Loved the sign YOU MUST WEAR A MASK to enter the store. Clear and concise you MUST to protect the people who work there and other shoppers. It only makes sense! Penzeys is the "only" store to buy spices at if you are a serious cook/chef. They get the best and provide their customers with the best at reasonable prices. So, walking into Buffalo's Penzey's I knew the quality of my purchase but I was very pleased (once again) with the service and the store. The store's layout encourages "window" shopping and it well designed to help shoppers find what you need. It also allows you to discover something you have never tried all at a really decent price. I have always found the staff to be very knowledgeable and today was no exception. The clerk knew exactly where the item I needed was and was very pleasant to deal with. The challenge for this city-based Penzey's frankly is the parking. On the street parking by meter is a game of cat and mouse. I thought I had a spot but no ... turned the corner and was too quick to pull into the spot on the next residential street. Had to do a big time loop carefully scouting potential locations ... found one on the non-metered side street so I saved my self a few quarters that then went to my purchase.

Best spot for spices!! Sign up for their email list to be sure you know about their specials - they have great gift packs as well as individual spices availability multiple quantities And they have the best politics with spice blends called justice for example!

Wonderful spice store! I found this company because I needed some of their jars for a school project. I am so happy that I was introduced to the wonderful, high end products and inclusive and kind culture that the owner cultivates. The products are a little more expensive than other spice brands but with the discounts it ends up being pretty close in the end. I will say the spices are much better quality than what you get in the grocery store. And they have wonderful custom spice blends which make cooking easy and more fun. There are also premade boxes which have made wonderful and unique gifts for other cooks in my life. This store is still curbside shopping only. You will need to place an order online and choose in store pick up. Once your order is ready you will receive a phone call and arrange a time you are able to pick up. Your order will be placed inside the front door. They are not accepting orders over the phone right now so just go right to the online store. I wasn't aware of this when I went last week but I was lucky that my order was ready in about an hour and I was able to grab after I finished my other errands. Sign up for their emails and you will get discounts and some free spices. I have come across and tried many new things this way. The emails are written by the owner, Bill, who is always optimistic and wishes the best for humanity as a whole. His words are always a highlight and offer a new outlook on some hard days this past year. Some of my favorites are chicken taco blend, bold taco blend, sunny paris, lemon pepper, fox point, chicken soup base, granulated garlic and the list goes on! Don't think you can go wrong here.

My review is for 2 specific seasonings. 1) the Very Hot chilli flakes. I love spicy food and these peppers flake are more spicy than your average red pepper flake but not to the level of habanero or ghost pepper. It adds the additional heat on your dishes (without killing you) and makes a great chilli oil. If you love spicy food - you have to buy these flakes. 2) Fox Point. Everyone has picky kids but my daughter will eat anything with fox point on it..even fish and vegetables. They have so many herbs and spices but I wanted to call out these two! Check Penzeys out - it's an amazing store.

    Yay!

I've never been disappointed at anything from Penzeys. It's a zen place to get great spices and try new ones. There are containers for sniffing if you're unsure whether to try something or not. From ordinary basics to salad bases and cocoa mixes - plus wonderful gifting packages with kitchen goodness in a box with a towel or mug. The flavors are extraordinarily interesting and the associates are so helpful. What's not to love about their message? Love People. Cook them tasty food.

    Always beautiful messages.

I absolutely am obsessed with this spice store. It's like a slice of heaven whenever you stop in it. It smells divine, and I usually end up thinking about all of the things I can make and what I can use each spice for. It's small, in the heart of Elmwood. Parking can be a pain in the butt, but that's to be expected. If you want fresh spices, Penzey's is the place for you. They have some of the best blends, and I particularly like stocking up for the holidays. One of my absolute favorites is the Arizona Dreaming. One named in honor of John McCain.. I also have loved using their cardamon, mace, and various cinnamon for blending herbal teas. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Have never had a terrible experience with anyone there. They have specials often. The owner is very generous, vocal, and political, and many of the spice specials usually tie into a point of discussion or a social justice issue. If that offends you, then it might be an issue, and I guess my advice is focus on the spices because surely we can all agree on how amazing those are. Once I started using them, I couldn't think of going back. You can taste the difference.

OMG stepping into this store is an amazing experience. The aroma of all the different spices is AWESOME! There is a sample of each spice to open and smell. Each one is clearly labeled with the ingredients. I enjoyed walking through and exploring all the different combinations and specialized blends. They were offering a freebie with a limited purchase so I took advantage of that awesome deal and picked up some goodies. I think I managed to get Cinnamon Sugar, Quebec Beef, Garlic and a BBQ blend The customer service was great. The young man and lady working were VERY helpful offering ideas and input. People seemed very comfortable asking questions and getting direction on ideas. I checked the company web site and they offer numerous tips and recipes using the spices. In a time when people are a lot more conscious about what they are eating. I think it is great that this company offers you an authentic product

What happens when Buffalo's finest bartender gets pregnant? We gain Buffalo's finest bartending…read moresupply boutique...and she gets a baby. Win, Win! Perhaps you have noticed in the past several years that the winds of change have been blowing in Western New York mostly in the culinary/mixology realm. Bars in the recent past relied on large-bosomed attractive bartenders who had no idea what the hell a Negroni was, but they could make a hell of a vodka Red Bull. About three years ago that all changed. Bars started utilizing house made syrups and shrubs, bitters and infused oils, and herbs and spices. Bartending in Buffalo was elevated to a high art, where the bartender became more than a good listener (with a nice bosom), but a master of their trade with in depth knowledge of spirits and paired flavors. Drinks were elevated from something that'll get ya drunk, to something to be savored and relished. It is the difference between Red Lobster and the French Laundry, i.e. a Grand Canyon sized chasm. This begs the question from whence did these winds of change originate, and no, the answer is not the Scorpions. While I can go into a long and detailed history, you can read my other reviews for that. Let us just say the conclusion to that historical musing would lead you squarely to Jon Karel, Kerry Quaile, and Zack Mikida...the proprietors of this fine establishment and mixologists extraordinaire (tags I do not use lightly). Should you be one of the fortunate in Western New York to watch any of these three ply their craft you would have noticed a large array of specialized tools at their disposal. Things like Yarai Mixing glasses and Lewis Ice Bags became commonplace, and used for to the delight of the crowd. Watching these three work created a showmanship in a bar not seen since Tom Cruise flipped bottles in Cocktail, which intoxicated (in more ways than one) the viewing audience. However, just like watching the Cooking Channel at home, you learn to demystify that which was previously only the in grasp of a select few. You realize that with some practice and the right tools, you indeed could elevate your home bar and mixology skills, much to the delight of your guests, spouse or house pet. This is where Queen City Shaken & Stirred enters. The aforementioned proprietors decided to help supply and educate the home audience by creating a beautiful boutique on Hertel Avenue (right next to the Sidebar). The classy interior and reclaimed wood theme beautifully accents the inventory of both vintage and state of the art bartending supplies and glassware. On my first visit to the store, I upgraded my jigger and bar spoon, along with a rubber small square ice tray, and some Scrappy's Celery Bitters. However, the pièce(s) de résistance were my three tiki glasses featuring a scowling Fu Manchu, a turquoise mermaid, and the cutest little hula girl (along with the decorative drink umbrellas). While tiki drinks have not made their way into my repertoire up to this point, I'm already studying up on Zombies and Fog Cutters. Mahalo! Which leads to my next point, with Kerry Quaile on hand most of the time (and her very knowledgable staff when she isn't) even if you do not know what you are doing she can teach you. They have a bar set up at the store to teach bartending technique for those unacquainted with the tools of the trade. Not only do they have Buffalo's best hand curated tools and supplies, they have the Queen of Buffalo Mixology (hence the name of the store?) to teach you how to utilize those tools. Boom! There are not enough good things I can write about this boutique since it embodies all that Buffalo stands for. The underlying philosophy is that knowledge is not meant to be hoarded among a select few, but instead shared with all who are willing to learn. It is this post-bousgouise mind-set that has and will continue to ignite the fires of growth and prosperity in the Queen City by significantly upgrading our cultural infrastructure. Buffalo is going through a renaissance and this boutique is yet another manifestation. Queen City Shaken & Stirred is a unique opportunity to learn from the best and be part of that renaissance. Take me to the magic of the moment On a glory night Where the children of tomorrow dream away...in the winds of change

If you eat seasonally and value keeping your money in the local community, this is a great place to do both. Things I love: Great deals on seasonal produce, especially for members (I signed up on my second visit and boy is membership worth it!). High quality meats. Plenty of locally grown and made options with clear signage. The bulk section is especially great - bring your own containers and you can get some excellent savings on dried fruits, grains, rice, nuts, candies, beans, spices, loose-leaf tea, and more. Sometimes they do tasting days where you can try samples of the pre-made food items. Non-food things: Staff is all friendly and helpful. Parking is easy. They have an electric vehicle charging station in the lot. There is a "little free library" style shelf at the front to share books; there's always new stuff to read and often a selection of cookbooks to try out. Some prices are higher than at other stores so I do shop in multiple places depending on my list. For anything I want in bulk, local, or organic, this is where I get it.
