Power Train - Ashburn

Been going to Power Train since June (so two months now) and it's been one of the best decisions…read moreI've made. In conjunction with a very healthy diet, lots of rest and 64+ ounces of water a day, I've seen significant improvements in my physique, energy levels and overall fitness level. What I like most about the gym itself is that it's very clean (well-maintained), spacious and very well laid out. One of the things that is noticeable upon entering the gym is the absence of the typical "gym smell". Meaning, the flooring and bumpers are either done off-gassing or Power Train has invested in higher quality products that don't off-gas. Also, the ventilation must be exceptional because it doesn't have a musty smell (even though there is plenty of sweat produced there). Whoever designed the layout of the workout areas did us all a favor by allowing for more than adequate space between equipment. The area with the exercise balls is not crammed between the benches, the racks aren't on top of one another, the dumbbell racks aren't in the way, etc. Essentially, moving around the gym is not a hassle and working out on a machine will not, in any way, encroach on other people's space. There are two things I'd improve, if I had to get nit picky: 1) the showers could use some love - there are no outlets in the showers and no fans (i.e. no ventilation). Not a deal-breaker, but not optimal because we're forced to go to the bathroom to use the outlet to plug in a hairdryer, for example. 2) we could use space to hang clothes - there is no place to hang clothes when you are working out, so the only real option is to go to the car to get your clothes after you work out (before you shower) That being said, the best thing about Power Train are the people. Jimmy runs a tight ship with some very motivating and talented personal trainers. In the 45 sessions I've had at Power Train since June, I haven't had a bad workout or one where I left wishing I hadn't gone - they have all been great sessions. Additionally, after two months of moving weight and doing boot camps, not a single injury nor any ligament or tendon pain, which is outstanding. I recommend going to Power Train for anyone who's looking to improve their overall fitness level or get their health back on track. Hands down, probably the best decision I've made in years.

I'm updating my review to add back a star to 4 total. Some improvements I've noticed lately:…read more - More frequent communication on social media and elsewhere digitally to members about happenings at the gym - Equipment repairs and even replacements of things like rope attachments for cables are happening quickly - Cleanliness overall is really good; I almost always see someone cleaning something when I'm there - Staff has been very friendly and helpful I also recently got a second gym membership at Planet Fitness* and have tried out several of their locations in northern Virginia since. And it's very clear what the difference between a ~$20 membership and a ~$60 membership get you. Compared to the 'chain gyms,' TFE is: - Way cleaner and better maintained, especially the locker room - Has a sauna, always a big bonus - Has additional strength training equipment, 1:1 cables, and weights that go up higher for those of us who are more experienced *Three big reasons I sprung for the outside membership: 1) TFE hours are rough sometimes to fit into my schedule especially the weekend hours. 24/7 gym is a necessity for me sometimes, even if I have to settle for a slightly less intense facility. 2) The day passes are so expensive. I imagine I can't be the only person who has a significant other or family member who doesn't live in the area but visits frequently enough to want to come to the gym. My girlfriend lives in Arlington so it'd be crazy for her to pay this gym's membership price to workout on the weekends with me, but it's actually cheaper for me to get a black card at PF than to buy even a couple day passes at TFE. I would recommend to TFE to think up its own version of a black card to allow for unlimited guests, perhaps throw in some massages at the salon inside the facility, etc. 3) It's month-to-month so there's no risk involved to try it. I understand why non-chains can't do this though as they likely rely on the people who sign up and then never come to keep crowds down but stay operational. Overall, TFE is great and you seem to get what you pay for compared to cheaper chain gym options, but I would love better weekend hours and more flexibility in bringing occasional guests as part of the membership.

So, I got recommended by a friend who goes to OTF -- no idea which studio he attends but that's def a talking point imo. FNT (for next time) and all dat. I a new member and been going for a week or two by now. I joined when they had that March promo going on. Promo sux TBH, but workout doesn't so. It's pretty solid / decent actually. One minus, they messed up setting up my profile (adding my HR beats thingy and made a typo on my e-mail which caused there to be a dupe one or something). Also price is a minus, they charge me way too much. Like bro I'm not made of money, I'm just a poor boy trying to lose some fat here. Lastly and a pain point of mine, none of the trainers stop you when you're doing something flagrantly stupid. I'm talking bursting past max heart rate and hovering around 200 BPM, which is dangerous I've recently learned. Now I'm going to take it easy and go 6-8 max on the treadmill, but a bummer as I wish the trainers (or anyone there) would start yelling and maybe slap some sense into you when they see something like that. Anyway, cool story of mine. I hope to stick around, I like losing calories and training weights, trainers are pretty decent, approachable and most are even nice, app is great all around no problems so far. High ten, OTF! Up high! Heck yeah. -- UPDATE (9/25/23): Updating my review to 3-stars because I've struggled with getting along with other members here, and I have yet to make a single acquaintance or friend here. Also, front desk people are not really kind to me and pointedly avoid my eyes at times. There is also something to be said about waitlists for a class. I booked a class last minute bc I was busy with an unavoidable chore, and spent 20 min. driving to the studio. Only to be told "don't procrastinate, book earlier" by head coach here, in response to the fact that the 20 min. drive was a waste of my time (and gas). This response irks me as well as the fact that I decided to "stick it to them" and proceeded to last-minute book the next class more than one hour later at 7pm at the South Riding location, and attended class that day there. Seriously, waitlists at this (the Ashburn) studio are brutal and just the worst. Coaches are uncompromising and never kind to me, and other members largely ignore me as a whole. If I can make at least one acquaintance I can consider bumping up the rating to a 5-star, but honestly I don't see that happening anytime soon, and so the rating sticks and the review stands as it is for now. UPDATE (10/31/23): it's gotten consistently better I feel, still have no friends at OTF and don't really know anyone at the work outs, but there was at least one day where I felt good and everyone was nice to me. Then today, last day of Hell Week -- also Halloween -- I dressed up in costume, and even just two people, the coach and studio manager, commented on it. None of the members did, then again everyone's a stranger so it's hard to build rapport. Anyway, updating my review to 4-star to be fair because I have had a pleasant experience with Ashburn as my home studio so far.

After my consultation with Nicole, I immediately did a trial session and I loved it right away. At first I was hesitant to make a commitment, but I eventually did and got my husband to sign up as well. The workout: It's 20 min. once a week. There are lots of naysayers out there.. but it does work, my husband was skeptical too but now he is a believer. With that little time commitment, how can you say No. That 20 mins however, is probably the most intense 20 min of your week. My results: Of course.. you cannot have a huge body transformation, if you do not get your diet in check.. but I knew that - We love food - the good and bad kinds too. So without dieting or even eating healthier, my results so far: 1. Strong- each week I get stronger and stronger. Very useful for carrying large laundry bins up and down the stairs 2. Endurance and energy- I'm not out of breath after 3 trips up and down the stairs 3. No more pain- I've had on and off upper and lower back aches, pain in my fore arms and elbows.. All supposedly from sitting and typing away. I can't even remember the last time I had these pains. 4. Despite not hitting that BMI chart ... I'm less jiggly! The best part is that despite not having a drastic body transformation, my results have been so positive without sacrificing so much time, I am encouraged to eat healthier and continue on. My husband on the other hand.. In 3 sessions, you clearly see muscle definition and now after 12 weeks..amazing.

When I met Laura Crump Anderson she mentioned to me that she was a personal trainer at Inform…read moreFitness Leesburg. She gave me her card and offered a free mini-session anytime. I thought to myself, "Are personal trainers worth the price?" My exercise history has included many methods either for fun or to lose weight and stay fit, but I had never paid for a one-on-one training session. Most recently, I had been running several times a week, but osteoarthritis in my foot led to surgery and now running is no longer a good option for me. I was reluctant to believe that only one 30 minute workout each week would change my body in a visible and measurable way and I was equally unsure if I could find a way to fit this expense into my monthly budget. I was commuting almost two hours a day and the thought of getting up at some ridiculously early time to do a workout at home or in the gym was not appealing at all. I decided I could exchange some discretionary expenses to cover the cost of a personal trainer and give the program three months to see if it was right for me. In January 2016 I started weekly sessions with Laura. I knew that the first couple months would be a slow start and I had to be patient to see results. By the time March came along, I could tell my clothes were fitting better and my husband even mentioned my muscle tone was more defined. The weekly workout was convenient and easy to manage around the rest of my life. Continuing with the sessions was an easy decision for me to make. Through the rest of 2016, I continued to increase my strength and tone of my muscles and I knew that I was on the right track. However, I still had some extra weight that would not come off without a serious change in my diet. January 2017 I changed my diet, reducing carbs and sugars while increasing vegetables and proteins. I also completed a Metagenics 28 day detox which I obtained through Inform Fitness. I have dropped over 20 pounds in four months. Now the muscle definition that is there from my weekly workouts is even more visible and my body is in the best condition and health it has been in since my early 20's. I'm not just skinny; but toned, strong and healthy. I cannot stress enough that this method works to strengthen and tone your muscles, but you also need to adjust your diet if you are looking to lose weight. The reason why I like working with Laura is her ability to communicate and motivate me and her knowledge of exercise physiology. That may sound simple but it really does make me push through even when I want to give up. She won't give up on you, and that is what a personal trainer should do, that is why it is worth the price.

And I know that may be a cliche but it isn't. This is a community gym. The atmosphere is kind and supportive no matter who you are or your fitness level. For reference I am a 30 year old woman and have friends here that are twice my age. I've never felt pressured, bullied or creeped out once. Now let's talk about the staff... Brent. Brent, is the manager and has been since I joined. He has built a wonderful team and as far as I can tell a pretty positive work environment for everyone. He always remembers my name despite the fact that I've hardly ever worked with him directly. Wendy. Wendy is exceptional with members and our community. She always waves and stops to talk to me when she passes. And I'm pretty sure she knows everyone at this point :) I've made friends with many of the trainers here and so will you. Let's see who we've got... Zoe. Zoe is someone I've known for two years now and have actually become close friends with. She is without a doubt the nicest woman I've ever met. She knows a lot about running and cardio, so if you've got the thrill for a race she is your girl! Dan. Dan is a character and who many people turn to for advice about basic movement mechanics and health. Oh and he is pretty much athletic in everything. Just ask what he does in his free time. Haha Chris. Chris is a rockstar. He does classes in the early mornings along with a few other trainers and is consistently a happy guy. He will always try to make you laugh...don't tell Dan I said that. Stacy. I don't know Stacy very well but I know she works hard and is an early bird that loves to run. She has always been very sweet and kind towards everyone. I can't list all the people that make this place great but these are definitely the people that have influenced me the most. For the first year at Oak I worked out almost every day and every day I was greeted with the same kindness and support. Without that I'm not sure I would have stuck out with my journey. I can now do 5 pull ups in a row, deadlift over 220lbs and hip thrust over 300lbs. These are just a few of the goals I've set and reached for myself and I'm so glad I was able to accomplish them in such a place as Oak. If you have toured the place you already now how clean it is and that there are countless showers and lockers to choose from. Equipment is kept clean and ready to use. I hardly see a broken piece of equipment. And if I have it doesn't stay broken for long. Not all gyms are great so if you thought this place doesn't have enough to offer I think I can gladly state that it does. So if you are thinking about joining please don't hesitate. It's worth it.
