Terrible. Never on time. Sent me an email that they are going to disconnect our service unless we upgrade our meters. So i schedule a meter replacement appointment, take 4 hours off from work to be home during that time, and they just don't even show up. I waited extra hour and still didn't show up. called them and they were not helpful at all. Do not recommend. read more

The fact that Peoples Gas does not work with landlords and building owners directly on properties with rented units to gain access to gas meters is ridiculous. I just ended my service at my old apartment after 3 years. I was told three years ago that my most affordable option would be to do a budget monthly plan. They gave me a monthly payment price that was based on my previous gas usage. That was initially $140. They then notified me that the monthly total due would be $160 due to our increase in our gas usage the previous year. Which fair enough, I was notified before this change took place. EVERY MONTH THE APP SAID I HAD A TOTAL OF $160. SO ONE WOULD ASSUME THAT IS ALL I OWED. I paid my $160 "bill" every single month. I ended my service on June 30th and 2 DAYS LATER I get a bill charging me $650!!!! I immediately called the company to get clarification and got no useful help or sympathy. They said that I should have noticed that our usage was over our monthly gas "allowance" so now that we have ended our surface this is what we owed in overage. They never CLEARLY indicated that I owed more than $160 a month. I was told I would get a consistent monthly bill. HAD I KNOWN. That at the end of my service I would get a $650 bill I would have NEVER agreed to this "advice" and "plan". It's a shame there are not many/any other options in Chicago because this company is HORRIBLE. read more

She asked if I know where the gas meter is, I said no but I have access the property and the technician will know where it is. She said she could not schedule the appointment since her technician would not know where it is. She told me to find where the gas meter first and call back for appointment. I'm in the process of selling my rental and the service team stated they would be at my home to start service under my name from 12-2pm. The original time they provided was from 12-4 so I was impressed they were able to move the appt from 12-2. I also provided the name and phone number of the individual that will be onsite to let the technician in. I have an inspection scheduled at 230 so it's imperative they arrived by the 2pm time they extended. When I called to see where the technician is, the service member stated they would be there by 4pm. When I asked why they were unable to come during the specified time the service member stated the time frame was misrepresented even though they had notes of confirmation by 2pm. Additionally they still had me down as the person to contact. Apparently my previous communication was overlooked and they are choosing what information they would like to use. Lastly, they had the audacity to ask me if I was happy with the service being provided. I was misled on timing and nothing was done to go by their word. My answer was absolutely not. From previous notes, it appears customer service is an ongoing issue with peoples gas. What a horribly lead organization. read more

I'm moving into the city from the suburbs. Nicor has always been very easy to work with. Peoples Gas could not possibly make this any more difficult. I called two weeks ago (three weeks before my move) to start my service. Even though there is already gas service in the unit I'm moving to, they have to send out a technician to start me, which makes no sense. What makes even less sense is that I was told I couldn't schedule the technician until a week before my move! So I've been refreshing the website daily, hoping I could schedule it sooner, but nope. Wouldn't let me schedule until yesterday. I get my confirmation email and not only is it the wrong date, it's the completely wrong address! Not even in the same state. So I email them and ask them to correct it. They correct the address but told me the date wasn't an error, that this was the soonest they were available, even though the last person I spoke to confirmed the date. Even though the date they scheduled was for a location in a different state, apparently they have the same availability? Again, makes no sense. Do they have the same techs working both Wisconsin and Illinois? So now I'm going to be without cooking gas until they can show up. I literally booked it as soon as the website would allow and the date was already full. If they're filling up that quickly, why not let people book further out? And there's no waitlist either, so even if there's a cancellation on the date I need, it doesn't matter, I can't take that appointment. Absolutely terrible. I haven't even had my service started and I already wish I didn't have to deal with this company. I never had any of these issues with Nicor and I've been using them for 20 years. read more

If i could give 0 stars i would. Ive called peoples gas about my payment plan multiple times and there response is ridiculous. I have a visual proof of my original contract of the due dates of the payment plan, on the phone they tell me different dates which are at a later time. Even though i have paid the payment plan based on the due dates on the original contract they are now telling me that does not count because "I've paid them before the due date" so my balance is still the same. I am currently on the phone with them and they keep putting me on hold "to figure out the problem" it's been 2 hours.... Horrible service read more

Hands down the worst customer service of any company in the Chicago area. People's gas is in the process of moving all meters from the inside to the outside of the buildings. Before the works begin, people's gas promises to "RESTORE EVERYTHING TO PRE EXISTENCE CONDITIONS". But they don't Yes, they have a "Restoration Department" but, plain and simple they don't want to work. - They never answer the phone. The call back doesn't come until hours later, if you're lucky. No doubt hoping you are no longer available. - when I got to talk to someone, (Lisa) she assured me "EVERYTHING WILL BE RESTORED TO PRE EXISTING CONDITIONS, YOU JUST GOT TO GIVE THEM SOME TIME".  Five months later, that time hasn't come. - When I insisted in talking with a supervisor,  W. Burns contacted me claiming to be the construction manager. Later, mr. N. Slattery claimed to be mr. Burns supervisor. Both assured me: "everything would be restored to pre existing conditions". But they don't want to work. They wanted me to do their job: to talk to MEADE ELECTRIC CO'S people. The people who did the damage to begin  with. That is their job. Not mine; I did not hire Meade Electric. People's Gas did. Both, W. Burns and N. Slattery visited the worksite but only with the company of Meade electric workers. Not to request of Meade to do the right thing and restore property to pre existing conditions, but to gang up and try to bully me into accepting anything Meade wanted: to patch things at as low cost as possible. I asked mr Slattery to refer me to his supervisor, since he was unable to ask Meade to live up to People's Gas promises to restore damages to pre existing conditions. His answer?: "I HAVE NO SUPERVISOR. YOU LET MEADE DO WHAT THEY WANT, OR WE WON'T REPAIR ANYTHING". My advice? Take pictures. Lots of them. Before, during and after construction. Document everything. Request everything in writing. Meade Electric is reckless and uses "Laborers" workers for all repairs. Concrete, landscape, painting... everything would be repaired by low pay, unskilled laborers workers. read more

It's a shame that we let utility companies monopolize entire regions. It allows them to do the bare minimum and let complaints go unheard with no incentive to change. If I could switch to a different provider, I absolutely would. Don't bother calling, you will have sad, relatively unintelligent people with only basic literacy skills read off a script. "ThE CoMpAnY iSn'T aT fAuLt." Ok, sure, but it sure is more worthless than a sack of dog turd left in a snow mound. Like myriad other reviewers have mentioned, they think it's appropriate to let people sit in freezing apartments in the winter when it's below 0 outside for days on end or a week before they send someone to start a meter. This review is not for the company- in fact I have great disdain over the monopoly which is peoples gas in the Chicagoland area. This review is for the AMAZING gas tech who restarted my gas service yesterday. As a single woman it can be kinda nerve wracking having a male tech come out, so it was really nice having a woman technician for once. But that isn't what made her so great. As many others in the reviews indicated, peoples gas makes you feel absolutely helpless following your gas service getting shut off. The tech that came by yesterday was the first time through the whole process that I felt reassured. She was kind, patient, and took the time to help me understand the process as she was working on whatever she did. I just regret not getting her name, otherwise I would have mentioned it! First, I have to preface this by saying that the customer service employee who I spoke to on the phone was wonderful. He was patient and helpful. We all know that the customer service employees we speak to are just doing their jobs and don't have any say in how the company is run, so I don't want this to reflect badly on him. We all also know that Peoples Gas is the Worst. Company. Ever. I'm really not informed about politics and/or the regulation of utility companies, but I'm sure that we'll never be rid of them. The only reason they are still in business is that they are literally the only option. This isn't the first time Peoples Gas has run afoul of me. A few years ago, I had to sit in my new apartment with no furniture a week before moving, because they give you ridiculous four hour windows. Cable companies don't even give you windows that big! Furthermore, even ComEd has figured out how to turn your service on without you being there. Why not you, Peoples Gas!? Why not you!? Anyway, the technician never showed, and when I was leaving I discovered a note on the door that said the technician had tried to contact me, but I hadn't answered, which was a boldfaced lie. The technician had neither called nor buzzed the intercom. Then I had to reschedule. This time, I went to their website to move my service. Then I got an email saying that they had processed my request to stop service at my current place but not to start service at my new apartment, and I would have to call to complete the start service request. There was no explanation as to why. So, I called in, and the poor customer service representative had to tell me that I would have to pay a $38 charge, because the previous tenant must've had the gas meter physically locked when they moved out, and someone from Peoples Gas would have to come out and unlock it and check the appliances. What. In. The. Actual. Fuck. does that even mean!!!!!????? I've never heard of someone having the meter locked when they move out!? Why would you even do that if you're stopping your service anyway!? Also, why am I being charged an amount that is more than my monthly gas bill for something that the previous tenant did!!!!!????? Sigh, really this review is a moot point. It is the only weapon that I, a beleaguered customer, have to wield against this corporate behemoth, and it is a blunt-tipped and rusty one. I'll probably reach out to my Alderman's office, but there might not be anything they can do. We are all Peoples Gas's bitches, and they know it. Evil never dies. read more

They are horrible . I called 9/29/22 to set up account for heat and cooking gas at my new apartment. Moved in 10/1/22 and go gas no heat. I called and they said the earliest a tech could come out would be 10/13. Well the tech was a no show. I called peoples gas for an explanation and they said it must've been a glitch with Schedueling and the next available appt is 10/25! They said they could expedite my request for a tech to come sooner but that could be a few days for a response. Ridiculous!!! My landlord even called them to try and see if they could come sooner but each rep was nastier than the last . One rep even said "I don't know what to tell you" . Seriously ?! This wasn't on me that the tech didn't show. It's October in Chicago and that's the best peoples gas can do?! No accountability from anyone ! DO BETTER ! read more

The fact that they overcharged me for my bill and on top of that tried to make me pay the bill for 2 addresses that I've never lived at. I sent an email confirming this twice and they still won't acknowledge that I don't live there and they make me pay 2 other bills . To top it all off they shut of the gas during one of the coldest days of the year and you also mixed up my address with the floor below since in your system Unit 3 is Floor 2 because the mailing address is different than People's Gas address. Terrible company. The app logs me out every time I do an update to iOS and it won't let me save my password. I set it to remind me for my bill, via notifications on phone, text, and email. I never get ANY. I can usually remember when the gas bill is due but I suffer mental illness and sometimes I go through a bout of depression and things fall apart without reminders. I now have late fees on top of depression to worry about. Thanks, People's Gas. You don't even send emails about a bill, even when it is late. I have never had a more miserable experience with a company in my entire life. My wife and I moved into a condo a week ago and have not been able to get gas. It is FEBRUARY in Chicago and absolutely freezing, we are terrified the pipes will burst. The kicker is that the reason we don't have gas is because People's Gas made a mistake AND admitted that it was their fault! They had shut the gas off inadvertently and refuse to turn it back on. We continue to be passed around from agent to agent, none of whom know what is going on and all claim that there are no notes in the system. They all just half-heartedly say they are sorry and there is nothing they can do. We are not in default, we have done nothing wrong. We literally are just TRYING to become customers and they won't even let us. We FINALLY had our scheduled appointment yesterday and when they didn't show we called again to see what was up. They said the previous case had never been closed out by an agent and that we would need to set up another appointment and the first available is 8 DAYS FROM NOW. That will be over 2 1/2 weeks of no gas in the middle of Chicago winter. We have a child and two dogs and don't know what to do. I have tried the better business bureau and the state multiple times and to no avail. It is terrifying that companies can do this to people. I would pay someone a significant amount of money to come turn my gas on. All I want is for this nightmare to be over. read more

Apparently peoples gas doesn't like it when you try save money on gas unless you use one of their special plans. I work on call for work but I was told I would have to give up my entire afternoon and say no to work while peoples gas comes into figure out why my gas bill is so low. I told them I don't have gas heating in my apartment building and that I use an electric burner from target instead of my gas stove and oven , they still refused to believe me and insisted on sending someone in. Some of the absolute worst customer service I have ever experience. The representatives on the phone were incredibly nice, but communicating with this company is a nightmare at times. We have not had heat or hot water for 3 days while it is snowing in Chicago (and we live in a cold basement unit) And I'm being told it will take 24-48 hours to get our heat turned back on (all because of a miscommunication on their end) It is now approaching 30 hours, and now they tell me I won't have help until at least Monday (Started calling Thursday, it is now Friday.) Peoples Gas is upgrading the gas meters in our neighborhood. I had to schedule an appointment with a Peoples Gas employee to tell him where the new gas meter should go. No big deal. Did that a couple of weeks ago. Today I get a letter labelled "Final Notice of Disconnection" because it said I didn't schedule the appointment. The date of disconnection is tomorrow. So now I am sitting on the phone, trying to get this thing resolved. Been on hold for over an hour waiting to speak to someone. I've never experienced anything like this in my life. The lack of action from a company and the blatant lies and run-arounds are enough to make me truly believe I've lost my mind. My husband and I moved into a condo on Friday (5 days ago) and when we called to switch the gas to our name we were assured everything was taken care of. Plot twist, People's Gas messed up and turned off our gas. It's the middle of winter in Chicago, we're a family of 5 with no heat, unable to shower, do laundry, wash dishes, or even cook!! Our pipes are at risk of freezing at this point. When we called on Friday they said no one could come out until Tuesday between 12-4. We called so many times this weekend I lost count of all the names of agents who passed us along like hot potato to the next agent who couldn't give less of a shit than the last. One name that stood out was Antoine, a manager who gave his word that he would get it expedited sooner than Tuesday. It's now WEDNESDAY and guess who never showed up yesterday to turn our gas on. Today we are being told that yes it was their error for not coming yesterday but that "the best they can do" is MARCH 4th! Which is 8 days from now. Completely unacceptable. If our power isn't on by the end of the day 2/26/20 we're taking legal action, we've already been in contact with our lawyer. So I suggest they figure out how to use a phone and call up their technician (which apparently is impossible) and tell him our house is next on the list today. read more
