From entry to exit we had a wonderful experience. The establishment is clean and well lit, the staff is attentive and provided prompt, friendly service. We started with Samosas that arrived quickly. The crispy pastry shell and creamy filling were amazing and just the right level of spice. The healthy portion of saag paneer is to die for! I chose mild spice level which was perfect for me. Their food is very tasty, but too expensive for what you get. They nickel and dime you and nothing is included with an entree - not even naan bread. I'm all for businesses being successful, but people can drive just a bit further to another Indian restaurant that has a daily buffet for less than an entree at Persis, and everything is included. Sadly, this restaurant is going to struggle because of their competition, and they should strongly consider bringing back their daily lunch specials, which were good and a reasonable price. As travelers passing through Cookeville we happened upon Persis. We were struck instantly when we walked in the front door with a clean, fresh ambiance and a smiling server! Update Returned for lunch. My wife and I decided to order something we would not typically order. She ordered chicken Saag which is creamed spinach with spices and chicken on steamed rice. I ordered fried vegetable fritters (mixed vegetable pakora), coconut soup, and cheese and garlic naan bread. My three were all appetizers. Everything was very good. Service was great. Place is exceptionally clean. We will continue to visit this restaurant. I did ask the server if any of the recipes were Americanized or if they were truly real Indian recipes. He said all recipes were true Indian recipes and that they got all their Indian spices from a Indian store in Nashville which imports them from India. They have been in business for 4 1/2 years. Stopped in for dinner on a recent getaway to the area. Vegetable samosas were an excellent starter. They were spiced perfectly and served with two tasty sauces. The garlic cheese naan was also a delicious winner. I ordered the paneer tiki masala. I would have liked a little more heat, but it was incredible and the portion size was enough for leftovers. They always ask you how hot you want your order and I asked for those green peppers you see me adding to the Dal Tadka on the side. If you like the burn, go for it. Both Dal Tadka and Dal Makhani are like home cooking--mom's comfort food. It's very satisfying and nourishing using a variety of beans and lentils with a lovely aromatic combination of spices and herbs and it is meatless. Very hearty and good for you. Papad is a lentil batter that is baked or fried until crispy, like a chip that you dip in the chutneys. They also have a tamarind chutney, but my favorite is the green one you see in the picture which is I think cilantro and mint. When fresh, it's lovely. Diners sit in rows of dinettes and there is a bar in the back. Lastly, my veggie parkora disappeared rapidly, so you should ask for your own order. read more

AUTHENTIC INDIAN FOOD ALERT One of my coworker's family is from Southern India, she raved about this place being authentic. I finally got a chance to come here for a weekday lunch buffet. Here is my summary of my experience: Pros: Friendly owners (all Indians from southern India), greets you with a smile and get you seated quickly. I love a buffet during work week because if you only have an hour you can dig in the moment you walk in, no need to waste time to decide what to order then wait for your food to come. $13.99 per head is reasonable. Their food is so delicious, everything from butter chicken, chicken masala, tons of vegetarian options, etc. Their biryani rice was flavorful. I LOVE the fact that their nan bread is made to ORDER and no extra charge! This ensures the nan comes out crispy and buttery, it was hot honestly THE best nan I have ever had in a while! Cons: protein option is only chicken, however their weekend lunch buffet is 2 or 3 dollars more but not sure what that includes, it just says special buffet on weekends. The space is rather small, so for a large group it might not work. Their soup was a little too salty and while the food was tasty, If you are not into spicy be careful because this is one of the most spicy Indian buffet I have ever had. This our favorite restaurant in Cookeville. Why you ask? 1. The city of Cookeville is filled with EVERY chain restaurant that has been franchised. Persis is one of the few restaurants here that isn't. 2. The food is awesome and they know their spices. If want heat, they can spice it up. If you want mild, they can do that also. 3. They have Cricket on their TV's. Again the only place in Cookeville, and probably TN, that has this sport on. 4. They have a lunch buffet on certain days which is a great deal. Our family ordered out for my son's birthday. He wanted Thai or Indian. We settled on Indian. My daughter-in-law produced a take out menu and we were off. There were just a few minor details that knocked them down from five stars to four. I'm a fuss-put. We ordered take out and I will comment on the service, the appearance of the place and a breakdown of the food I sampled. The restaurant was neat and spotless. Bravo. One interesting thing happened. I called just as they opened the doors and got the answering message. Guess what? They CALLED BACK! My son was so impressed, he commented that he and his wife need to go there more often. The gentleman who brought out my order and ran my bill was very nice and accommodating. Our big mistake was in ordering appetizers. These were not dainty try these morsels. They were HUGE servings. There was plenty in one APPETIZER to feed two people a meal. But they were good. I tired one nugget of the Chicken Manchurian. It was good, but I didn't dive into out of respect for the person who ordered it. Very interesting thing, though. Three hours after the meal, my adult son, who warmed up 80% of the leftovers came downstairs and asked my wife and I if it was spicy. We both said, "No, uneventful". His comment was that it sure must have marinaded because it was now. My wife ordered the Spinach Pakoda, another monstrous serving. These are deep green fresh spinach fritters. Again, I tried one and found the balance of spinach, spices and batter perfect. Again, we took 80% of it home. One big plus for this dish is that they stayed crispy through out the meal. I could hear my family crunching away all evening. Birthday boy had the Goat Chettadu ordered for him because he asked to be surprised. I ordered the Fish Chettadu out of curiosity. Researching it on my phone, I found it to be a southern Indian dish with a blend of spices I've never encountered before. It was great! The fish was done perfectly, and my son reported the goat was tender. The Naan was, well, naan. Gulab Jamon for desert were good, but mine felt a bit undercooked. And one of the containers leaked a greasy liquid on the way home. That is the end of my complaints. read more

We were in Cookeville for my birthday weekend and decided to visit Persis Grill for lunch. We have a favorite Indian restaurant in Nashville, and Persis definitely gives the Nashville place a run for their money. The samosas were very good. Our entrees were butter chicken for my partner, and lamb vindaloo for me. They were excellent. In fact, the butter chicken from Persis beats out our favorite Nashville restaurant. Wonderful and very gluten-free friendly. We visited yesterday and loved the food (we had chicken tikka kabab and chicken korma). We eat Indian food several times a month and have found a trusted place near our home in the Chicago suburbs. My wife has a gluten sensitivity and gets really sick if a restaurant accidentally "glutens" her. So we were so happy when the owner/manager (?) spent time explaining what items used shared frying oil with gluten items. He even offered to specially fry anything we wanted separately. Instead we ordered two dishes that are gluten-free by nature without special effort. And everything was delicious. I don't know when/if we will be back in Cookeville.
