We had the most fabulous vacation, and I booked through Peru For Less (now: Latin America For Less.) It is a complicated trip, and there were a few bumps, and even though I am giving 5-stars, a 5 hour flight delay from Lima to Cusco did happen. Our contacts were in touch with us, and aware of it. We missed the Cusco city tour, but we had all the tickets to museums, the Cathedral, and Saksaywaman - and went just went self-guided on our last day in Cusco. The only other bump, one of the mules got her foot caught in a rope, and was injured, and the muleteers could not get to us on our first day of the trek. They are animals, this happens, we ended up doing a double-day to make up for that.
I illuminate the negatives first because in reading reviews and TripAdvisor, I see people are skeptical of all the rave reviews of Peru For Less. Don't be. Ryan was great, he coordinated our trip, which included 3 days acclimatizing in Cusco, a fantastic all day tour of the Sacred Valley, including markets, a wonderful lunch, a tour of a silver making shop, a textile tour, and Pisco, Ollantaytamnbo, just a great day. Patricia was a knowledgable tour guide, the other people in the van was all friendly and nice. Ryan also gave me two names of people, (references) whom I friended on Facebook, and they told me about their trips, and gave me tips, and that was helpful.
Our 5-day hike of the Salkantay Trail had the most beautiful natural sights I have ever seen, from snow capped mountains, glacier lakes to cloud forest, jungle, waterfalls and suspension bridges. We saw many animals, banana, and coffee plantations, met with Andean people. And even saw an Andean Condor. Our group was made up of 7 super athletes, marathoners, experienced hikers, and the 13-year old daughter of an Iron Man Triathlete, who kept up like a champ.
The cooks, who also were porters and set up camp, were a joy, cheerful, and talented. We ate like kings. The people, the sights, the Incan ruins, and finally Machu Picchu and the amazing Huayna Picchu climb were the perfect culmination of our efforts. Our guide, Edwin, was at ease with everyone and kept us moving and happy. We took as many breaks as we needed, and they even gave us backpack snacks daily. It's a monster of a physical undertaking (get the altitude sickness pills), and it is A LOT colder the first few days in a tent than you can imagine. But these hardships made it all the more fun when we had the joys of accomplishing 10 hour days.
I wish I was still on the trail. I loved the hotels we booked (4-stars), and the first-class train home, a little luxury on both ends of the trek. I fully recommend this company, and hope to see more of South America, and use them again. As I said, it was a vert complicated trip, with variables of weather, coordinating flights, acclimatizing, meeting up with groups, and it all went really well, much better than I would have imagined, many little extras and details were attended too, such as the pre-trek meetings, which were so helpful, and Edwin coordinating our trains and buses and even organizing a side-trip to hot springs. read more
