This course is great for a quick round. This is a city course so it's maintained well and fun to play. I play this course once a week and it's in a great location. If you want a faster pace of play, you'll have to book between 7 AM and 9 AM. Anything after that is a little bit slower. The only reason I gave this four stars and not five stars is because they do have you play with five people which isn't the best. If they let you play with just four people then this course would be five stars. read more

Booked a twosome yesterday, our time was 3:50, went to the first tee around 3:45 and there were about 5 groups waiting to tee off ahead of us. We finally tee'd off around 4:20, but ended up playing as a group of 7 because there were so many people waiting. Also-3 of them were playing out of one bag, which I thought wasn't allowed (according to multiple other reviews). Even as a group of 7, we were still finishing each hole in about 10-15 minutes but were waiting 25+ minutes on each hole to tee off. There was no Marshall or starter to structure things. We were on the course for 2+ hours and only got through 5 holes so we ended up leaving. The only plus side was that the course is in really good condition and they had decent rental clubs for only $10 (although the clubs looked like they hadn't been cleaned in months.) Do not recommend playing here on a weekend as there as it is absolute chaos! Honestly wish we had asked for a raincheck or refund because $30 per person was not worth it at all. read more

The squirrels here have evolved to the point that they know how to open golf bags to search for food. Unfortunately, they usually bite through the zipper closures whether there is food or not causing costly damage. Keep your bag close by to keep an eye on it. read more

They will not allow a couple or family of 3 to share a golf bag. There is zero flexibility on that. I am older and planned to never get more than a five at any hole, but wanted to participate and we were not allowed to play unless we paid ten dollars to rent a bag. The whole experience was really upsetting and I felt harrassed. You'd think they could be nicer to an older lady who wanted one nice day outside. It really felt bad and wrong to be turned away and yet the cigar smokers are not turned away. Just gave me that sinking ick vibe. read more

Penmar Golf Course - Hole 2 - Golf Near Me - Venice, California

We had a great experience playing 9 holes yesterday at Penmar. 5:40 tee time, but due to putting 5 people in each group, they were running about 10 minutes behind schedule. Additionally, the group that was two ahead of us was playing well behind the pace. We had plenty of time to work on chipping and putting while we waited for them to clear each hole. The group behind us eventually circled back and replayed holes 1-3 instead of sticking it out. Most of the tee boxes were roped off for maintenance, and the tees were slightly ahead of where they would usually be. The fairways, bunkers, and greens were all in good condition. Every hole is pretty much a straight shot, so this is a great course for beginners and casual golfers. On the 6th tee, you can order drinks to be delivered to a box next to the 6th green. I placed an order, but it wasn't in the box when we got to the green 7-8 minutes later. I called the restaurant and they said they never received an order. They offered to meet us at the green with the drinks, and 3 minutes later we were restocked. I did need to call the next morning to get the original order refunded, which they handled cheerfully and promptly. I like that Toast sends you receipts to your email so you have them when things like this occur. Due to the slow pace, we played #8 and #9 with barely enough daylight to see. I'm amazed none of us lost a ball. Parking was easy in the lot out front, and we had a bite to eat before the round at the restaurant. Overall, the two of us spent about $100 on food and drinks before (and during) the round, and $11 each for our golf. We look forward to returning. read more

It's quite lengthy in distance for some of the holes and a bit more intimidating for.a beginner like myself to do without many swings. An executive par 3 with some holes as lengthy as an 18 hole in distance. There was also dry, mud streaks and bald patches with little to no greens on them. It's quite flat so that's what I liked, I also liked how there were water fountains on some of the holes. Since it's in the middle of the city, it was perfect for a sunny, warm day for playing. The place also has some parts where you can see the street and cars parted by a chain link fence. Not a good par 3 for a beginner, I would start with shorter length par 3 before coming here or save this one for last. Remember that it's an executive not a regular par 3. Been here twice. First, adjust your expectations. It's a local muni to knock it around for nine holes. It's not a challenging course. I walked-on, played with some nice people. A couple long holes and a lot of short par 3s. So the golf itself is pretty so-so. However, it's a super cool place with two large putting greens and a very nice restaurant and bar for people watching. I'm not from here but it seems like it's a real community center of sorts. The guy at the front who you check in with is a real salty person. Maybe the most inconsiderate horrible starter I've ever dealt with. I knew he was like this but this last time just did it. We were invited by a friend who made the teatime, we gave his name at the time he gave us, but apparently it was 10 minutes off. But what does the starter do? Says nope wrong time try again. We didn't know the time so I said well better wait for your friend. And then at the end when we gave him the right time he said so you know how is that so hard. I'm pretty upset after my experience here. New to LA and wanted to play some golf. Went to set up a tee time with my boyfriend and the worker asked him if I was going to play because "most girls who come with their guys just caddie and don't want to play" we let him know I was planning to play and that was that. When we came back for our tee time it was a different worker and we set up our time and we're waiting on the box for the group ahead of us to finish up when he came storming up and raised his voice for all the practicing putters to hear to tell us we had to go, when I finally cut in to tell him we were waiting so we didn't hit the group ahead he goes "oh are you really going to hit it 300 yards?!" My boyfriend goes I might and the worker goes ok but what about her?! I felt so disrespected. Honestly it just hurt, the misogyny I experienced not just once on this course. It ruined my game. Afterwards when we approached him to let him know we didn't appreciate the way he came at us he laughed and said sorry that we took it that way.... Maybe I just got lucky but on Saturday evening, I went online, booked a tee time for 2 for the next day (Sunday at 9:12am) and paid a $10 deposit to lock up a prime tee time. Got to the course expecting it to be a ragged muni dump but was pleasantly surprised to see a young lady in the parking lot with an orange vest picking up trash at the course and neighboring tennis courts. There were a few homeless people sleeping in the park nearby (Venice has quite a large homeless population, many of whom a war vets) but it didn't feel unsafe. Try to park as close to the entrance as possible and just be aware of your surroundings and get in/out of the parking lot quickly. No stars off for the area though because it is what it is. Went up to the starter to check in with my friend who is a newbie to golf and wants the next level of course up from par 3 only courses. We said we were here for our 9:12am tee time and he said we could go off early if we wanted. My friend needed to warm up a little (there is no driving range so warmup was just putting, stretching and putting sunblock on) so we kept to our regular tee time. They applied the $10 deposit to our greens fees and it was about $20 each since we didn't have residence cards. Not bad for prime time weekend morning. Turns out Penmar is PERFECT for my friend who is wanting to step up to more than just short par 3s. I'm about a 9 handicap and found it to be easy (wide open fairways) and shot +2 for nine playing so so. Penmar has shallow and sparse traps and BIG flat soft poa annua greens that rolled good, but if you get in the kikuyu rough (same as almost all So Cal courses) it can be a challenge to hit the green. Trees line the fairways and can sometimes knock a hooked or sliced shot back into play. For long hitters there are lots of driver/flip wedge holes or you can layup to 100 and practice your course management. We were grouped up with two greats guys (one Indian and the other Australian) and they were local regulars who were super friendly and gave us little bits of local knowledge. We played 9 holes in just over 2 hours (2 hours and 5 min by my watch) and had so much fun. I was shocked in the current drought state we are in that they have kept the course so nice. I had just played Chambers Bay (2015 US Open course) and after being beat up relentlessly by that course, it was great to get out to a nice, fun, flat and easy but not completely defenseless muni that was an easy drive from Long Beach for me and from the Westside for my friend. Another great thing about this little muni is that it has an actual SCGA slope and rating so the scores can actually count towards establishing your handicap, unlike many other executive courses in so cal. read more

Penmar is a well maintained 9 hole course. The course is your generic American woodland course. A few bunkers, no water hazards. Long course and not for the hackers. One par 4 hole is 452 yards. Some people have written reviews saying that this course is for beginners. I disagree. You need to consistently hit the ball off the tee 200 yards before you play here. Nearby Rancho Park par 3 is more of a beginners course. 4 star course, but 3 stars because it is so busy. I went out early (it was literally still dark) my round took just over 2 hours. If you play after 8am, you are looking at a 3+ hour round of 9 holes. When I finished my round about 8.45am on a Saturday - there seemed to be 20-30 people milling around and waiting to start. read more

Slow because it is all of us hackers taking a long time and playing slow. And the Seniors in the 5-some ahead of us/you are moving at about the pace of a sloth. All that said... - Value for the golfing fee = 5 Stars - Challenge of the course = 3 Stars - Forgiveness for the amateur golfer = 5 Stars - Values for Cafe (beer and sandwich) = 4.5 Stars In the end if you are a very good golfer get an early (dawn) Tee time to have a nice quick round. If you are a hacker (like most of us) get out there for a nice fun (if slow) walk in the park. suggestion... It is Penmar, do NOT over read the greens. They are Flatter than you think. There is very little break anywhere on the course. Fun Note: went out on a twilight round and we found a wild fox sitting next to the first green. We gave him plenty of room. He successfully staked out a hole in the grass and got a small critter after we played through. Really cool that real wilderness can still be found here in the city. My favorite challenge is the 3rd hole. Where the cross wind from the ocean can make getting on the green a real interesting approach. It is a short par 3 and winds above the treeline can be strong. Have fun. Walk with your light carry bag or rent a hand cart for a couple of bucks. Try not to feed the squirrels. The cheeky buggers will rip into your golf bag to steal your snacks! Love going here for a small round of golf...it definelty beats going to the driving range and hitting off mats. The people that play here are from all skill levels and the course mostly does 5 Somes so pace of play is not that great on the weekends. During the weekday you should be fine to finish as long as you start around 4:30 pm. Greens are more on the slow side but maintained pretty well as is the fairway. I would give this place zero stars if I could. Possibly the worst service of my life. The grumpy old man at the counter ruined our experience at this course and in my opinion should not be working with humans of any kind. He scolded and berated us for being 37 seconds late to the window for check-in after the we had arrived 20 minutes early. First of all, don't bring your girlfriend here. Second of all, just don't come here. Misogyny and abysmal customer service to be found. My girlfriend wanted to play golf so we decided to go to this course (it's the closest one to us). We walk up to the counter and ask for a tee time. Immediately, the guy starts barking at me that "she", pointing to my girlfriend, has to pay, too. That she can't, "just expect to walk around, watch, or caddy for free." Ok, first of all dude, my girlfriend could be on the LPGA tour, for all you know. Second of all, it was my girlfriend's idea to play. Don't start jumping down our throats assuming she won't play because she is a girl. We set up a tee-time for the evening. We leave and arrive again later for our tee-time. There is a different worker at the desk. "Hopefully, this guy is cooler", I think to myself. Wrong! We are waiting at the first tee box for the foursome ahead of us to finish. The length to the first hole is roughly 270 yards, easily makable for me. While the other foursome are on the green this other worker comes storming out to us. Fuming, he's says, "oh, y'all are just going to hold everyone up now!?". I say, "we are waiting for them to finish." Then, full of attitude, he says, "oh, so you can hit it 300 yards?!" I'm like, "um, yeah I can, I plan on hitting it to the green." Then he goes, "well, can she?!" Unbelievable. Then he keeps blabbering on about us holding everyone up while my girlfriend is trying to tee, literally holding us, and everyone else, up more than if he just had left us alone from the beginning. I hit to the green, of course. Good thing we waited. We continue to play the round, angry the entire time. After our round, I had to say something to the guy. I calmly mention, that we didn't appreciate how he talked to us. He immediately gets defensive. Full of attitude he says, " I didn't" and "sorry you took it that way". I'm like, "sorry I took it that way?! No! Apologize for talking to us like that." Anyway, he doesn't. It keeps going on for a bit, the guy just continues to be a massive jerk, and we just leave. Some absolutely landmark terrible customer service and misogyny were experienced, for my girlfriend and I, at this golf course. I have never experienced anything quite like this before. I booked a tee time here two days ago for myself and two friends. We were put into a five-some with a man and a woman, which we expected to be. What we didn't expect was to be harassed and threatened by the woman from the moment we met on the first tee. She was absolutely horrible, and acted insane. She threatened to hit us, and had a nasty comment after each of us teed off. It was so scary we didn't even finish the first hole. We walked back to the Starter and told him what happened, I asked for a refund or if I could reschedule and not be in that woman's group. He said no to both options. So essentially I spent $50 for my friends and I to swing our clubs one time. Do yourself a favor and go to Rancho Park Golf Course. It's a nice course and they care for the safety of their guests, unlike Penmar. read more

MIKE, i believe is his name, is the biggest jerk i have ever met. Super rude on the phone and incredibly unprofessional. I was traveling from canada and wanted to pay with my debit card. I told him i needed to enter my pin number. He said my card was declined (it needed the pin entered he was too old and blind to see that). So i give him my credit card, which again requires a pin. He says its was declined and began to swear at us. My partner then gives his american card to pay, which he was reluctant to try on his machine. MIKE, the oh some charming starter, decides to then tell other customers that i presented him two declined credits cards. I was appalled at his lack of professionalism as this was not the case. Overall, course is fun and people you meet are fun too. STARTERS RUIN THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE AND MIKE SHOULD LOSE HIS JOB OR GET LAID. i love old people but this guy is a waste of space. read more

Great service and quick to add a single golfer to a tee time. I had a great group and friendly setting. I wish they had 18 holes, but at least the 9 hole is decent for a golfer to work on some skills. The course is fresh with some driver tee shots. I hope they keep and maintain the course. I wish they would relocate the homeless on hole three. I feel sorry for them, but the course and housing community suffers with their yelling and shouting. Please help maintain the surroundings. Unfortunately I can not write a review about the actual course due to the miserable creature who looks like he's been sitting at the front desk since the course opened in 1942. We showed up for our 5:30 tee time excited to get in 9 holes! Sign up at the front mentioned a $55 yearly membership which the two of us were ready to purchase.... Wait, not so fast! We were rudely greeted, if you can call it that, by angry Al (made up name). He snarled and asked if we both had clubs, which we did not because one of us is a beginner and hasn't purchase clubs yet. We were told we could not share clubs. When we asked why not (because we had done it before) he snapped it was the rules of golf. I find it odd that this "starter course" would not allow that. I was unaware we were golfing with Jordan Spieth at Penmar.... For the record I was at pelican hill last week and people did share clubs. There was absolutely no reason for him to be so arrogant and rude. Why would I spend my money there when a simple "I am sorry ladies unfortunately our course does not allow that" would have been a perfectly acceptable answer. Penmar you should really give your employees a reality check, they are guarding a golf course not the pentagon. read more

No one has reviewed Penmar? I am a big fan of this golf course. It is only nine holes and there are no electric carts to shuttle your lazy ass around. The best thing is: you can play nine holes, carrying your clubs and you'll feel like you've done enough healthy stuff to warrant a stop at The Counter for burger lunch. Win, win! It is not fancy. Or long. But they keep the course and the greens in better shape than some other LA County courses that I have played (yes, Roosevelt, I'm talking to you). I just wish there was a full-fledged driving range here too. It also can be fun to watch the planes taking off from Santa Monica airport directly overhead. Just don't be mad when the engines on Tom Cruise's antique plane cause you to duff a drive! I almost forgot! It is only $15 for a round of golf. Yes, you heard me. $15 per person for 9 holes of golf.
