Because you see, Saint-Lazare isn't known for the coolness of its bars - or even for the mere existence of them. So I was deciding to bring them all to Burger King (which IS what Saint-Lazare is known for, actually) when I saw the Semaphore. €5 cocktails from 5 to 9pm - the well-too-classic Mojitos and Pina Colada, but also Martini Royale, Cosmopolitan, and my little favourite the Black Russian (I know, I know, disgusting, blah blah blah.) They are quite good for the price, and apparently they also have an OK choice of beer for 4-6€ a pint. As for the place itself: it's young, laid-back (babyfoot alert!), quite loud, not at all hipster. You can stay forever with your friends and nobody will try to come and force you into buying another drink. Oh, and when you begin to be angry, they have some snacks, tapas-like, at around €5 each - I didn't try them, but I saw several people ordering them, so they have to be at least OK!

The food was served tapas style, and they have deals such as getting 5 (or 10!) plates at a discounted price. We ordered 5 for the two of us, but the tapas here are much larger than they are in the states, so we were STUFFED and didn't even finish three fourths of it! Well worth the money. Because it is a more authentic place, most waiters didn't speak English. They were helpful to the best of their ability, and I would highly suggest giving them a try even if you're not overly confident in your French!

Unfortunately, it was past 10 pm so a lot of places were closed. We were getting frantic trying to find a restaurant that was still open. We finally pinged this place on GoogleMaps. I have to say, this place is the definition of a hidden gem. It's a small French tapas place off on a side street that unless you were really searching, you would probably walk by it in favor of larger restaurants. I don't know if our waiter was also the owner or the sommelier, but either way, his English was limited. Luckily, my fiancee's sister speaks French so she was able to translate the menu (to an extent). As such, this was a tapas restaurant so everything was small plates and meant to be shared. I don't remember the exact name of everything we ordered, but I remember a Pad Thai, a beef dish, smoked salmon, octopus, and a fried dish (maybe calamari, but I don't remember). The food is excellent and packed with flavor. You'd be surprised how filling these little dishes can be. If you ever come to Paris, I recommend going off the beaten path for this little piece of heaven.

I had a typical steak frites dinner here one night with some great wine which was fine but it wasn't the food here that kept my attention, it was the people watching and the great staff. I got zero- Parisian attitude here but a real "bon vivant" vibe from the people who work here, from the servers to the bartenders to the cooks, people here seemed happy. Imagine a resto/brasserie full of characters that might have stepped out of a Wes Anderson or Jean-Pierre Jeunet film full of conviviality and joviality and you might get a reasonable facsimile of this place.

And that's why they're so fit/skinny. They control when food comes out. I LOVE that idea. We sat there, ordering local ales and beers and practiced our French as best we could, only to realize we were failing when we were suddenly being addressed in English. I'm sad we didn't get to taste the food, we had another appointment that day, so we left, but this place will forever hold a special place in my wannabe Parisian heart.
