I have ordered from Penzeys for many years but didn't realize they had a shop in Buffalo. It was a cook's dream filled with spices. I loved the smaller sized packets... perfect for sampling some of the mixtures before buying a large bottle. The employees were knowledgeable and helpful. The store had a very homey, country feel. I came home with a nice selection of samples to try and old favorites. read more

pretty great place to get spices. i do wish there were more asian spices though! especially msg, if you count that as a spice

I have been shopping at Penzey's for years and as a cook I love their spices - the quality and selection are the best! The store has a good layout, and if there is anything you can't find (or you are in a hurry and don't want to wander), the staff is always helpful. Many of the more uncommon spices have a jar on the shelves with a lid that can be opened to smell the spice. This place is perfect for food adventurers! They carry spices that I haven't seen anywhere else in Buffalo like Aleppo Pepper and Fenugreek. They have amazing spice blends - Northwoods is my favorite go-to for pasta and fish - and adorable gift boxes if you need easy gifts. Most spices are available in several sizes, including larger plastic bags to restock in bulk and refill your jars for the favorites, and some even have little sample packets if you want to try something new. They often have specials that are announced on their email list and social media. You can also place an order online and just stop by to pick it up, avoiding the shipping fees. Parking here is kind of a pain with the street meters but it's well worth the effort. While you are here, pay attention to the sidewalk - the Buffalo Pothole Bandit has done great work in this area and there is a lot of public art to enjoy. read more

This is my favourite spice store! They have an amazing selection of spices and herbs, as well as vanilla. They have great gift sets! The customer service is great! Their unique blends are so good! You can sign up to get notifications for their sales! If you love to cook this store is a must! They sell smaller packages of many spice blends, which make it convenient to try without committing to a large jar or package. I wish they'd put another store in the Amherst area! read more

Loved the sign YOU MUST WEAR A MASK to enter the store. Clear and concise you MUST to protect the people who work there and other shoppers. It only makes sense! Penzeys is the "only" store to buy spices at if you are a serious cook/chef. They get the best and provide their customers with the best at reasonable prices. So, walking into Buffalo's Penzey's I knew the quality of my purchase but I was very pleased (once again) with the service and the store. The store's layout encourages "window" shopping and it well designed to help shoppers find what you need. It also allows you to discover something you have never tried all at a really decent price. I have always found the staff to be very knowledgeable and today was no exception. The clerk knew exactly where the item I needed was and was very pleasant to deal with. The challenge for this city-based Penzey's frankly is the parking. On the street parking by meter is a game of cat and mouse. I thought I had a spot but no ... turned the corner and was too quick to pull into the spot on the next residential street. Had to do a big time loop carefully scouting potential locations ... found one on the non-metered side street so I saved my self a few quarters that then went to my purchase. read more

Wonderful spice store! I found this company because I needed some of their jars for a school project. I am so happy that I was introduced to the wonderful, high end products and inclusive and kind culture that the owner cultivates. The products are a little more expensive than other spice brands but with the discounts it ends up being pretty close in the end. I will say the spices are much better quality than what you get in the grocery store. And they have wonderful custom spice blends which make cooking easy and more fun. There are also premade boxes which have made wonderful and unique gifts for other cooks in my life. This store is still curbside shopping only. You will need to place an order online and choose in store pick up. Once your order is ready you will receive a phone call and arrange a time you are able to pick up. Your order will be placed inside the front door. They are not accepting orders over the phone right now so just go right to the online store. I wasn't aware of this when I went last week but I was lucky that my order was ready in about an hour and I was able to grab after I finished my other errands. Sign up for their emails and you will get discounts and some free spices. I have come across and tried many new things this way. The emails are written by the owner, Bill, who is always optimistic and wishes the best for humanity as a whole. His words are always a highlight and offer a new outlook on some hard days this past year. Some of my favorites are chicken taco blend, bold taco blend, sunny paris, lemon pepper, fox point, chicken soup base, granulated garlic and the list goes on! Don't think you can go wrong here. read more

My review is for 2 specific seasonings. 1) the Very Hot chilli flakes. I love spicy food and these peppers flake are more spicy than your average red pepper flake but not to the level of habanero or ghost pepper. It adds the additional heat on your dishes (without killing you) and makes a great chilli oil. If you love spicy food - you have to buy these flakes. 2) Fox Point. Everyone has picky kids but my daughter will eat anything with fox point on it..even fish and vegetables. They have so many herbs and spices but I wanted to call out these two! Check Penzeys out - it's an amazing store. read more

I've never been disappointed at anything from Penzeys. It's a zen place to get great spices and try new ones. There are containers for sniffing if you're unsure whether to try something or not. From ordinary basics to salad bases and cocoa mixes - plus wonderful gifting packages with kitchen goodness in a box with a towel or mug. The flavors are extraordinarily interesting and the associates are so helpful. What's not to love about their message? Love People. Cook them tasty food. read more

If you havent come here you are missing EVERYTHING! When Penzeys first arrived I didn't know anything about it, now years after they found a home on Elmwood I am a big fan. Simply Penzeys is a spice store with everything you need and more. No matter how much you think you know the shelves you'll find something new you'll want to use it in your cooking or baking. In my opinion everything is high quality and comes with a fair price. Probably one on my absolute favorite aspects of this place is the sizes (oz's) that you can select from when buying. Whether you are trying something new, using something familiar or buying a spice for one time use you can buy a decently priced small jar to a larger bag of those spices you more frequently use. *raise your hand if you have spices in your cupboard and not sure when you bought them* Oh and get on the mailing list and like/follow them on social media. Through emails they will frequently send coupons for free spices! read more

I'd heard about this store for years, but had never stopped in. Recently, I was given 3 of their spices, and whenever I have to replace any of my spices, I'll be going here! I haven't yet tried the Sicilian Salad Seasoning, but the Rocky Mountain Seasoning and the Brady Street Cheese Sprinkles are unique and delicious. Have tried them so far on chicken and fish. Easy way to change-up cooking a simple meal. read more

I absolutely am obsessed with this spice store. It's like a slice of heaven whenever you stop in it. It smells divine, and I usually end up thinking about all of the things I can make and what I can use each spice for. It's small, in the heart of Elmwood. Parking can be a pain in the butt, but that's to be expected. If you want fresh spices, Penzey's is the place for you. They have some of the best blends, and I particularly like stocking up for the holidays. One of my absolute favorites is the Arizona Dreaming. One named in honor of John McCain.. I also have loved using their cardamon, mace, and various cinnamon for blending herbal teas. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Have never had a terrible experience with anyone there. They have specials often. The owner is very generous, vocal, and political, and many of the spice specials usually tie into a point of discussion or a social justice issue. If that offends you, then it might be an issue, and I guess my advice is focus on the spices because surely we can all agree on how amazing those are. Once I started using them, I couldn't think of going back. You can taste the difference. read more

I love, love, love Penzey's and have been getting their spices since before they came to Buffalo when my Mom used to get the catalog, which was so fun to read! I love that they're such a heartfelt company. They are more of a spice ministry, than a spice store... if you are part of their email list you'll see what I mean! I think more of the spices I have from Penzey's were free versus paid for! They store itself is not opened during covid, but they have a really easy process for ordering online and picking it up right in the vestibule. The inside of the store smells amazing!!! You can smell all the spices in special jars which is helpful in deciding what you'll like. I have lots and lots of favorites here. A few of my favorites... Brady Street sprinkle, Fox point seasoning, California seasoned pepper...! Always excellent customer service!!! read more

Wegmans let me down recently. I was on the search for sumac, a spice. One you can easily make a substitute version of, which I did the first time I needed it. But then I needed it again. So I found myself at Penzeys. I'm baffled I've never been here before. But I don't think I have. I cook with tons of herbs and spices but most we have on hand and many we grow ourselves. Walking in here it's well organized and there are tons of products on offer. I asked the employee and he took me right to the sumac area. Comes in three sizes, I picked up the smallest. In a quick perusal of the place I noticed hot chocolate powder being sold. That sounds like a nice gift or treat for the house one day. They had a few other things like that. Well worth a visit if looking for some spices. Street parking on Elmwood. read more

I love Penzeys. Buffalo is so lucky to have a location, which is only one of two in New York State. Like other Penzeys stores I've been to, the Elmwood Village store is welcoming and has staff who are very happy to assist. In pre-COVID times, employees have even helped me in and out of the store when I've shopped there with my son in his stroller. All of Penzeys' herbs and spices are high quality, and pre-COVID they often ran great promotions. Hopefully they'll offer them again once they are fully up and running again, so as other Yelpers have said, get on their email list! The emails can be political, but happen to pretty much align with my own political/social views, so I'm happy to support a likeminded business. Right now, the Elmwood store is doing curbside pickup. The process is very easy: you order from the Penzeys website and pay online. A store employee will give you a call once they've prepared their order, and to coordinate a pickup time. I placed my order midday Saturday and got a call about an hour later. My purchases were in placed in a bag and left for me in the store's vestibule (with my name clearly on the bag, so it wasn't confused with other customers' purchases), so pickup was contactless and easy. read more

OMG stepping into this store is an amazing experience. The aroma of all the different spices is AWESOME! There is a sample of each spice to open and smell. Each one is clearly labeled with the ingredients. I enjoyed walking through and exploring all the different combinations and specialized blends. They were offering a freebie with a limited purchase so I took advantage of that awesome deal and picked up some goodies. I think I managed to get Cinnamon Sugar, Quebec Beef, Garlic and a BBQ blend The customer service was great. The young man and lady working were VERY helpful offering ideas and input. People seemed very comfortable asking questions and getting direction on ideas. I checked the company web site and they offer numerous tips and recipes using the spices. In a time when people are a lot more conscious about what they are eating. I think it is great that this company offers you an authentic product read more

So thankful for Penzeys! They're a chain but you wouldn't be able to tell while in the store - it's cute and well organized, abc order by spice/herb. Very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable staff. Love that they have jars of each herb that you can open, touch, and sniff. Did you know there's Oregano from Mexico and Turkey? How're they different? The labels explain, open the big jars yourself and take a sniff. Love that all of their labels include suggested uses as well, very helpful. Their spice blends are also very creative- lots to choose from. They have a little coloring station for kiddos too. Best part of Penzeys- they are a morally conscious company that truly cares about people and our environment. They also send out coupons and freebies 1-2x a month. Sign up for their email list and you won't regret it! Parking- on-street parking and if you go on the weekend be prepared to walk a little bit. read more

Nice store with helpful employees! The products that they carry are high quality---there is no comparison to what you will find here vs mega mass produced grocery store brands. Just opening a jar of spice or herbs from here and you are hit with the wonderful aromas. I particularly like many of their herb and spice "blends" Gift collections with assorted spices are also displayed and would be an appreciated and unique gift to anyone on your list. I was a little disappointed that they did not carry some of the more unusual spices I was searching for. read more

I can't give a star rating bc I stopped today, saw the 'no instore purchases, call or go on line to place your order'. I called since I was standing out front of store. The BEST spices are at Penzeys. I've loved purchasing spices from Penzeys for years but only just realized that I NEEDED Penzeys to make my food taste perfect. Two weeks ago, I made a cauliflower soup at my parents house and used some of their Vietnamese Cinnamon from Penzeys. A week ago, I made that same soup at my house but I didn't have that same cinnamon. I had some generic store brand and it didn't taste as good. I took a batch of soup to my parents house and added the Vietnamese Cinnamon to it. It was back to tasting really good! If you don't already, sign up for their e-mails. They send out coupons quite frequently and they're REALLY GOOD. A couple weeks ago, they offered one for a totally free bottle...no purchase necessary! Today I used two coupons and with a $10 purchase, I got a free large bottle, free small bottle, and a $5 box which contained 4 small bottles. I walked out of the store with so many spices for so little money. read more

This little shop on Elmwood has every spice you could imagine!! They have salt free spices which is always a plus in my book. The store is very organized and clean. They have unique spices I have never seen anywhere else and such a variety including: Taco seasonings, cake spice, apple pie spice, tons of different chili pepper spices, vietnamese extra fancy cinnamon (which is unbelievable), pepper blends and so many more. It's expensive no doubt, but you are getting top quality. If you're a foodie I highly recommend checking this place out. read more

Penzeys Spices - So many unique spices - Herbs & Spices Near Me - Buffalo, New York

LOVE THIS STORE. Been living about a 10 min walk away for a year now and been in a couple of times. STAFF IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE. This is important when buying spices since they tend to go a long way and stay in your pantry for quite some time. I've asked a million different questions and they always have a thoughtful answer. And once in awhile the answer is "I'm not sure, we don't sell that product in this store so I'm not trained on that" and I appreciate the honesty! HIGH QUALITY PRODUCTS. I first heard about Penzey's when we lived in Pittsburgh a few years back, but never stopped in. Now, I usually first check this store first before buying a new spice. Quality really comes through in the cooking. EXCELLENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR NEW PRODUCTS. I went in yesterday to replenish on sea salt and ground black pepper, along with bay leaves and dutch cocoa (the latter is SO GOOD for homemade hot chocolate). I had a craving for pasta and wanted to make homemade tomato sauce for the first time, but wanted a convenient spice blend for it. The employee recommended the Italian Blend. I used it that night and it came out great, went perfectly with the can of peeled tomatoes in my pantry, 1 fresh cut roma tomato, and S&P. THEY HAVE SMELL JARS FOR EVERYTHING. When you buy spices in a grocery store, you generally can't open up a bottle to see the texture, or smell it, etc. But at Penzey's every item has a "smell jar" that is an easy to open jar with the product inside that you can look into. Simple but brilliant idea. ONE LAST THING Definitely ask about special promos/freebies when you check out. Nearly every time I've shopped there I've received a bonus spice bottle or two and sometimes even extra gift sets they have overstocked from holidays. PAYMENT They don't take American Express. I was traveling light but thankfully had enough cash on hand, but will keep in mind for next time. read more

Penzey's is the only spice specialty store I have been in, and it is a fun store. It's easy to get around in, and truly a sensory experience. The "smelling jars" are unique to any place I've really been to in Buffalo. It can actually be a little overwhelming if there are not specific spices on my list when I walk in, because there are SO many choices. I don't know what Penzey's does to their spices, but short of fresh herbs, they are the best spices to use... even the garlic salt I have from there is the best garlic salt I've ever used. It's a great place to stock up on the usual spices and a lot of unusual spices as well as extracts, and so far I have liked everything I've bought from there. I really like that they have spice blends there with no multi-syllable words in them (ie, preservatives) and also salt-free blends, which can be tough to find in your average supermarket. For such a specialty store, I'm pretty happy with the prices. They offer some more high end spices, but you get what you pay for. I definitely also recommend signing up for their monthly catalog, which has sent me coupons for free spices and a couple spice gift sets. The staff is nice too, and really helpful if you have questions - but I like the product enough that I'd probably shop there even if they weren't. I am not going to give up on the Co-op's great bulk spice section, but I am definitely happy to have Penzey's in my life too. read more

Great, fresh herbs and spices with a very helpful staff. As an experienced cook, I never used to buy already made spice mixes, but Penzey's blends have changed my mind. I would suggest trying their Northwoods or Arizona Dreaming varieties. Both are great on almost anything and in vinaigrettes. In addition, if you sign up for their email they'll send you coupons for free spices and special online deals. read more

Love, love Penzey's products! It's my go-to brand for all my baking and cooking needs. I'm so thankful we have a location here in Buffalo. The employees are so kind and helpful! read more

I've gotta be honest. I don't love this store as much as everyone else seems to. While there are some lesser-known, cool spices here, the vast majority of this store's offerings seem to be blends of easily-available spices that you could make yourself for less. "Hey, we added some chili powder to this shaker of salt! That'll be six dollars." No, thanks. And for spices like dill, basil, that sort of thing? When the fresh version's readily available at the grocery store (or better yet, at the local nursery as something you can pot or plant at home), I don't know why you'd buy the dried version. There are a few interesting offerings here, like small cinnamon nubs that'd be great for mulled wine, and the option to buy certain spices in varying sizes is nice if you're the kind of person who goes through black pepper like whoa (I do). But if you're looking for interesting spices and herbs at decent prices, you're better off simply picking them up at the grocery store, shopping an Indian or Asian grocery store, or in the case of herbs, buying the seeds or plants and growing them fresh at home. Trust me, your guests will be more impressed by the end result than by your cool-looking, overpriced spice bottles. read more

Penzey's is an old friend of mine because of where I am originally from. Seattle is the first Penzey's I went to, on a trip with my father to find a good barbecue rub. So I was very excited to find one not too far from where I live. I happen to be one of those vintage weirdo's that collects spice bottles... Penzey's, in all its glory, offers me something special: a chance to buy different seasonings in package form. The large, bulk sized ziplock baggies are a good thing for me because I never have to buy the pricey bottles. I have only bought the basics spices, like cumin, chili spice, and tellicherry black pepper. And I try to catch any 'end of the Season' sales they have, like a four pack of salt-free rubs for $10. I'm also hooked on their gift packs, because they have saved me on more than one 'last minute gift' run. Penzey's works for me. But, I don't see it working for the occasional baker or the cook who only makes a meal twice a week. read more

If you like string-like pieces in your crystallized ginger, you might like Penzeys product. The frozen pizza mix is okay.

The best spice shop around! They have an awesome selection of spices, and even have multiple varieties of the same spice/herb! Who knew there were so many different kinds of nutmeg! (Seriously.) Staff is super friendly, and I recommend singing up for the monthly catalog/newsletter because it always has a coupon for free spices on the cover! The spices aren't the cheapest, but the quality makes it worth it. They have a lot of spice blends for specific meals (i.e. Chili 3000 seasoning, and various other specialty blends for steaks and chicken). Staff is very knowledgable and friendly and will teach you ALL ABOUT the different kinds of nutmeg! read more

I love the spices at Penzeys.. it's the political garbage I get when I get coupons and deals

I have been a long time customer of Penzeys and was so excited when I learned they were finally opening a locatin in WNY! First suggestion is when you visit the tore, grab a catalog and sign up to receive them at your house Almost every issue includes a coupon for a free jar of the spice they are featuring in that issue. The best news is they honor those coupons for a year! Since I am about 25 minutes from the Elmwood store, I save my coupons up and take a few at a time. I am always looking to try new spices/extracts! Did I mention that they also have recipes in their catalogs?!! A few of my favorite and must have's in my spice rack are: Minced Garlic Roasted Garlic Vietnamese Cinnamon Red Black Madagascar Vanilla Beans Original Taco Granulated Toasted Onion Stop in next time you are in their area- you won't be disappointed! read more

For years my spice rack has been full of Penzeys spices. Each fall, as if fulfilling a ritual to the cooking gods, I would place my order to fill up my coffers. When they opened an actual brick and mortar store, and on Elmwood of all places, I was in cooking heaven! Yes, the standard spices are over priced compared to what you would find at a grocery store. The prices for sea salt is tough to accept. Yet this is not where Penzeys shines. The strength of this store lies in it's blends of spices. One example that springs to mind is their "Pizza Spice". It seems a simple thing, yet when tossed into my homemade dough, it elevates it to another level. It's a magic bottle that could turn a frozen Tops pizza into something edible. It's a place to go to walk down the aisle and breathe in the smell a thousand different countries...right on Elmwood Ave. read more

From the moment you walk in the door you are inundated with some of the most amazing smells you'll ever smell... save for maybe the food you make using the spices you buy here. If you need ANY spice, chances are pretty good that you will find it here. The store set up is perfect, there is plenty of room to wander and obsess over the culinary adventures that await your tastebuds! There always seems to be a friendly spice analyst available to answer any questions or to guide you through the store to find exactly what you are looking for. A great way to try a spice or mix you weren't sure about. Friendly staff, always willing to lend a hand and show you new discoveries. Spices come in box sets for great gifts any time of year. Danger Em R.! Danger! Your wallet is about to get lighter! I went to Penzeys Spices during my birthday food shopping extravaganza. It was a worthy stop. They have a wonderful collection of spices, all beautifully arranged in a well appointed store. Their genius? Have a "sampler" container that lets you smell the spices and spice mixes before you buy it. I think it's evil genius, because I ended up buying way more than I was planning to. My only complain is that parking is very limited in that busy part of Buffalo, and that the store is too small (although considering how much I spent, it may have been a good thing). Some of the spices didn't have the variety I can find in other places. But their spice mixes make up for it. Yes it is true that you may find cheaper spices in ethnic stores, but the friendliness of the place, and the smaller packaging available, allows you to grab a small sample of something you never had before to play with and see what you can do. This is what gives Penzeys the edge! read more

This is heaven of spices and priced good, with good customer service it's clean and neat it's not hard to find anything I'll be going back!

I was a bit skeptical of this place and it took me a while to venture in. I have seen these spice shops in other cities and they just seemed cheesy to me. This was because I identified them with the gift sets you can buy there for grilling, salad dressings, and other concoctions. I didn't realize that they actually have a really nice selection of all types of spices and herbs. The prices are quite good too. I like that you can buy different size jars of everything. There are some spices I use so infrequently that they go bad before I can use them up. Here, you can buy smaller jars of that stuff. If you already have a jar to refill, you can buy bags of some of the spices for a considerably lower price than buying a jar. Gripes (i.e. why they didn't get 5 stars): where are the organic options? I also wish they either sold their spices in bulk or sold smaller amounts in the bags. The bags are cheaper because you aren't buying a jar but they hold about 2x what a standard jar does... why not have smaller amounts available that way? read more
