazed by this experience and was trying to coerce the animal to loosen his grip. I guess for him it was just another day's work. Seriously though, the people who work here are professionals. They can offer you advice on what reptile to buy and how to care from them.

In fact, this name was augmented to "Harry 'Houdini' the Hairy Hippy Hamster" after numerous daring escapes he made from his cage. Yep, he was a devious but loveable rogue and I always felt his tiny black eyes belied a great warmth of intelligence trapped in that thumb sized skull. Petland are great, choc-a-block with those cool, colourful twisty hamster pipes and rolling balls to keep all but the most artful of rodents engaged for hours. Indeed, this is a good pet shop by all accounts.

Meerkats, they have real live meerkats!…read more I spent a very happy half hour with junior watching their antics, after which we bought a dog bed, a toy for the cat and explained at great length why we couldn't take a meerkat home. Petworld is huge with a vast array of pets (anything from rabbits to tarantulas) and pet related accessories, worth wandering in to just for a look at the animals if nothing else!

They do manage to cram a lot of pet stuff inside that small place, but they're still limited in what they hold in their shops.
