From the off, the concert hall has been a miss.
I remember the lavish opening weekend, lights blasted into the sky for many nights. People coming in just to marvel at the design; the doors that make those silly noises as you walk in. It was a lot like cavemen discovering fire, the awe on the locals faces. However, even on the opening night, with a man sitting on a circle of carpet samples making ambient music, everything felt a bit.. well.. pointless.
The concert hall has since gone downhill. Many major events that cater to a great number of people have been cancelled due to low sales and what ends up on stage is either boring or dreadful. Christian rock, yawnworthy jazz bands or the same plays that the Perth Theater has offered for years. It's hardly inspiring stuff.
Yes, the building is well designed and very modern. However, it is soulless and pretentious. It may gain some charm from the passing of time, but for now, it is a very pretty but identityless beast. I don't blame credible acts for not bothering to play when there seems to be no support for anything other than boring pap.
Get some proper promotion teams and book some decent acts, and maybe, just maybe, the concert hall will be more than a very expensive looking box in the city. read more
