I chose a taper with hand carved flowers that was also traced in gold. For all that hard work, 15,50€ per taper was an unbeatable price. It appears that the non-decorated tapers go for 2€ apiece which is extremely affordable for the craft and handiwork that goes into it. I got the one taper, but hope to be back soon to try the scented candles!

Were it not for luggage restrictions, I would have definitely done a lot more damage here. While the store itself is not super large, it's easy to spend hours browsing as there are a multitude of items ranging from decorative centerpieces, ornamental trinkets to practical tableware as well as intricate Portuguese tiles. I was just in Japan marveling over all the ceramics that I wished I could bring home, but I have to say the Portuguese ceramic game is on a whole another level... the pieces are unique (no two pieces are identical), well-made and best of all, very economically priced. I ended up purchasing multiple pieces of tableware (plates and bowls) while my partner bought a large ornamental ceramic cat as a gift -- all for around 70 euros! Make sure to ask them for bubble wrap (priced at 1€ per square meter-- the ladies at the counter will tell you how much you need) to protect your pieces for the journey home. A must visit during your trip to Lisbon to stock up on the most unique of gifts and home tableware, but if you plan on visiting I would recommend bringing along an extra suitcase! :^)

Many of the pieces are sold by weight and some are by the piece. There are mugs, cups, saucers, plates, bowls and all sorts of other things to use in the kitchen and dining room. Once I figured out the system, I ended up with two absolutely beautiful white coffee mugs and a very pretty pink bowl. The young lady who rang up my sale wrapped them in paper and they survived the rest of the day in Lisbon and then the journey back to home. The bowl is on my desk. We had just walked in and we were looking at their roosters, we were deciding which one to get. The colors of each rooster was slightly different. The male worker who was helping us rudely asked why we were looking at all the roosters, we should just take the first rooster on the shelf. I pointed out to him the colors of the flowers were different and we were deciding which one we wanted. He argued with us saying the roosters were all the same. We would have bought more but left with only this small item because we did not want to continue to be treated in such a terribly disrespectful manner.

Friends we dined with asked what we'd been doing so far in Lisbon and we asked the same of them…read more El Corte Inglés wasn't just on their recommended list; It also came to me in a text message the following day, reminding me that I should go there. Wow. Amongst the things I didn't even know that I was pining away for, add an 8-story+ department store that is everything to everyone. We entered in a very high-end part of the store featuring all the luxury brands one knows then descended to a food court and movie theaters. From there, I moved on to explore the amazing lower-level supermarket before leaving there and strolling into the beauty/pharmacy department filled with products that both are and aren't available in the US. I took the escalator up, eyeballing what each floor held before disembarking at a floor featuring home furnishings, electronics, housewares, and Christmas decor then got together with my friends for a drink at a wine bar on the top floor. Someone else could write a book on all I likely missed here but what I saw guaranteed that from here on I'll be searching for El Corte Inglése in every place I travel. If you think it's odd to have a department store on your must-see list in Lisbon it's clear that you've not yet been to El Corte Inglés.

The cushions did not match and when the items arrived we could not use the room for several days because of the strong smell of lacquer from the glue. We were keen to have the room done quickly as my 95 year old mothering law was visiting for 3 weeks. We were assured the room would be ready. She had been back n England for 3 weeks before the room was partly done so we had to improvise for her stay and she never saw the 5000 euro room we looked forward for her to stay in. The work men visited 3 times and forgot items required or brought the wrong item. We are still waiting for a chair as they had ordered the wrong one. Don't go there
