It was my first time at Penn & Beech in Carmel and the experience was quite relaxing yet a little stressful. Relaxing because I was able to go at my own pace with the help of the knowledgeable staff to select up to 4-5 scents out of over 100 scents to add into my "pour your own experience" candle. Stressful because, how do I narrow down my selection of scents to use and what matches good with each other?! But I made it work. I think i found one of my favorite local spots for self-care time. The space is bright and welcoming, and smells amazing as soon as you walk in. It's perfect for a date night or small gathering. Plus, the candles are high quality with lots of different "vessels" to choose from that range in price value. Or fun thing to know, you can bring in your own vessel to use. One of my favorite parts was stirring up the candle to mix the scents to my liking, felt like a chemist without the labcoat though...goof times. We just went here for a girls night and it was so fun. I made wax melts and my friends made candles. It was so fun choosing our scents and smelling the different candles. I think we had even more fun smelling the oils once they brought us the ones we were considering using. Then me and my friends were all changing scents and smelling each others, really fun. The service was great, our server was really sweet and helpful. The value for what you get is good. My wax melts I got 6 and they were $19 to make. Made a reservation for 11:30am during Fall Break. There is a parking garage right next to Penn and Beech. My daughter and I arrived around 11:35am (I missed the parking garage and had to circle back,lol). There was no other guest in there and 2 employees who were very welcoming The girl explained the process with clear directions to follow. My daughter and I picked our seats and the candle making began. Picked our scents and pored the wax into our chosen glassware. I absolutely love this place!!! If you are a candle lover, this is something you have to do at least once.

This was such a fun outing! I really enjoyed making the candles. There are so many different scents to choose from and the staff will help you narrow them down and find things that work well together in the candle. I enjoy crafts and hands-on activities so this was great, and of course you get a nice, high quality candle to take home within just a few hours (or you can come by anytime within a week or so to pick it up if you aren't available same day). The only downside is that there isn't a large selection of candle receptacles, and they are all branded with a huge Penn & Beech logo. Other candle making shops give more options for this and the receptacles are unique and a lot cuter than at P&B. The trade off is that P&B has the larger selection of scents. They also have beverages for purchase which is a nice touch. read more

What a wonderful experience we had here! It was a gloomy drizzling cold day in Indiana and we decided to do something warm and fun indoors. The interior is beautiful and it smells like heaven once you step foot inside. We made an appointment two days before and I would highly recommend doing an appointment, because when we showed up on Monday, people were waiting at the doors! Once inside, they let you sniff all of the fragrances they have and you write down your top three, then you choose a vessel to put your candle in. They offer a variety of drinks and wine you can enjoy during your candle making experience. Once you have chosen you top three scents, the consultant then comes over and helps show you how to combine scents and what works best with each other. It was such a fun process I felt like I was making my own little concoction. We pored our candles and then they take 2 hours to set up after your appointment and then you can come pick them up. Even the bathrooms were gorgeous and smelled wonderful. Overall a really unique and different experience that I had a great time doing. Will have to go back again once this candle is all burned out. read more

The set up was like a community table, but the couples we were with were so nice and our candle expert, Mikayla, was so educated on the process and overall wonderful. This place is a great way to spend an hour for a fun get together with friends. It is a cozy atmosphere (and, obviously, smells fantastic). They also have a few drinks that you can order while you are creating your scent and pouring your candle. This location is also close to a bunch of restaurants, Java House, Sun King, and more so you will find plenty to do while your candles are curing if you want to do a same day pick-up. I have to admit I was not all that thrilled to go make candles. I was pleasantly surprised, and had a wonderful time. It's a little bit overwhelming from the sense of smell standpoint, but the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. They guide you through the entire process of identifying senses that appeal to you and pairing those together to make a candle unique to you. You can also sip on some wine, a seltzer or a beer while crafting your candle. We came with a group of 6 and all had a good time. Price points vary from $18 to $50 depending on size and container you choose. I would recommend for tweens on up to adults of all ages. read more

This was a very fun experience - I had never done anything like it before! When you go in, they start off by giving you a paper to record favorite scents and telling you to go explore all of their options. We probably spent at least 15 minutes sniffing every single candle scent option! Then you bring your favorites to the employees and they help you pick a couple that will work well together. Once you've decided on your scents, you measure them out to the balance that you want, and mix the oil together with the hot wax. You get to pick your candle vessel too, which affects your price, if you get a smaller size candle, the price for it and the whole experience really isn't that crazy. After 2 hours minimum wait time, you walk away with a delightful smelling candle and a fun experience! read more

My daughter made reservations at Penn & Beech in Carmel for four to enjoy making candles for my wife's birthday. Grandpa was invited as part of the four. Didn't know how I would like this experience. But it turned out creating a personal scented candle with your wife, daughter and granddaughter was a very memorable and amazing experience. I enjoyed sampling scents with my granddaughter and she even insisted I chose one of her three scents for her candle. Our host and coach, Trevor was very pleasant and informative in creating a unique, but pleasing scented personal candle. We were not rushed in any way during the process, even when deciding on our final scents! We were served and guided with such patience. Penn & Beech is really close to my office and I had not been in here to check it out. Our department had a small Christmas gathering here yesterday afternoon to make candles and it was REALLY cool! You walk in the doors and it smells amazing in there. There are tables at up so it almost has a cozy bar feeling to it. We were instructed to take our sheet of paper that's at the table and smell the wall of scents and write down the scents that we liked the best. The wall of scent candles has a big variety of scents to choose from, everything from old library books to coffee to gardenia. Once we picked our scents you are asked to pick a vessel for your candle. The vessel is what you're going to pour your wax in once you're finished. An employee then comes over and takes a look at the scents you have written down and they pick out 2-3 that will go together well. The employee brings over bottles that contain the oils and you smell them and see if you like the scents together. If you do like them you are instructed to start slowly adding the oils to your higher and continue to stir and smell so your oil mixture smells exactly how you want your candle to smell. Once your jigger is full, the employee brings over hot wax and you pour your oil in and stir that up really well and then you pour the wax into your vessel. They also give you a sticker to name your candle which I thought was neat. The candle has to set up for a couple of hours and then it's ready for you to come back and pick up. You can re-use your vessel to fill it back up with wax for a new candle. It was a fun process and also very interesting. The group I was with all chose very different scent combinations and the candle all smelled really great. read more

I've been to both this location and Mass Ave location so many times with friends and my husband. It's a really fun way to spend time with others that's not the typical restaurant, bar or brewery. But, really easy to combine with any of those, especially at the Carmel location. Picking scents can be super overwhelming because they have so many to consider. I suggest checking out some scents you'd never heard before, such as agave, olive blossom or bonsai. It's easy to get confused, but the friendly associates can help you narrow down to 2-4 to blend for your candle. They offer quite a few vessels to put your candle in, and they bring in new sizes, shapes and colors here and there. I had a headache after being inside for about an hour because all the smells were so overwhelming. They have different jars you can choose from with a variety of styles and sizes. This was a great activity to do with my little. The shop was very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It is located right off of the Monon Trail. There is limited free street parking available and there are a couple of free parking garages in a very reasonable walking distance. In addition to candles, the shop offers beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. So, you can get the party jumping while making your candle. They have a bunch of candles along the wall in a bunch of different fragrances. You can buy them as is or you can use them to make your own from one or more of your favorite fragrances. The staff was very helpful in giving us ideas of fragrances that went well together. I went with bubble gum and water melon. My little went with dark chocolate, and whipped cream. Once you get your fragrance or fragrances you then choose the vessel that the candle will be made in. They range from $22 to $50. Once it is selected, the staff bring you your fragrance oils that you selected and you start mixing them. After they are mixed, you pour it into a beaker of melted wax and stir it up for a few minutes. Finally, you pour the fragranced wax into the vessel that you selected and the staff take it to sit. I was in the shop about 30 to 40 minutes from walking into the door to getting in my car. Setting takes about 2 hours, but they can hold your candle for up to two weeks if you can not make it back at that time. I just took my little to a nearby park and to eat some lunch and by the time we got back, the candles were bagged up and ready to go. It took less than 5 minutes for the pick-up. This is a nice and fun thing to do once in a while, but it is a bit on the pricey end for a candle, but the prices are not hidden. I would also suggest to be carful getting the oil on you hand. It does not was off very easily and you will be smelling that scent for a couple of days until it wears off. You can also make reservations. I did it directly through Yelp, but it was not needed though while I was there because there were only 3 other people. They have set ups for about 25 candle makers between the bar seating and 3 tables. My little really enjoyed making the candle and could not wait to get the candle home to show her brother. This is a unique experience that allows you to create something of your own and see and smell the fruits of your labor. I am glad that I did it. FYI: You cannot put a tip on your card. If you want to tip any of the staff that assisted you, you have to do it in cash. Just throwing it out there because the staff is top notch and you will probably want to show your appreciation. read more

I visited on a Friday night as a team-building event with a group of 12 girls I volunteer with. The store was packed when we arrived, but we had a reservation, and our tables were ready for us soon after we arrived. We were given a clipboard and pen and invited to smell all the scents and jot down our favorites. At that point, we returned to the table to narrow it down and start mixing. They brought bottles of all the oils and we passed them around, smelling different combos. One of the girls in our group told our consultant that she preferred fall scents and they even brought out a small bottle of pumpkin spice oil from the back room. I knew mine was going to be tropical, so those were the scents I stuck with. After blending my jigger full of oils, I was nervous because my candle didn't smell as yummy as I imagined it would. Fortunately, when we picked up our finished candles the next day, it had mellowed out and smells wonderful! It was one of the basic jars, but our consultant said it would last up to 60 hours! Our service was excellent. Although our group was easily taking up half the store for about 2 hours, we were never rushed, and no one was pushy about drinks or upgrades. RUINED MY NIGHT! So, some backstory, I love Penn & Beech. Have been a fan from the beginning. I follow them on social media. I go out of my way to drive over and purchase their seasonal candles. I've poured candles at the Mass Ave location before. I was sad that the Valentine's pink holder was for pour your own only and I didn't have time to get in that weekend so I called, and they said they'd pour one for me if I told them the scents. Anyway, we go back a long way. I've bought all my friends and family candles from here for Christmas before. I support local and I'm a fan. Continuing on...I had a friend visiting me last weekend from out of state. I planned a "Best of Carmel" night out and made a reservation for 7:30 last Saturday night. Of note, I've gone in without a reservation before and had no problems getting in, but I played it safe and made one. It was a Saturday night and it took me a couple minutes to find parking and I honestly wasn't rushing so we walked in at 7:46pm. When we checked in, the host said she wouldn't fulfill our reservation because we were 1 minute past the "grace period." I apologized. No dice. I said, "Well, it said it would take an hour-ish to pour so we'll hurry and be done in 40 minutes so you'll still be on time for the next people." She said, "No, we don't have the staff to do that anymore." So in one minute you sent home staff for the night?? I said, "Well, can you just take us as a walk-in?" Her: "No." I should have asked to talk to a manager or something, but I was so confused and frustrated and embarrassed. I didn't see anything about the 15-minute grace period on my confirmation text. They didn't call or anything to ask if I was on my way. And I get it, people need to run on time. But I offered to still spend the same amount of money in a shorter period of time and was denied the opportunity. And it was legit 1 minute past the grace period. I'm sorry I was late. But is there any room for some compassion and just be nice to a tired mom who was trying to plan something nice? So then I had nothing to do in Carmel until our next reservation because all the other stores close at 8pm. My friend was so disappointed. I felt terrible. The host was SO RUDE and condescending. The space wasn't even that busy and the supplies were already set out at the tables. It was the worst. So, lesson learned: Penn & Beech does not want my money. I was bringing some other mom friends here next month but will cancel now. I don't like being treated so rudely and it's left a very bad taste in my mouth for what used to be my favorite local candle spot. read more
