Absolutely Disappointed and Outraged with Dr. Tom Updike's Service We recently had a deeply concerning experience with Dr. Tom Updike that left us feeling disrespected, dismissed, and completely unsupported in a time of urgent need. Late one evening, around 10:30 PM, we called in desperation regarding a goat on our farm who was showing serious signs of a possible urinary blockage -- straining to urinate, hiding under objects, and clearly in significant pain. As any responsible animal owner would, we reached out for professional help immediately. Instead of receiving concern, compassion, or even a shred of professionalism, we were coldly told by Dr. Updike that "it's 10:30 at night and I have to be up early. I will not come in at this time to look at a goat." This response was not only unprofessional but deeply inhumane. Regardless of the hour, we were reaching out because a living animal was suffering, and we expected -- at the very least -- acknowledgment of the urgency and some kind of direction or advice. Instead, we were met with blatant disregard and a complete lack of empathy. If you're looking for a vet who genuinely cares for animals at all hours -- as their profession demands -- we strongly recommend looking elsewhere. Based on our experience, this vet service is unreliable in emergencies, dismissive of urgent animal health concerns, and prioritizes their sleep over the well-being of the animals they are supposed to serve. We will not be trusting Dr. Updike or this practice with any of our animals again. read more

We have had nothing but awesome treatment for our animals, from young to elderly. The veterinary staff listen to all your concerns and address them accordingly and give advice for further treatment and health. All staff are very nice and make sure you have what's needed for your furbabies. read more

Reading the reviews got me scared about coming to this place. Then I read them and it was mainly people complaining about the receptionists, they're old reviews so I'm guessing they have new receptionists because the ones I met were nice. They neutered my dog and this was one of the most affordable vets and most importantly, they were very good and professional. The only thing some other vets do that I wish this vet did was call to give updates on how the surgery went or have the vet explain post op procedures but other than that this clinic is affordable and the vets are very experienced. read more

5 minutes ago NEW I have attempted to switch from my current vet to the Paxton Vet Clinic multiple times throughout the last few years, everytime I am told the same thing "We currently are not accepting new patients." On July 10th I called in the early morning to try to get my sick dog in, and trust me you were the last resort cuz my previous experiences trying to get in here, and when the receptionist answered she asked about my dogs symptoms and what breed she was, after I told her EVERYTHING she then decided to tell me that they were not accepting new patients and that was the end of the conversation.. Which is weird cuz I was just speaking to someone on Facebook about your clinic and how they were able to get their brand new kittens in literally 4 days later! My dog passed away that evening cuz we were unable to find someone local to care for her. It feels like the receptionist picks and chooses what breed/animal to accept and that is just wrong. To the owner: either have your receptionist learn empathy or fire her cuz she is going to tank your business. read more

I have been very pleased with the care my dogs have received here. I have always been treated with courtesy. I have been able to see the vet on short notice as well as scheduled appointments. We really like Dr Updike and the other vet (forgot his name), but every single time you call, June, the receptionist is always so rude. You'd think being a receptionist, they'd have someone who's professional, kind, and caring, but she is far from any of these things. Then, during the Covid pandemic, I waited 45 minutes outside the checkout window before someone came to help me. (I wasn't there for an appointment, but had called an hour prior for a medication refill) I called and spoked to June twice letting her know I was outside waiting and she kept telling me someone would "eventually" be with me. Finally, on the third call, I got someone else who came to the window and helped me immediately. When they opened the window, June was sitting by the computer, never turned to open the window, apologize, or anything of that nature. Then, we called one time because it was time to put one of our fur babies down and June was so unsympathetic, it was heartbreaking. We asked if they did home visits to euthanize because our dog had bad dementia, and June acted as though our question was unreasonable and ridiculous. She's truly a cold hearted person. Again, the vets are nice, the waiting room is an accident waiting to happen being so small, but overall, June is the reason I'd never go back. Talk about unprofessional, rude, and mean. Paxton Vet Clinic is a wonderful place! All the vets are very professional and personable, and their love for animals is obvious. The staff is great too. They do all they can for the community so far as helping with the stray animal population. They are also affordable, with prices much lower than other vets in the area. I see in some of the reviews the reviewers are complaining about being put on hold for long periods of time when they call. That is because they are VERY busy. Still, they do a good job of scheduling and I've never had too long a wait in the waiting area. I can't recommend this place highly enough. read more

I can not say enough about Paxton Vet Clinic. Whenever I need them, they are there with incredible compassion and the knowledge is amazing. The sheer volume of people who entrust their pets to the staff and vets is a true testament to this facility. The phone calls are constant and people are in and out of the office from 7am until they are finished. Dr. Walker and Dr. Updike have treated our cats, dogs, and cattle as well. The prices are very reasonable and I would venture to say the best around. The staff answer all your questions and if they are unable to help you, you can rest a sure they will be able to point you to a facility that can. I have on multiple occasions used their facility for vaccinations, spay or neuter, or having to do the unthinkable....putting a pet down. Some of the reviews on here do not accurately reflect this business. I wouldn't take my animals anywhere else. read more

I don't want to give a single star to this place! The google listing associated with this vet says they do emergency veterinary services their own web site states if your pet is in need of critical care they will treat the animal as if it was part of their own family... well they must let their family pets die because they could care less if an animal is dying! Let me explain.. woke up on 6/15 to find my cat extremely ill and with no clue why I rush him to this vet (the one vet in this area everyone has always said is so "great") I pull up to a number you have to call because the waiting room is closed due to Covid I call the number a lady answers and immediately wants to put me on hold I tell her I have an animal emergency with my cat I think he's dying I need help THIS WOMAN SNAPS BACK AT ME! She said well we are busy and we are not an emergency vet. I proceeded to tell her that that's not what information on google and on their own website says and she tells me well that's not exactly true CALLING ME A LIAR ALL WHILE MY CAT IS DYING NEXT TO ME AND MY KIDS ARE IN THE BACK SEAT CRYING BECAUSE THEIR CAT IS SICK! She refuses to get a vet to come look at my cat. I leave and rushed my cat to another vet where he died and was told by that vet that if he had been place on a IV and given fluids about 30 min earlier he might have been saved. 30 min earlier I was sitting in this parking lot being called a liar! I use to use this clinic and absolutely loved taking my friend and companion to them for treatment they use to be just awesome. Oh and I'm a senior which of course should have nothing to do with this but it does. The last time I was there I had my older friend Heidi and had just rescued a 10 month old boxer. Since Heidi was also a boxer and was getting up there in age and knowing I was going to be devastated when I would lose her. That is why I took in my new friend Lily. Now to the last visit I don't even recall the vets name because after he came in to check her out he made the statement that she meaning Lily must feel like she's in a nursing home. I was appalled by his comments and couldn't wait to get out of there. I made no statement regarding his obviously rude and uncalled for statement. But today my friend Lily is showing signs of a seizure or stroke and after several attempts to get in to the Sports Vet in Savoy and the Student teaching facility at the U of I........only to find that they are only interested in money and me and not my friend. So I reached out to this facility.......well since Lily wasn't an active patient they just couldn't possibly see my friend! So recommendations on any of these facilities......the answer is absolutely not. If I could I would put them all out of business they only are interested in not your friend.......but just your money but .........they all do have that bedside manor once you get in to see one of them......don't they? read more

I will never again use this veterinary clinic. Horrible customer service. The receptionist(s) are rude and inconsiderate. Every time I call I am put on hold for an extremely long time even when I refuse. Twice I have asked for my pet's records to be faxed to a different veterinary clinic and both time the documents had not been faxed by appointment time and I was forced to call Paxton again which caused delay in the evaluation and treatment of my pet. By far the worst experience occurred when I brought my Great Pyrenees to them with a broken leg (September 2013). They graciously accepted her on a Sunday, took x-rays and kept her overnight for observation. Early Monday morning I was told that their only course of action would be amputation, if I was interested in saving her leg she would need to go to the University of Illinois Small Animal Hospital. I drove an hour to pick her up and at this point I'm frantic to get her to a specialist so that she can be treated before the injury gets worse. However, before I could remove her from their premises they required payment for the x-rays and evaluation. Ok, whatever. I and my family have been loyal patients here for years, yet they want to further delay treatment of my dog just so they can get their money. I was upset but paid them. Then I asked if I could go back and get her and carry her out to my truck. They said no, they would bring her out the back door, so I pulled around to the back and got my truck ready and cranked up the AC cause it was a hot september day. Maybe 5-10 mins later a very young, very petite, female vet tech walks out the door alone carrying my 100# dog with her complete compound femoral fractured leg dangling below. I was livid. We left that place and will never return! read more

I have had 2 different dogs cared for by Paxton Veterinary clinic since 2003. The Vet doctors have not only been knowledgeable, but have been very caring for my dogs. The receptions have been courteous and have always had my dogs prescriptions ready when I called ahead. read more

The Receptionist isn't very friendly or professional. I am surprised that the company would want such an unpleasant face to represent their office. She is the first person people see when they come into the business and unfortunately it is not empathetic kind or professional. The doctors and vet techs were great though!
