Nice gym with good boulders. A little steep for a day pass if you're only here to boulder. Also the bathrooms are a mile away from the actual gym (have to exit and walk down 3 different hallwas) and are a little dark/dingy. Plenty of parking, friendly staff, and most importantly - to me - good quality problems that you can spend a couple hours on. I don't like the color/circuit grading (prefer V scale) but the climbs themselves are good. read more

Went here for a day pass with a friend to check out Peak since we were in the area. Coming from Northern Virginia (Sportrock), it was nice to see visit another gym outside of the area. The grading system here is pretty fair. Found most of the grades to be very accurate to the V scale that they use. They have plenty of routes on Top Rope and Bouldering for all skill levels, and also have a long comp wall as well! With a variety of holds on slab, caves and overhang, you can definitely gets some miles in at this gym. some of the walls here are kind of high from what I'm used too, so it was a little scary getting to the top. The gym is also clean and very spacious. Plenty of walls to go around so peak hours shouldn't be so bad. I haven't experienced it since I'm not from the area, but the space is huge. Overall, a very nice gym. Clean, spacious and accurate grades. Definitely recommend this climbing gym! read more

It was so cool to finally visit the rival climbing gym of my normal gym in town. In my experience, a lot of people I know who take climbing very seriously (some who even climb competitively) end up going to Peak. After visiting, I understand why. If you like bouldering more than ropes this is the place for you. The bouldering walls are pretty tall and there are a lot of them. There's a great mix of levels on the bouldering walls here too. The first time you visit is free with free equipment rental. As someone who is more into rope climbing, I wish I had the chance to try their rope routes (the people I went there with invited me for bouldering). However, when I finally mustered up the courage to do a full bouldering route, it was pretty fun. I'm excited to visit again to try their other walls. read more

Peak has amazing bouldering with fun routes for all levels of climbers. They use a color-grading system where a color represents a range of levels in the V scale (e.g., yellow is V2, V3, or V4). The grading here was pretty accurate. My group went in before 10 AM for the early bird special, and it was only $12! They have a ton of routes you can try on different terrains (e.g., overhang, cave, slab, etc.) and even have a pretty extensive comp wall as well. I was really impressed by the variety of bouldering routes available. They had ones where you jump-start, dyno, run across volumes, select different paths using the same start hold, bat-hang, and more. Peak utilizes all of the holds they have really well so that you can get as much mileage and experience on all types of movements and holds. You get a lot of space to do these problems as well which was nice. They also have a lot of shoes, gear, and merch. The gym is very clean with a ton of space for personal belongings as well. They have auto-belay practice, gym equipment, and training boards available to use. My one disclaimer here is that falling from the boulders is pretty scary. I'm used to jumping off of the finish hold, but jumping down is a ton of distance and is something to be weary about. I didn't top-rope or lead climb here, so I can't say much about their routes. Judging off of the looks of it, I'd say Triangle Rock Club beats it in the ropes. Overall, I enjoyed my time here a lot. My first time visiting -- had no idea this was nestled near me! I'd never climbed before, but they were hosting a BIPOC night collab with RCC. Staff was friendly and helpful. The place is huge! There are so many different types on climbs & puzzles to solve. Super sanitary during COVID. Limited capacity in the space at all times & they require a reservation beforehand for 2hr slots. You wash your hands at the sink before you enter the building. There are sanitizer stations throughout the place. Everyone must wear a mask coming in & it's suggested to wear it while climbing as well. Mostly everyone had their mask on the whole time. read more

Service: The staff are courteous and helped me get certified for auto-belay promptly. When I decided to register at a later date, they had some difficulty finding my prior signed documents, but they found it eventually. They were helpful in making recommendations about memberships given my situation. They didn't interact with me otherwise during my climbs. They change the holds every so often so you don't get bored. Ambiance: Very casual and friendly clientele. People were eager to cheer others on or make chat. There's an auto-belay section in the back and a good amount of belay and lead climbing. There's also quite a bit of bouldering walls. Parking in the lot hasn't been difficulty any time. The bathrooms are quite a walk away, so be sure to change out of your climbing shoes prior to going. Value: I opted for the punch pass since I am an infrequent climber, but the monthly pass seems a good value for those who can go. read more

I've been to Peak RVA multiple times with friends on different days and at different times. Big upgrade over PeakMidlothian. Even when busy after 5pm and on weekends, its still a great place to climb- I've never felt crowded at Peak. Routes are color coded for ranges, V0-V2, etc. Might be helpful with breaking a plateau or attempting a climb you wouldn't attempt elsewhere just because you see a higher rating. Is it a V3, or a V5? Who knows, get on the wall! Cheaper equipment prices than Triangle Rock Club. Same day pass price at $19, but Peak has a nice $16 pass for military, students, teachers, and health care professionals. PeakRVA has a large bouldering area with a cave, nice overhangs, and a slab wall. I believe there are five auto belays altogether. The walls are for both top roping and lead climbing. Friends can take the stairs up to the top of the bouldering walls for some nice picture angles or just a space to hang out. They have a variety of classes for yoga and fitness. They also have intro to bouldering classes, an intermediate climbing class, and of course separate top roping and lead climbing certification classes. Definitely become certified to belay and come with a friend. Of course, you can pair up with other climbers for a catch. I don't recall seeing staff floating around the tall walls to belay, but I could be recalling incorrectly. The last time I went, I exclusively bouldered. Peak also has a nice separate space for hang-board and campus training. Next to it is a lounge-type of area with a snack machine. There's some other food and drinks available but they're with the Sports Center of Richmond, not specifically Peak. Bathrooms are across the building by the SCOR's indoor party area along with some lockers. The water fountains are a far way off as well so bring your own hydration source. There are cubbies around the climbing area if you don't mind not being able to lock up. Peak also has a fun competition wall that TRC does not. Good amount of merchandise options. I'll have to take a better look next time in order to say more. read more

Enjoyed climbing here. I only boulder so I can't speak on their top rope but for bouldering there were lots of different routes and I liked how high up they go, most gyms are much lower. The building is huge and even though it was busy it didn't feel overcrowded. The only thing I didn't love was the unclear grading system. I had to to back a few times to their color chart since the routes aren't marked with a V grade. read more

I have never been here climbing myself but I come once a week to pick up from a kids climbing club. There are a lot of different areas to climb, once that a free climb, one that you can climb using a machine, and another you need another person. The kids always seem to have a good time, there are different courses and options. The membership seems pretty affordable for what is provided. read more

I've been a member for years and I never get bored climbing here. They change the bouldering walls so often, that there's almost always something new to try. In addition to having the best bouldering walls I've climbed, they also have a ton of top rope options, and an enormous lead belay section. It's really great that they also include plenty of auto-belay areas for solo climbers. Outside of the main activity, they even have a really great gym area for doing a more usual workout routine. Although the area may be small, they've got all of the equipment for a really great workout. I also love that they offer yoga throughout the week. Not only is it good for the body, it really helps with rock climbing. Their membership program is incredible! They have many options to fit just about anyone; and the benefits are my favorite part! Being able to bring someone once a month for free, including climbing gear is awesome! I have brought quite a few people now, and they love it too! read more

We had a long trip from NYC to Georgia and decided to stop in and take a 2 hour detour to do some climbing. Needed to get the blood moving a bit. Prices for the day pass were great and it was our own fault that we didn't take full advantage and stay longer. Be aware... this facility has an excellent setup for professional rock climbing, training and education. If you are only interested in passing through, then there is a very large area for boulder traversing and a very small area with an auto-belay system. You can not use the whole facility without belay training. All and all though, my family had a great afternoon there. Even the limited options were great for our varying skill levels. I wish i lived closer to take full advantage of what their facility has to offer. read more

We were so excited to check out Peak! It was my husbands first time climbing, so we saw online a "sampler" that seemed cool for us - comes with a staff member and 3 climbs for $20. The guy who helped us kindly told us it's kiiiins of geared towards kids and we'd probably want more ban 3 climbs, so he suggested getting auto belay certified and it was a buck less. For climbing on the auto belay system as much as you want - GREAT suggestion! I forget what the guys name was who helped us but he was super cool and great. We took out belay test and passed and explored the gym. As with most climbing gyms, it can be kinda intimidating as newbies since most climbers that are not climbing are watching you. But we had tons of fun, didn't feel like we were being judged for our lack of skill and experience, and will definitely hit up peak again! read more

I've been a member of Triangle Rock Club for a year and decided to climb at both Peak locations today, to see if I should switch memberships for the next year. In terms of climbing quality, they're comparable, and Peak has the benefit of having two locations in town. After top roping in Midlothian, I was leaning towards getting a Peak membership, but I knew the Richmond location would have to seal the deal because that's the area of town I come into for other reasons; Midlo is out of the way for me. I am not getting the Peak Experiences membership. HOW CAN YOU HAVE A CLIMBING GYM WITHOUT A CHANGING ROOM?!?!! Not just no showers. Nowhere to change at all, aside from next to a urinal. You also have to take off your climbing shoes and walk quite a distance in order to wash your hands. Unbelievable. It is a completely inappropriate location for this reason and they never should have added this as their second building. read more

Rock climbing is one of my favorite past times! We were members at Peak Midlothian before they opened this new location. They have seriously upgraded with great new walls, holds, and a wonderful bouldering area. Unfortunately the restrooms are far from the climbing center and do not stock the gritty soap for washing hands after climbing. There is a perk in the new bar area and Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches! One thing that I found very annoying is that they let guys climb without their shirts on. If I can't climb topless then men shouldn't be able to either. read more

Peak was a fun place to introduce the kids to climbing and fantastic staff experience - I can't stress the last piece enough. I took our three kids (9, 13, and 15) for their first rock climbing experience on a Saturday morning/day and we purchased the sampler package for all (including a day pass, equipment, and instruction). The staff - Ms Marcy and Ms Abbey - were fantastic with the kids especially our youngest who has significant emotional and behavioral challenges moving between wanting hugs and constant attention from staff to melting down in the middle of the gym. The staff (and the gym) handled the swings between our 9 year olds excitement/behaviors and supporting the big kids looking for instruction with grace and incredible maturity. Ultimately we all had a great time and the big kids left (after ~5hrs) very tired and happy. They woke up the next morning very sore, with smiles, and wanting to return - and we will. read more

For something you can do in nature they charge you $20 for a one-day visit. 60 + 4 a month. So if you go in there for 30 minutes and hurt your or strain a muscle you're out $20 no rebates no nothing. It's overly expensive charging six to seven times the amount of a gym membership for the ability to do pull ups on a fake rock don't get me wrong the facility is beautiful but it's overpriced for something you could go do for free in nature read more

I love this place! Everyone is super friendly, I'm a new climber and was welcomed by everyone I've talked to getting advice and encouragement from much better climbers constantly. The boulder setting is great with a variety of types of climbing for all levels from dynamic problems to techy ones that really help develop your skills. I've progressed really quickly in just a few months and believe I'll continue. Especially since they're building a campus board and systems wall. The shop is actually pretty good with an awesome selection of evolv shoes and petzl harnesses for all levels. And the prices are pretty competitive, especially with the member discount. The day rate of $20ish is about the same as any climbing gym from what I've seen. If compared to a gym like golds the monthly rate might seem high but it's not when you consider what your really getting here. They have great yoga classes that run all of the time and they offer climbing lessons as well(I took a class that turned into basically a private lesson for free with my membership and learned awesome training techniques and movements that have helped my climbing already) The place is big and even when its crowded it's easy to find space to climb. All of that being said the best part is the sense of community that I get, like I said at the beginning everyone is really friendly and encouraging which feels great. I started climbing because I dont like gyms for working out. I feel out of place, inexperienced, its difficult to get motivation and there's also the uhh..egotistical "meathead" aspect ( sorry I'm sure there's a better way to put that but I couldn't think of a better way). This is something I don't get here there's no big egos everyone is friendly and welcoming. Climbing is an awesome full body workout when done properly and it seems great for all body types. I see all different shapes at the gym it's just super super fun at any level. I have no problem finding motivation to climb, even when I'm tired from work. So in conclusion the setting is awesome and challenging for all levels. It changes on a regular enough basis to not get bored but still have problems to work on. The yoga classes are great and the gym area is pretty awesome if you want to workout as well. Simply put, this place doesn't seem beginner friendly. I came here a few months ago to try the place out. I was pretty excited cause I've heard a lot of good things while the place was being built and I knew a lot of other people that were also excited to go. Unfortunately when I finally got to go I just felt frustrated most of the time I was there. I have been climbing for about 3 years or so but had fallen out of it for this past year and was eager to get back into it. I came with my partner who hadn't done much climbing yet and was hoping to break into V1 climbs. When we got there we did the usual: signed the waiver, paid the fee, rented whatever gear we needed, etc. The facility was really gorgeous. Huge ceilings, modern walls, and nice staff. We came to boulder mostly because we didn't want to go through the trouble of getting belay tested and personally I just prefer it, so this review might not totally relate to the roped climbs. Most of my frustrations came down to 2 main things: the difficulty grading system and the wall height. The height of the bouldering walls is quite high, which is really desirable in a lot of gyms as it gives the oppurtunity for longer climbs, however I noticed that every. Single. Climb. Ended all the way up at the top (maybe 12-15 feet up? I didn't measure). For an experienced climber this may be no big deal and again, desirable, but for someone who is just starting to get into climbing, and doesn't even know how to properly fall without hurting themselves, this is down-right dangerous. It honestly made no sense to me why the easier climbs, or even SOME of the easier climbs couldn't be made to end 3 or 4 feet lower. I've heard a lot of people have gotten hurt here and I'm not surprised. Secondly is the grading system. Nearly every gym in the nation and every single outdoor climbing destination uses the same grading scale. From easiest to hardest it ranges from V0 to V17, with most people climbing somewhere between V0-V10. For whatever reason Peak chose to use 5 different colors to annotate these grade in lieu of the regular system. This meant that for someone trying to find a V0 to climb, 2 out of every 3 climbs in the same "grade" was at least a full grade harder than they were looking for. This was the most frustrating part for me as I was looking for a V3 to climb in order to warm up and suddenly I was tensing up and grunting and struggling on something that was much to hard for me to be warming up on. The worst part about this grading system was it ruined any real chance at tracking progress. It's like if a sprinter could only measure their 1/4 mile time in 10 second increments. Even if you're super close to breaking into the next color difficulty of climbs you still feel like your stuck in the green ones or whatever. At the end of the day the facility is nice and well kept, the employees seemed kind, but the gym didn't seem to lend itself well to anyone that wasn't super comfortable with their climbing ability. read more

Yes. This gym is my go to for the Richmond area. The setting is great and the competition walls are absolutely amazing and so much fun. The environment/community is very welcoming and laid back feeling. Plus when your done climbing you can grab a beer and take a birds eye view of the other climbers. The only reason I knocked off a star is because of the lack of a climbing specific training area (i.e. system wall, campus board and hang board). However, there are other pieces of training equipment such as treadmills, TRX, etc. Overall, great gym! read more
