First timers. We went for Friday fish fry and got there by 4:20, and the place filled up fast after we arrived. Decor was cute, but seating was horrid: hard wood benches and chairs mean you're gonna get up and walk around just due to pain or legs going numb. Just kidding, this is solid pizza no matter how you slice it (see what I did there;) Our family has been visiting this area of WI for 4 years now and this is one of the places we look forward to patronizing. Friendly service and darn good pizza! They have several specialty pizzas and will also let you build your own. Are they short-staffed? Yes, but who isn't these days. The ones on staff do the best they can to make this transparent to customers. One caveat to this review...the business is up for sale, so I could be updating this review next summer. read more

Good food. Prices are a little high. Being from the east coast, it was nice to see somewhere have a Ny style crust. It was probably the most accurate one I've had out here. I was a little confused since I expected the other pizza to be little square slices but it was a thin crust pizza cut in 8. No complaints for me. The Brooklyn came with 3 toppings but the ones I chose didn't do it justice. Probably would be good with pepperoni. The margarita pizza was not what I usually call margarita but it was very good non the less. Appetizer sampler was on point. This is our second time here. We come to the area to hunt and this has become a favorite. The decorations are fun. Rustic cabin up north feel. A canoe hangs in the middle of the seating area. Their pizza is amazing but being on a diet I went with the grilled buffalo chicken. Definitely could have used more buffalo sauce. Chicken was a tad on the dry side but was still good. My son went with the buffalo wings and fries. I've never seen him devour wings so fast. He said they were spicy but not over the top. The fries were your standard thin cut fries. Now the staff is amazing. Definitely understaffed this evening but you would never know they way they're flying through the tables. If you're in the area stop in and get some pizza. I was very excited to finally try Paul's Pizza Den. We've driven by many times on our way to and from other locations in the area but never had the pleasure of stopping but today was our day! Atmosphere: Cozy and cabin-esqe. Service: Servers were friendly. But ordering, receiving food and beverages, etc. was so incredibly slow. Our server never came back to see if we were ok on drinks or to ask how the food was tasting. I had to flag the server down to get a water. And I swear when the bill came she just threw it down and ran off. Food: We ordered an Antipasto salad to start. It was large enough to share and thought it tasted really good as we devoured the whole thing. For pizza, it was hard to choose because 1. All of the pizzas have the most adorable names like Panda Bear and the Hula Bear 2. All the pizzas had toppings we enjoy. So we decided on the Blazin Bear. As the name implies it has some spicy toppings like banana peppers and jalapenos that give it a little kick along with sausage, mushrooms and olives. We ordered a medium to share which was more than enough for 2 people. The toppings on the pizza were a good combination. The structure of the pizza left something to be desired. The outer edges were crispy but the bottom center of the pizza was not. It was more soggy than crisp. Now it could be because of the toppings, too many or too watery toppings can cause that. But I'm not certain and was just disappointed by this. Overall great tasting pie but could be a little crispier. Even though the service and pizza had some flaws, I will return to the Paul's to eat. I love pizza and will chalk these issues up to a busy Saturday night with a small staff. Certainly it's worth a second stop to try another pie! read more

We usually love coming here, especially for their Pizza Fries. The other night was an exception to this. First, coming in a 9:00 pm they said the kitchen was closing, but then said we could order. Closing at 9:00 pm on a Friday night? Anyway, we ordered our Pizza Fry. There was no garlic butter sauce underneath the cheese. If there was any, we couldn't taste it. Then all the cheese was glopped on the middle and not spread out to the end of the crusts like it usually was. Whoever was making it was certainly not wanting to do so! Then the waitress was busy talking to another customer for 10 minutes and we had to get up and walk over to her and tell her we wanted our bill. Ate here for dinner with the family. We had the Smokey Bear pizza, which is a delicious and unique pizza with cranberries, wild rice, great sauce and other toppings. My daughter loved her spaghetti and meatball. We'll definitely look to come back next time we're in the area. read more

We were vacationing in the area a couple of weeks ago and did carry out from Paul's one night. We are from Chicago and my kids work at a pizza place so we are very picky. That being said, Paul's makes a really good pizza. The sausage was great and we also got the meatball sandwich which was also very good. Also be a where, two people did not get there Credit cards back that night (Saturday). Way up here, restaurant options can be a little sparse, so it's a good thing we've got the Pizza Den to keep us fed. My father-in-law owns some property in Mikana, and on holiday weekends we often head up north and use it as a base of operations for exploring the area. Since it's one of only a few options, that means we've sampled a fair bit of Pizza Den's offerings. The menu is split into pizza and not pizza. I can appreciate the frankness. There are a variety of unusual combinations available on the pizzas, including some ingredients that you wouldn't expect in a million years (sauerkraut? cranberries?), but since I'm with the family it means I'm stuck to the relatively more traditional offerings when I'm up here. Those options are, of course, very good. The sauce is tasty and has a hint of sweetness to it and the toppings are a step above your average pizza joint's. The crust can be a bit floppy and thin, but they wouldn't be the first pizza place to have that problem. The ribs are as tasty as you'll get at any Italian-inspired place. They're pretty tender and you get a great portion. The garlic butter-brushed strombolis also come highly recommended. I suspect there's not much you can go wrong with on this menu. Even though it's a bit of a touristy place in the northwoods, I felt at home here. The staff makes sure you're well taken care of. They're casual, but still attentive. It can get a bit loud when it's busy, but never to the point where it distracts from hearing the person across the table. read more

This is an excellent pizza place whether you are in Chicago or the north woods. Birchwood is a nice small town and Paul's Pizza Den is a nice compliment to the town. They have their fair share of tourist but are very popular with the locals as well which is always a good sign. The have good pizza and very unusual toppings and combinations. We come here often- Food is always good! The service is usually pretty slow and small town. Do not go here if you are in a hurry. Try the Bloody Mary bar on the weekend. Homemade apple pie shots are amazing. Watch out for the locals trying to serve their own drinks behind the bar like they own the place. read more

We were there on Labor Day weekend; it was busy, but not ridiculous. We were a party of nine...4 adults, 4 kids, and a baby. Once we ordered our food, we waited 1 hour 45 minutes for our food, with no explanation, apology, etc. At one pointy husband went to the front and asked to speak with the manager about why our food took so long. The owner came over and said "Too bad. It's Labor Day, that's what you get." When we were leaving, we asked our waitress why it took so long and how it was crazy that no one offered an apology or anything. She actually argued with us and said that it didn't really take that long. We knew exactly what time we arrived and exactly how long we waited. We have a cabin in the area and looked forward to Pail's Pizza Den, but we will certainly NOT be returning. read more
