I visited Dr. Shih in May 2025 after an X-ray revealed a shadow on my tooth. He quickly identified the root cause and performed root canal that was both quick and elegant. One year later, I have had no issues, and both my dental dentists in the US and Taiwan have commented that the root canal was done perfectly - they were not the ones who referred me to Dr. Shih. I have had a hard time working with the billing and medical assistant staff. They had sent the wrong codes to my insurance which has caused a several months delay to close out the claim even with my clear communication with them and my insurance. I have had to for months mediate for both parties and we have yet come to a conclusion for the claim. I keep receiving monthly bills for the charges with the wrong codes and have to reach back out because they will try and charge me interest even the claim is still open and it was an error on their part for the wrong codes. My insurance also overpaid them and now they want to keep it as interest when prior they told me while the claim is open they would not charge the interest. Also denying that they offered waving the interest charge as a courtesy for their error. They have not been helpful through this process. read more

I've had teeth problems my whole life and have seen numerous dentists in my time. Recently I have had to get 7 root canals (I was bulimic in my youth and many of my molars were decayed) and for each and every one I have gladly driven to Mountain View to see Dr Kingstone Shih at Peninsula Endodontic Group. My dentist referred him to me and described him as "A NINJA IN YOUR MOUTH". And they were right! Dr Shih has caused me less pain than any other dentist I have ever seen. He's extremely quick and deft with his hands. I literally have no more fear about getting root canals because he has now proven to me seven times now how unpainful and quick they can be if done right. At first I thought it was wild that Dr Shih only does root canals (I can't believe there are that many people who constantly need them!) but he's proven to me that that's the very reason you should go to him. Dr. Shih was a referral from a close friend in the Bay Area. I had been living in Hawaii the last 10 years, and was dealing with an existing root canal that either required a rework or extraction/implant issue on my #30. After some back and forth between my Hawaii Dentist, Endodonist and Periodontist for last several months, they had recommended extraction and implant. I decided to get a second opinion (to save my tooth) by scheduling a consultation with Dr. Shih, during my holiday vacation back home in the Bay Area. I have had several root canals done by Dr.Shih over the past 15 years. He's kind, patient and very professional. His injections are painless and he makes sure you have enough Novacaine so as you're not feeling any pain while he's doing the work. I have felt more pain just going to a regular dentist to have a tooth filled. Dr Shih even calls me the next day to check up on me and make sure I'm OK as I have severe TMJ issues. I was super nervous because the tooth is so tiny, but Dr. Shih reassured me that everything would be fine and I would be on my way in no time. He numbed my tooth and I was out of the office in about 40 minutes. After the initial shot, it was painless! He worked very well with his assistant Genia. Each time Dr. Shih and his staff were ALWAYS friendly, courteous and professional. In the midst of a troubling situation with my teeth, he and his staff always make the ENTIRE process as painless as can be (both physically and emotionally!). Wendy always takes care of identifying the insurance carrier's part of the billing and sets up the appointment as quickly as possible. I'm actually saying these two individuals that gave me an emergency root canal are on top of their game. Prompt, professional, polite, courteous, very comforting, knowledgeable, experts in their field. Peninsula Endodontic Group is amazing! I am generally terrified of seeing the dentist and was on a downhill spiral with severe tooth/nerve pain that had been ongoing for 4-6 weeks despite a large handful of visits to my dentist and some new fillings. When I switched dentists for a second opinion, I was referred to PEG for a consultation. I had not one but TWO root canals done one month apart by Dr. Shih. I felt very calm and comfortable in the office and Dr. Shih took the time to explain everything to me and to make certain I needed each root canal. In fact, the second root canal was a wait-and-see thing that unfortunately didn't go away. Dr. Shih is very calm and professional and efficient. I think each root canal averaged 45 minutes and they were less stressful to me than getting cavities or crowns because there is very minimal drilling which I hate. I even got a call from Dr. Shih after the second root canal to see how I was doing. Wendy at the front desk is also stellar and almost made me forget that I was about to have a root canal! read more

Dr. Shih and his staff are amazing! I was referred here by my dentist, Dr. Michael Maher (who has been my dentist for over 25 years). When I called my dentist and explained the situation they immediately booked me into an 8 a.m. slot with Dr. Shih for the next day. I was in such pain that it was difficult for me to tell which tooth was actually infected. Dr. Shih did some simple tests and confirmed that my #15 tooth was indeed on it's last nerve - so to speak. He explained the procedure and gave me shots to numb the pain before commencing. His dental hygenist and office staff were kind, comforting, and very sweet. It took him only one hour to complete the work and told me intermittently what he was doing in my mouth. I found that a comfort. Unfortunately I was in such pain the next day that I followed up with Wendy, his receptionist and public relations person extraordinaire. They wanted me back in immediately because I was still having sensitivity but on #14. I asked to wait it out a day because I know the clamps could be hard on the gums and it is a small, but extensive, procedure. She accommodated and they offered to call in some medication to help with swelling/pain. Sure enough I phoned late in the afternoon to say I knew I needed another root canal and, bless their heart, they got me in at 9:00 today. Dr. Shih explained something called the "Gate Theory" which relates to nerve pain. Apparently the body cannot process all sources of pain when it is that intense and so the one that is the worst will take over, so to speak, until that source is eradicated. Then, the other pain will surface in the location that is also infected. That is why we could not tell both teeth required root canals. Plus, conservatively and wisely, he did not want to perform an unnecessary procedure on a second tooth. He fixed me up again this morning and sent me on my way. There is no kind of pain like tooth pain and an infected or dead tooth. Dr. Shih was kind, skilled, and swift with assisting me and I really appreciated how comforting his staff was with me. I will not be going anywhere else if I need another root canal. Although root canals are expensive without insurance, it is something that must be done. They offered a payment plan or a slight reduction for full payment at time of service. I appreciated the candor and wanted to make sure I got it taken care of, and him paid, ASAP, because he and his staff earned it. Thanks Dr. Shih and staff! Fantastic. I've had to get work done by both Dr. Shih and Dr. Hernandez. Both are extremely professional and did a wonderful job. Most recently I had surgery to fix an infection that just wasn't clearing up via a root canal. I was especially pleased with Dr. Hernandez. She explained everything, made sure during the procedure that I was comfortable at all times, answered all my questions without ever making me feel rushed (or that it was a silly question) and even gave me her cell phone number after in case I had a problem. The office staff was really nice, too, and helpful. It didn't seem like the costs were any different that other endodontists that I have been to before (in another state). So Dr. Shih isn't the cheapest dentist (endodontist?) you can find, but that's ok. I had a root canal performed in Seattle when I was working out there, and that went horribly wrong. Dr. Shih had me in and out within an hour; pretty short for how long I thought it would take. Good guy, and pretty close to where I live. Just had an amazing first root canal experience (sounds crazy right?) with Dr. Shih!!! Only took 1 hour and I almost fell asleep a few times. I broke a tooth at 7am one morning. The tooth was right in front and had a crown. It broke off right at the gum line. Fortunately the root was still OK. Dr Shih got me right in and did a root canal and got the crown back on and I was good as new in 45 minutes. This guy is my ultimate hero! I had no pain, no after effects. Watching his assistant hand Dr Shih instruments was like watching a surgery. Fast and efficient. Root canals is what they do all day, and they are really really good at it. He was willing to either explain what he was doing all through, or not. I chose "not" but am not only happy with the outcome, but sincerely am grateful and highly recommend this place. If your kid is hit with a baseball and breaks teeth, rush them to Dr Shih. When I left with my nice new smile, kids were arriving. read more

I will NEVER go back to Dr. Hernandez. I had two awful experiences with her. The first was a 2nd root canal treatment for a reinfected tooth, and the second was for the sutures left from said procedure. These procedures were PAINFUL. For my first root canal with her, she tried to go through the top of my tooth. She couldn't access that infected root, so I had to go back days later for surgery through my gum line. Surgery took over three hours. Her hands shook injecting the Novocaine, during the surgery, and sewing the sutures. They were shaking so much, that she made my lips shake with her. And during the three hours of sitting there with my mouth wide open, she hardly explained what she was doing to me and my gums. When all was done, I got a bag with mouthwash and instructions. I was NEVER told to go back to my dentist to have the top of my tooth refilled. There was no paperwork stating I had to go back to my dentist either, so I never went back. There was no phone call to check on me, just a postcard sent months later, stating I need to call for a followup exam. Six months after surgery, I went for my followup exam. I had one suture left in my lower gum line. She pulled at the suture without numbing it for about 5 minutes. I told her it hurt. She acknowledged it and kept tugging and pulling. That piece of string wasn't going anywhere. It felt like someone was trying to rip out my gums. The whole procedure lasted about 45 minutes of pulling, tugging and squeezing. My breast augmentation was a piece of cake compared to what I went through with Dr. Hernandez. I even pulled out my own sutures from my breast aug. The worst part is..., I have to have another root canal to clean out the tooth because no one ever told me I had to go back to my dentist to close up the tooth. I'd rather have my tooth removed. Dr. Hernandez was by far the worst dental professional I've seen. She has shaky hands, doesn't explain things thoroughly, and she hurt me. I do not recommend her. read more

How often have you heard this one, when someone has something positive to say about having a root canal? Well, let me tell you about my experience this past week. I was mortified to hear my general dentist tell me I needed a root canal, after he hit a nerve when removing a cavity from my tooth #15. I had not had a root canal before, but have heard all the horror stories and off-color jokes about how everyone "would rather be doing anything other than a root canal.." . Dr. Shih's office was quick to accommodate me and my fears were relaxed when I entered clean and soothing office. All the staff are friendly and personable, and made me feel at ease. Finally Dr. Shih entered the operatory and proceeded to explain to me in easy to understand terms, what had happened so far, all my options including pros and cons of each, and finally what he was planning on doing during the root canal. I was also nervous because my general dentist had a hard time getting me numb, but Dr. Shih assured me that he has developed a special technique that guarantees all of his patients get numb. He was correct, and the rest of the procedure went by smoothly and without incident. I did not experience any pain either during or after the procedure, and he even called me the next day to make sure I was doing okay. Wendy is so knowledgeable and set me immediately at ease - after a 5 day hospital stay to treat a facial infection most likely caused by a cracked tooth and resulting root infection. Dr. Shih carefully reviewed X-Rays, CT scans and did several tests on my teeth and determined which tooth was causing the infection. The resulting root canal was done quickly and without any pain. I've long had great dental care with Drs. Carl & Jeff Riccoboni, and now I have a great endodonist in Dr. Kingstone C. Shih. Once the problem was identified, they got me in the next day so I didn't have to cope with the problem. Dr. Shih is very attentive, asks the right questions, and listens carefully to what you say. Then he and his staff set to work expertly and efficiently. Root canals are by nature tricky and can be painful, but they did everything to make it as easy as possible. 1, when we checked in for root canal, you told me the cost should be covered 100% by two insuances coverages. But you have no contract with Metlife, that means I need to pay extra money for the service out of network. Is it a mistake, misleading or cheating? you said it is my responsibility, but Metlife rep just told me that you are responsible to tell me the truth in the first place. If you have told me the truth, I would absolutely have chosen another one who are in the network !!! In addition, you charged $95 higher than the "reasonable commercial price". 2, I called you two times. you always told me that because the insurance company has just changed policy recently, so I have to pay $95. But the Metlife rep just told me it is not true, it's just because you are not in the network. You are covering up a lie with another lie! read more

They have locations in Mt View, Palo Alto, and Menlo Park, CA I was seen by Dr Erlyn Hernandez for 6 root canals over a 2 month period. I have had other root canals elsewhere, but she won me over. Wendy, in the Mt View office, is soooooo very nice, cheerful and just a wonderful person. The office is professional and gorgeous. NO loud music or TV blaring. Dr Shih is great. Had tooth resorption in one tooth requiring a root canal. My dentist didn't have an explanation for what might have caused it, only that it's relatively rare. I visited this office for the routing root canal. However, to my surprise, I was told that they do not cover my insurance after checking everything. The amazing part was that I was notified about that fact that I am not covered before the actual process and after injecting me with the anesthetics!!! Thanks god these guys are not surgeons! After a long very painful week I finally went to my dentist who said I needed a root canal for my front tooth! I was referred to Peninsula Endodontic Group by my dentist and they were able to see me the very same afternoon. After an examination by Dr. Shih he said he could take care of my root canal right then and there and have everything fixed in about 45 minutes. This was my first root canal so I was pretty nervous but Dr. Shih and his whole staff were amazing and explained everything and made me feel very comfortable. Although having to get a root canal was not ideal everyone at Peninsula Endodontic Group was amazing, friendly, knowledgeable, and fast. If I ever have a problem again I will definitely be going back to see Dr. Shih and his staff. They really are the best! read more

Dr: Shih is the best in the business. I am one of those type of people that has had terrible experiences with dentists before so I was terrified the first time I had to get a root canal. Dr. Shih quickly comes in an numbs up the area and moves very fast to getting to the business of performing the work. I just bring my headphones and the time passes very quickly and painlessly. He explains everything he is going to do and checks in during his work to make sure you are ok. I have a hand signal if I need him to stop. And he sees it right away. I was done in no time. The office ladies are extremely nice and positive energy. They treat everyone with a lot of respect and make sure you know exactly what will need to be paid. I have literally no pain during the entire procedure. I've had three done here and would not go to anyone else in the entire Bay Area. Also when I went home, dr. Got a root canal from Dr. Shih. Quality work, expertly done. Speedy, efficient -- get 'em in, get 'em out. Cons: he pumped me so thoroughly with anesthetic that I started to pass out, and I could practically hear his foot tapping as he waited for the blood to return to my face. Overall the price is quite expensive (nearly twice what I've been charged in the past for the same procedure), though it the quality of work is defintely reflected in the price. My front tooth has a previous root canal done 10 years ago got infected. I was scared and rescheduled my appointment several times because I know that it really hurts to have root canal. My tooth started hurting and didn't have a choice but to come in. Wendy, the front desk girl understood my situation, accomodated me and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Hernandez.
