No matter how busy they are, how many people are trying to figure out the copier, how many toddlers are squealing in their play area, everyone at the counter is smiling and quick to lend a hand. When it's not quite so hectic, there's no one better to help you find a book, even when you can't quite describe what you want. Now that's a great skill! Big shout-out to Caitlin and CC (unsure of spellings), both of whom are quite knowledgeable and always ready to offer assistance, and to Manager Nathan, who works side-by-side with them and sets the tone that makes Leland Library such a great place to visit. It's easy to drive right by this BCL gem tucked in just past the Brunswick Center on Village Road, but you definitely need to stop by when you have a few minutes. P.S. The pics are random: the flag out front of the library on a beautiful afternoon and a film event from January (2026). I decided to check out Children's Story Time and it didn't disappoint. Starts at 10AM promptly and lasts around 30 min. The Librarian will read three-four books and do some type of interactive song/dance in between each book. My little is almost ten months old and I was impressed by how entertained he was. He enjoyed watching the other kids sing and dance. It also is another opportunity to start introducing him to groups of children so he can learn how to act in public. After story time, there is a very small and simple craft for the kids to participate in that is led by the Librarian. Cute idea! If you're looking to get out of the house for a bit and spend zero dollars, this is a great option for your kiddo!

The USS Battleship in North Carolina is one of the largest & iconic attractions of Wilmington,…read moreNorth Carolina. It went beyond my greatest expectations and was quite a workout in the middle of July. We chose to go on the self guided tour, so we could explore at our own pace. History of the battleship: The Battleship NORTH CAROLINA participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific theater of operations during World War II, earning 15 battle stars. This authentically restored National Historic Landmark proudly serves as her State's World War II Memorial to the 11,000+ North Carolinians who made the ultimate sacrifice.- (Source: https://battleshipnc.com) One of the highlights of visiting this battleship is that your ticket for the self guided tour allows you to leave and re-enter the battleship on the day you bought it (from 8 AM to 5 PM). Military discount is $10 an adult person - must have military ID. We spent about 3 or more hours exploring the ship and it was quite an exercise workout going up and down the stairs in the ship on a hot day. There are 9 levels to explore on the battleship. We were not able to finish exploring all the levels due to being exhausted by the heat and getting dehydrated. There are areas you can sit and take a break in the ship fortunately. We took a few breaks but not enough. There are some fans inside the ship yet not many. The battleship has a wealth of information to read at the entrance area and inside the ship at every area. It felt like going inside narrow passage ways in a labyrinth walking through the ship. They displayed information of life inside the ship - a floating home away from for thousands of men living there. If you love military naval history or have a curious mind open to seeing & learning a wide variety of information & history, you will find this battleship fascinating. The shops inside the ship, post office, dining & recreational areas, officer living quarters, pharmacy , and kitchens were fascinating to me. The view of the battleship is very impressive as well. I can only imagine what this battleship was like many years ago especially when the only communication people on the battleship could receive from loved ones was through mail coming into the post office on the ship. I should have brought water and take more rest & hydration breaks at the battleship. It gets really hot during summer and very cold in the winter. It was too exhausting to keep going past three hours on the ship in one day . Overall, I loved visiting the battleship and a little shocked at how difficult it must be living on that ship with thousands of people on it. Looking forward to visiting this battleship again in the future.

Earlier today we stopped at the information booth on the Riverwalk and the lady behind the counter was very clear about where and what time the fireworks will be, no smiles but she was clear about the time 9pm and location: right in front of the "battleship". Well we had dinner and were there, right in front of the battleship at 8pm waited until 9:10pm and the fireworks started about ONE mile away on the river, we could barely see it, we could hear the noise but were very dissatisfied and disappointed. We know you are a very popular Mayor but you failed big time on this 249 anniversary of our Independence. According to news, the non-profit facility faced a steady decline in residents, and it proved too expensive to convert its aging buildings to meet federal and state standards for assisted living or nursing care. The buildings were acquired by the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmington, which extensively renovated its interior, largely with volunteer labor by church members. Today, the church uses the buildings to house its preschool, as well as for Sunday school classes and church suppers. The marker reads, "Catherine Kennedy Home. For the elderly. Grew from Ladies Benevolent Society, founded, 1845. First home, 1879, stood four blocks east." Online, there is more information. "he Ladies Benevolent Society of Wilmington was organized in 1845 for the purpose of general charity work. The organization was chartered by the state legislature in 1852. The facility was used as a home for aged women, and became known as "The Old Ladies Rest." By 1942, the home, run by a matron under the direction of a self-perpetuating board of directors, had twenty-eight residents. In 1950, the facility moved to a new location on Third Street (at the corner of Orange)." "The Catherine Kennedy Home operated as a non-profit independent living retirement community for more than 100 years. It was among the oldest homes for the aged in America when it closed its doors permanently in July 2000. The Catherine Kennedy Home Foundation was created following the home's demise. In 2003 the foundation presented $60,000 in grants to charitable organizations that promote the welfare of the elderly in southeastern North Carolina. The grants were a part of the Foundation's mission in managing and administrating the charitable assets received from the home's sale." Online, there is more information. "A set of defensive earthworks constructed in the fall of 1862, Topsail Battery was designed to thwart an attack on Wilmington from the north down the old New Bern road (the approximate route of present US 17). A secondary purpose was to guard New Topsail Inlet and Topsail Sound, keeping them open to blockade runners. The attack from the north never materialized. However, plans were made for such an attack by Union Gen. J. G. Foster while he occupied New Bern and reinforcements of troops and artillery were sent to the site in 1864 by Confederate Gen. W. H. C.
