Perrott's Folly is awesome. It's a massive red brick tower in the middle of Edgbaston, for no sensible reason, and I kind of like that. It was built in 1758 by a guy called John Perrott, but no-one really knows why. Perhaps he just fancied building a massive red tower for fun.
It's an incredible looking tower; standing tall and red over the humdrum residential areas, with its gothic windows and turret-y top. It has been used as an observatory and as part of the University of Birmingham in its long lifetime, and was recently renovated by Birmingham Conservation Trust. However, what it will end up as, again seems to be rather in the air. Again, I really hope that ihis amazing folly doesn't crumble into disrepair - it's one of most striking, and random, features of this part of town. read more
