Lister Drive Fisheries & Pet Centre

Lister Drive Fisheries & Pet Centre

Having felt rather broody lately I have decided to get a pet. I had tried to find Freshfields…read moreAnimal Rescue, as I'd much rather re-home a lonely unloved creature than trade in them, but without the postcode I couldn't find it. So craving something cute and in need of something to do, I set off to Lister Drive. I was surprised at how busy the place was, it is after all just a pet shop, but there was a steady stream of visitors buying and browsing. First stop was the fish pool as my guest had not seen it before. Walking by the old turnstiles into the old baths, It was just like I remember, small tanks surrounding the pool filled with giant koi- they really are huge some estimated to around twenty pounds. This area was quite busy and clearly still a big attraction. Next, on to the aquarium room filled with numerous species of fish: discus, sturgeon, piranha and my favourite, the parrot fish. There's also crabs, terrapins and unusual frogs, they're tiny and a nude flesh colour. Then to the birds! Another huge space with around 8 aviaries:cockatials, canaries, budgies, finches, African grey parrots even hens and I what I thought were quails! All the birds looked really healthy: bright colours, full plumage and chirruping happily despite the rather cold environment. Finally on to the rodents; this section is quite small spatially though the offering is plentiful. There were several rabbits: dwarf, dutch and lop eared, some guinea pigs, hamsters gerbil and mice, a couple of ferrets, some kittens, and even some chipmunks. I could have stayed a lot longer pining for one of those bright eyed bunnies but it was rather claustrophobic and some people younger than myself , though no more demanding, were desperate for a look in. Begrudgingly I acquiesced. There is a dense selection of pet products: food, cages, baskets, aviaries, tanks and toys; the prospect of looking and choosing is almost daunting. It is not as cheap as I remember, though is probably just average. Stood eating sticky ribs and Chinese chicken wings at the till, the staff don't really strike me as professionals I think they just sell the stuff. There is certainly no form of customer evaluation carried out regarding owner competence or the adequacy of home environment (as with Pets at Home and the animal rescue) as a child of a couple of years of age walked out precariously, proudly clutching a bag of goldfish.

I got a kitten from here, and literally didn't have to do anything to get her, no forms, no nothing. They haven't checked on her and I could have easily taken her somewhere where she'd be killed. They also gave poor information about fish when I went to get 6 minnows, they told me to get one at a time, which is false information. As well as this, their aquatics are often labeled incorrectly and the tanks are bare, overstocked and just cruel. The four fish I got from there, pearlscale goldfish, were covered in white spot. One of them has neurological problems (But he is doing well). I have had them for five months now, and the one with neurological problems has not recovered. They also housed many male russian dwarfs together that were fighting rather aggressively. A lot of their supplies are dirty, and look old. Actually, a hamster of mine got a new cage from this store and got sick and died shortly after. I don't know if the new cage was to blame though. I'd give this store 1 star, if its larger fish weren't so well cared for. In the fish room where the koi live, they're massive and they thrive. If you're looking for good fish decorations and food, this is your place. I'd be wary about the smaller fish. The staff vary, some are very rude and know next to nothing about the animals they're selling, others are very polite and seem to care about the animals they're selling. They need to make sure their fish are not sick, or disabled, and ensure that their rodents aren't housed together if they are too old to get along. However, the staff did kindly offer to drive my tank home for me, and carry it up. I think it just needs more maintence and they need to educate all their employees about the lives they are meant to be caring for.
