It's hard to imagine a better, more authentic way to eat seafood than this. The restaurant is…read morelocated basically inside the fish market, and while it is clean and cozy, it is clearly a more humble setting than where you would expect to find some of the best seafood in the city. Don't let the simplicity of the setting fool you: you are about to eat a feast worthy of Poseidon himself. They have a platter you can order that will literally take up the entire table. It comes as a huge cast-iron griddle that is simply overflowing with lobsters, shrimp, salmon, various white fish, octopus, squid, mussels... Basically everything delicious you could imagine. The platter fed eight of is perfectly, and came in (including drinks) at about R$60 each. Not bad! The restaurant may be a bit hard to find. It's along the side of the big fish market. Just ask someone if you're having trouble finding it.

My wife and I came and ordered the 1/2 portion of the same dish as pictured by the 5 star reviewer who claimed it was enough to feed 8. It includes fish, shrimp, octopus, muscles, calamari, baked potatoes and rice. Well... We went for lunch and the 2 of us finished everything without problem and it was R240 plus 10% service fee without drinks. The food was good but nothing stood out and we both felt it would be much better value and experience at any of the top Brazilian steakhouses that cost around R120 per person.

Restaurante La Plancha - The chili sauce was so good and SPICY! I literally blacked out for a few seconds. But still a must try!

The Crab and the shrimps Paste (turnover / empanadas) are also delicious, as well as the fried fresh fish chunks with local mustard sauce. The Caipirinha also wonderfully done. Truly lunch in paradise. Although service was friendly, just make sure they don't get charged your American credit card in USD, charge in Brazilian Reais (better exchange). We could have stayed there all day. Truly worthwhile. What a gem. We don't have this in Miami.

If you're a surfer, friends with a surfer, or simply enjoy watching surfers, this Prainha…read morerestaurant is ideal. The reason for the surfing reference has to do with the fact that's located at the top of a small beach popular amongst wave riders so whether you're going after a great day or simply going to enjoy the view, it's a great spot. Located at a gorgeous lookout along Prainha beach, Mirante da Praia offers a great caipirinha along with some seafood and staple Brazilian snacks. The drive from Rio is relatively easy and will take you about 40 min to an hour by car. Once you leave Rio, you're mostly driving along the coast, so the beaches you'll pass along the way are picture-perfect. While fish is the thing, our table didn't really enjoy ours. It came out slightly raw and rather unimpressive in flavor. The shrimp pastels were excellent and the fried yuca was nice too. This place is ideal for an afternoon gazing upon the water, eating a shrimp pastel and drinking a caipirinha.
