Letting your pet go is never easy and I am grateful with how Peace for Paws helped us through this painful process. The website had wonderful suggestions on how to set your pet up in a relaxing area, how to handle the other pets maybe wanting to say goodbye, and what to expect throughout the process. I'll be the first to admit that I was absolutely terrified the day Dr. Serena Olson came to my house. With a previous pet and a different vet, we had a terrible experience with in home euthanasia. My princess Zoey was ready to transition and even though it was the most difficult decision, Dr. Serena helped make it less difficult. My daughter flew in from PA to spend Zoey's last days. Being at home with my other tuxedo cat, was best for him as well. They spent 13 years together and although he was there, I believe they got to say their goodbyes. Dr. Sarena Olsen made a difficult, heartbreaking act easy for me and painless for my beloved 20-year-old cat Mollie. Mollie was the biggest scaredy-cat on the planet. She was afraid of everything; I would joke that we were two neurotic old ladies propping each other up. Dr Serena was absolutely amazing! I say this with a broken heart but the blow that I had to endure was softened as much as possible by her warmth, professionalism, and caring attitude. No words can express how sad of a day this was for me, but Dr Serena came in and allowed me and my daughter to hold my little girl without feeling rushed until we were ready to say goodbye. My ONLY regret involving the use of Dr. Sarena's Peace for Paws service is having taken SO LONG to give her a well-deserved PERFECT review. There isn't a single detail she missed, not one service offered that wasn't needed and deeply appreciated, not one procedure performed that failed to meet the highest standards of Veterinary end-of-life care for my sweet Bam-Bam. My 17-year-old Chihuahua Bammy had slowly devolved to where he was no longer our pet, he was a 24/7 patient. He was cursed with one of the worst possible afflictions to befall a dog, the dreaded Canine Cognitive Disorder Syndrome (CCDS), also known as "Doggie Dementia." His diagnosis came nearly 2-1/2 years prior, just shy of turning 15. I have no desire to minimize what other Doggie Daddies and Mommies witness happening to their beloved FurrBabies as fatal diseases and accidents ALL result in the loss of their one-and-only. But CCDS is particularly cruel in that, just like human Alzheimer's or Dementia, their bodies are mostly okay, but they quite literally lose their minds. They look at you like a stranger--they get lost in their home, at times getting "stuck" in a corner being unable to find their way out. Just prior to me feeling the need to call Dr. Sarena, The Bamster was out in the yard to do his business. He stopped and froze as if not knowing where he was--then whine-cried such a pathetic sound while hanging his little head as if pleading with me to say, "Papa, I can't take this torture anymore. Please let me go." In that instant, I realized all the extraordinary things being done to (or for) Bam-Bam were to keep him around just a little longer for US, not for HIM. I called Dr. Sarena ONLY AFTER reading scores of 5-star reviews heaping praise on her. That initial call sealed the deal--her compassionate tone and words of understanding and comfort were an almost instant sense of relief that I was doing the right thing and had contacted the right person. Two days later, the good doctor arrived. For those who've never been through euthanizing a beloved animal, there are no easy ways around what's coming. But the alternative is to take your loved one to a Vet Clinic with ice cold, antiseptic exam tables and all the frightening sounds that come with a Vet's office. That said, the procedures do not vary. There's no need to cover the details in this review. If you have questions, PLEASE ask Dr. Sarena. The doctor arrived on time. She was immediately comforting, knowing her mere presence in our home was something we ultimately dreaded. She introduced herself to us and Bam-Bam, in a loving manner only a true dog lover would understand. Her soothing words and gentle manner set us all at ease. Once the IV was in and working to her satisfaction, she suggested I take as much time as I needed to say goodbye. (I'm bawling again just thinking of that moment.) When I gave her the okay, she told me what to expect--how my sweet boy would react to the drugs and take his last breath. I read once--and it had a profound impact on me--that WE OWE IT TO OUR FOREVER LOYAL AND BELOVED PETS TO BE THERE WHEN THEY LEAVE THIS EARTHLY REALM. Now is not the time to "spare ourselves" the difficulty of the moment, choosing to leave them to a stranger as they transition. I thank God above I was holding Bam-Bam, sweetly assuring him he was going to be okay as he ultimately took his last breath and life passed from him. Dr. Sarena simply said, "He's gone," and excused herself to allow me to make a complete and total spectacle of myself. (Once again, sobbing while writing this review, recalling that excruciatingly painful, yet necessary, final act of love.) Assuming the doctor knew the time was right (based on me finally ending my bellowing) she came back in with a sweet little basket with a white linen draped inside for placing Bam-Bam's body. She asked if I would like to lay him inside, which I did. Now the kicker--she asked if I would like to carry my little angel to her vehicle which she had backed up to our front door. Thankfully I said yes. The open hatchback revealed a simple memorial for Bammy with flowers and welcoming decor for a beloved pet who would be taking his last car ride ever. She'd thought of EVERYTHING. I was flabbergasted. Euthanasia translated means, "A good death." Dr. Sarena masterfully provided my little old man just that. As I STILL am wiping tears from my eyes--good tears--I will be eternally grateful to her for making his trip across the Rainbow Bridge on his way to Puppy Lake such a beautifully spiritual experience. read more
