Look, I guess I will have to admit this at last: I'm an aficionado of pedestrian walkways. I love 'em. I'm mad for them. I've traveled the world in search of great pedestrian-walkway design. They are nimble, clever, people-friendly structures which allow bipeds to cross--on foot--the most frenetic, deadly, dangerous 8-lane highways on the planet. Their presence in a street-system is a sign of municipal courtesy and civic-mindedness. When you spot one, you know that someone cares about YOU. And you know, each country does them differently. In Belgium they look like lily fronds; in China they look like starbusts; in Brazil they look like tree limbs. This one--very high profile in Lower Manhattan, right near WTC--seen by 1.5 motorists daily--just doesn't cut it. My gosh, I wouldn't cross the street to cross the street via this contraption. I wouldn't let a dog onto this rickety piece-of-shit. Its garish, Its blocky. Its grotesque. Typical New York! Godamn you! Its unfeeling. Just look at it! What is that, Death Star chic? What is this, 'LastDay' for Logan-5? Its one of the coldest and most unpleasant structures in Manhattan--which in itself, is an island just about as cheerful--these days--as a medieval abattoir. Does this overpass even have a name? Probably not. It doesn't deserve one. Steer CLEAR. Go around! Burrr! read more
