An absolute must do tourist attraction when in Waterford. Who else grew up with your parents or…read moregrandparents idolizing their Waterford Crystal pieces? As an adult I can't tell you how fun it was to add this attraction to our Ireland list of stops. We opted for a full paid tour of the Waterford Crystal factory and it was amazing. Something different and unique. The tour is lead by a guide and it was nice that they didn't seem to overbook the tour slots. We were a group of about 20 and they spaced us out well between other tours. We were able to see the process from start to finish and the tour was about an hour long. Super great photography and videos of the men working the factory and actually using the old school machines to cut the glass, etc. Some of it is obsolete/historical, but they do the old-school craft measures for the sake of the tour. I loved that towards the end you were able to see completed pieces and unique crystals. A little nod to my hometown as they had some crystal made for the Santa Anita racetrack, super cool! A little piece of LA even all of the way in Ireland. We ended the tour by going through their vast store / gift shop which is open to the public if you don't want to pay for the tour. But really the tour is where it's at. The store was cool as they had a lot of fancy and unique pieces but nothing that I'd really get to travel with and a bit pricey for souvenirs. This was definitely a great tour and overall place to visit when in Waterford - 10/10 would recommend.

While it's not my particular style, I can appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into these pieces-especially now that I've toured the facility and got to see firsthand how they are made. It was astonishing to me that tour groups can walk along the factory lines and be up close (close enough to touch and/or break!) the crystal workings. We observed the crystal blowing (very similar to glass blowing-it's mesmerizing to watch) and then followed the pieces through their journeys where they are marked, etched, polished and quality checked along the way. Impressive? Absolutely! At the end, you land in the store area where you can admire, and purchase, finished products. They were a bit out of my price range, but it was fun to see them on display. If you really like your pet, you can buy crystal dog bowls for what most of us pay a month in housing. Also of note, the bar on the far end is worth a visit. You can order a drink and it will be served in genuine Waterford stemware. So you can try "brand in hand" as the bartender said. Smart.
