We have used Penfed for car loans and other loans over the years. Always pain on time and also paid all loans off in half the amortization time. Called for a 20k loan and with over 800 credit score and was told they wanted 2 years of personal and business tax returns after dinging my credit with an inquiry. I went to local bank and had the loan within an hour. YESTERDAY GOT A LETTER STATING THEY EMPTIED THE SHARE ACCOUNT AS "UNCLAIMED PROPERTY" WITH NO NOTICE AND I WILL HAVE TO CHASE IT DOWN WITH THE STATE. On April 19th, 2023, I applied for a credit card with PenFed and I was approved. I completed the additional paper work needed along with making a deposit to meet all the requirements. Today is May 22nd, 2023 and I have NOT received my credit card. After numerous calls on: April 28th May 3rd May 10th May 19th May 22nd PenFed can't seem to get me a credit card. This has been the WORST 1st time experience with a credit union. At this point, I can NOT recommend doing business with this credit union. This is not a good way to start a banking relationship. Worst credit union ever! I canceled a contract with a Mexican timeshare within the allotted time and filed a dispute for a charge when they failed to return my money. Not only did PenFed say the charge was valid, but they also allowed the company to come back a second time to withdraw the same amount of funds. 4 years ago, my husband died suddenly and unexpectedly. I was 32 and he was 40 years old. He was a veterinarian and I was a critical care nurse practitioner. I lost my husband, I was working full time in intensive care units during the pandemic, and trying to navigate my new life without my spouse as a sole provider. While everyone was sympathetic and kind hearted as I navigated the business aspect of death, PENFED was and still is a complete nightmare. Truly one of the most unsympathetic, heartless companies I have ever had the unfortunate opportunity to deal with in my entire life... Pen FED credit union, is a private company my husband refinanced his student loans from Vet School with a couple years before his death so we could have a better interest rate than the 8% the federal student loans were charging us in an attempt to pay off his student loans a little quicker. We were paying over a thousand dollars a month and NEVER missed a payment. Well long story short. PENFED could care less that my late husband died. They immediately switched the loan over to my name and said the next payment would be due in October 2020 (he died September 21st 2020). They however, would not give me access to the online portal as it was a privacy law to protect deceased members, although they were still coming for me for remittance. I had to open a new account under my name alone. After seeking guidance from an attorney to try and set up a different payment plan as I was now assuming his student loan debt and was surviving off of a sole income they essentially blew us off and drug us around for nearly a year having me fill out hardship applications, etc only to abruptly sell the loan to a debt collector without informing my attorney. After I paid off the loan from the debt collector, they dinged my credit and reported the small discount from the debt collector to the IRS 3 years later to attempt to obtain taxes for money they said I should claim as "earned income". I never write reviews. And after I reached out this year in 2024 to obtain a 1099-C form that they never sent out to send to IRS, they blew me off and drug me around yet again. They are awful, horrible people. There are so many companies you can put your trust in when applying for and obtaining loans. They are unprofessional and don't give a shit about you or your loved ones who died unexpectedly. I'm not asking for pity. You live and learn. My dead husbands student loan that he had been paying on for 10 years is payed in full. But take it from me, stay away from this horrible company. read more

I'm very disappointed with the service of PenFed. My wife had been a member since the early 80 and in the last two week they had blocked her Debit and Credit cards. The had bounce my wife many calls between Fraud Dep and card member services and they haven't fixed the problem, plus no one have given an answer on why the cards are still blocked. We are traveling overseas at the moment and she can't use her cards. We are tired and very frustrated of dealing with Penfed. If we can get it fixed by next week (we're in Italy and traveling) then we're going to switch to USAA. Penfed screwed me on a Helic and almost made me lose a house I am buying. I contacted Penfed to inquire about a Heloc on my current home to buy another house. I was then going to sell my current house after I did some work on it. I was completely upfront with the loan officer I talked to about my intentions. He told me "No problem, we will do that. Great, I put an offer on the house and everything was going OK. The loan processor had me jumping troigh all kinds of hoops to get this done. She was also aware the whole time about my intentions to buy a house. I have avgreat credit score and make plenty of money to qualify for this loan. It house through all of the steps and it goes to underwriting. This was 9 days before my closing date on the house. I get a phone call from the loan processor telling me they will not do this loan because I am buying another house with it, we don't do this is all I was told. Wait a minute, the loan officer and the processor were both on board for 3 weeks. Now I'm scrambling to find another loan. Fortunately I was able to secure the funds but it cost me thousands of dollars to secure another loan in this short of time. I have pulled all of my money from Penfed and will never do business with them again. I will also do everything in my power to make sure everyone I know will not do business with them either. So, I had my 2023 BMW refinanced with penfed in June 2023. Penfed began sending me letters requesting the title. I responded in writing and by telephone that I do not have the title. Months go by and then in November 2023, I get a notice stating that my failure to provide title has forced them to increase my interest rate to the highest interest rate for their closed-end unsecured loans of 17.99%. Excuse me???? First of all, I don't have title and secondly I don't appreciate being threatened!!!!! I call to speak with someone and he gets very nasty on the phone and unprofessional. Cautionary Review of PenFed's loan department We've been members of Pentagon Credit Union for nearly 30 years, and we've had a great experience with their banking services. However, we strongly recommend against obtaining a mortgage loan from their loan department. This is our second time obtaining a home mortgage from PenFed, and we didn't have any issues the first time. However, this time around, the experience was absolutely unprofessional and marked by incompetence. In the beginning, we submitted our loan application through their officer, Adrian Rodriguez. However, we had to file a complaint because he didn't enter the correct information into the system, nor did he advise us of the incorrect information he entered into the system, which hindered us from uploading our documents. Moreover, despite our initial request for a VA loan, he proceeded with a conventional loan. Subsequently, Kim Garcia took over. Despite having solid credit scores, offering over 50% as a down payment on a $397,000 house, a household income of $165,000 with no other debts, and a calculated monthly mortgage of $1,400, we were unable to move forward due to the exorbitant fees imposed by PenFed. Although Kim successfully addressed the initial problem of not passing points and fees by eliminating some optional fees, the issue resurfaced when it reached the processor, Lisa Ramirez. As a solution, Kim suggested that we either make an additional $10,000 down payment, in the hope that it would resolve the issue, or consider switching to a VA loan. Kim explained that the situation was beyond their control, ceased responding to our calls, and assured us that her supervisor, Gabriella Bafidis, would contact us to reiterate the same. Unfortunately, Ms. Bafidis never reached out, which we found highly unprofessional. However, they did respond to our realtor's call, who reminded Kim that changing to a VA loan necessitated the seller's approval. We acknowledge that the issue lies with their processor and underwriter division, but our attempts to reach Lisa Ramirez for a discussion on resolving the matter were in vain. With a tight deadline looming, we had no alternative but to explore other lenders. Surprisingly, we discovered that our loan was so straightforward that most mortgage brokers could process it with ease and offered us a significantly lower interest rate. In light of our experience, we strongly advise against using PenFed's loan department. Our encounter with this department was marked by outrageous fees and a significant lack of competence and professionalism, particularly within the processing and underwriting division. These issues not only created unnecessary complications but also led to unresponsiveness from key personnel, leaving us with no choice but to seek alternatives. Before my total loss I would have gotten an additional loan with this bank. I called in AUGUST for information to give to the gap insurance company so I could get my loan paid off as my insurance company had already paid 18k towards my pay off. I didn't get any documents until mid September after calling and calling. ALSO im still required to make the monthly payments towards my car even though the 18k should have given me some leeway. I am still dealing with gap to get my car paid off in October and won't see a payoff until HOPEFULLY November. Now they want to charge me for insurance, from the time my car has been totaled, as well. You expect me to not have a vehicle for 3 months while I still pay on a car that had been scraped for parts in August plus insurance? The answer I received in letting them know I have another vehicle to pay for was "that's not our concern you still need to make your payments the 18k was a ONE time payment".... Yes, because I had 18 thousand dollars just sitting around to make a ONE time payment. You all have some backwards way of dealing with total loss and your GAP coverage. I have no idea why I can get a credit card from 2 different banks with a 700+ credit score but they're just sure I'm too irresponsible for a checking or savings account. Poor customer service. After waiting 2 hours, I gave up waiting for "member services" for something that should have taken 2 minutes: a signature guarantee. After I called their main customer service number (and I had to explain to their customer service person what a "signature guarantee" was - something rather basic for a bank - but this required getting a manager on the phone, apparently), I was cheerfully informed I did not need an appointment for this. Well, maybe an appointment would have been better. They seem to have 1 or at most 2 employees servicing 15+ people who were waiting for "member services". Most of us can't afford to take a 2 hour lunch break, to waste it in a bank on something elemental like this. Since the property is a new construction and we see the rates going up. We asked if PenFed has a long term lock option. Yes they do, without upfront fees. Which is very attractive to us. In the meanwhile, we were waiting to provide the documents as the closing is in November. However, today October 27th, they told me because my company is in the Cannabis related company, they can't use my W-2 as income. I mean, really? I am a W-2 data analyst. Come on. I'm unaware of your hiring process for your customer service team, but in the few times I have had to call In for my auto loan, I was handled like a person who committed a crime. This company has hired egotistical, psychologically challenged, individuals who choose to make simple questions and matters that should have a clear protocol, rocket science. I have never received a straight answer instead being harrassed, mislead, HUNG UP ON. I asked a question of the process for returning a vehicle and was flat out refused by a incompantant employee. And I quote " you cannot just return the car voluntarily, you agreed and sign a contract and we don't have to take the car back" WOW so voluntary surrender does not exist within this company even when individuals fall on hard times or JUST want to know procedure. Poor Service - We opened a CD a couple years back and had to open two savings accounts in order to establish the CD. There rates are good but the service is poor. We opened the account from a woman named Mary and it took almost two hours. Two years later we went to Close the accounts with a different woman named Mary. Lets just call her "Mary Jones". She was so determined that I didn't have an account and I told her I did. She asked that I look at her computer screen to show me. It turns out the first Mary keyed in the wrong SSN. Well, overall if the benefits suit you, go ahead. We have used them in a limited fashion for a credit card. They will charge you for a mailed statement, so you might be better off using their rather byzantine and confused web-page. There are multiple clicks that appear to get you to your card statement, some of them work, others get you to a place that you don't want to be. Yes, all of the information is there, but hard to find. They are quick to shut down a card without warning, they claim that they will try to reach you via email, phone etc., I know that may or may not happen. Phone support is clumsy. Overall, I get the impression that they do not trust you, no matter how long and faithful your customer relationship has been. Penfed works, but other card agencies work better. read more

Pen Fed Credit Union posts payments to your CC and accounts in their own slow time. They purposely hold your payments, even thought they are days deducted from my bank, so they tie up your credit line and you can't make additional purchases. They do the same poor pratice with transferring money , making your funds unavailable for 5 business days. PEN FED, get some computers to process your transactions in an expedient manner. They just don't want to pay their paltry rewards on the CC. I can not recommend this credit union. POOR customer service that takes forever. Look eleswhere, we plan to. read more

Literally the worst bank on the planet. I had a credit card transferred to them. I go into the branch to make a cash payment. Hard earned money mind you. They thank me for my payment and hold the available balance for 10 days. A CASH PAYMENT! come pay day, I will be paying off this card and closing it. the worst everything. customer service is lousy. policy is lousy. One of the most horrible "banking" experiences ever. Opened an account in late November 2018. I live in the Midwest, they are based on the East Coast so this was a planned online banking arrangement. My opening of the account went smoothly through the funding but hung up when it came to creating the online login. I got an error. No big deal, I filled out the online form and called customer service as the error page instructed. The customer service rep told me the online login never went through and to create a new username/password. Again, no big deal. Except it was. Again I got the error. Again i filled out the form. Again I called. Again I was told to create a new username/password. What?! I went through this insanity cycle 4 or 5 more times, with them on the phone to ensure I wasn't doing something wrong, to no avail. They said they'd put in an IT ticket. Ok. Three or four days later I realize I haven't heard anything so I try the last login I had created. Same error. I call up and get told to create a new username/password. I say "hell no". Been there, done that. It doesn't work. I get told that maybe it'll work this time. I try again, again with them on the phone. Wanna take a guess? Another IT ticket. Another wait. Rinse and repeat multiple times over the course of the next 4 weeks. Yes, you read that correctly. FOUR weeks. Many, many excuses from: We're updating our systems IT is working on your case next We're super bogged down We'll get right on it Please, just wait a little longer etc Granted, I'm the idiot for waiting as long as I did. The bottom line is the rates were attractive and I'd heard good things so I really wanted the issue to get solved. I kept telling myself that if we could just get this fixed it'd all be fine. Finally the new year hit and I'd had enough. I gave them one more chance. They left me on hold for more than 18 minutes supposedly called over to IT to check on the ticket and then when she came back on the line to explain the situation she hung up on me. She knew who she was talking to so I waited for a return call. Never happened. Thirty minutes later I called back and closed the account. They have no IT/tech support available to their customers. The only people you can ever talk to are customer service and they know nothing about the website/IT. If you ever have a tech issue you will be SOL for weeks+. The customer service is horrific!
