This library is beautiful. I love the whole "vibe". I see what others (Jen B. and Josh R.) are complaining about, but "to each his/her own", I say. I actually reside part of the year in Chillicothe...but often, the very lovely small library there doesn't have what I'm looking for. This place has dazzled me! I'm a library fanatic, and living in two states (Colorado and Illinois) and in a LARGE metro area (Denver)...I have cards with 3 counties in the Denver Metro Area, plus my own former Northern Colorado hometown. I must say that this really is a spectacular use of taxpayer money, and is in the top two of my "go to" libraries!
First of all...the books! Library budgets have been cut tremendously in many cities, including Denver...this shows when you are looking for any literary new releases not on the bestseller list. However, in Peoria...it seems not to be the case. The cataloging and processing behind the scenes is fantastic, and I've often found new lit. fiction (not to mention my guilty pleasure 'high fantasy" novels) on the shelf...ready to go with no waiting list. Perhaps that says something about the reading public...that these books are not in demand, but kudos must go to the "behind the scenes" library staff who make the call on what to purchase. Perhaps people in Peoria don't realize just how fortunate they are? The book selection here is wonderful, folks! And if it isn't here...you'll probably easily be able to get it from another Peoria branch.
Second, the building is elegant and streamlined, without being "cold". There are lovely nooks to read in, with views out to the green and well kept landscape of the library "garden".
Finally, to answer the complaint about not having human contact in this library...there is an information/reference desk located, front and center as you walk in the door, with a friendly staff member there all day. And, myself...I actually prefer to check my own books out. It's easy, efficient and "tech-cool" to do so, but there is a person who works that desk too, if you want or need help. As for Josh's complaints about taxes...I guess that applies to ME, since I don't own a home here, but I certainly shop in Peoria, and I'm sure other "north county" residents do as well. This place is a gem. The community will grow into it...it's a lovely addition to the city! Go see! read more
