Paul Douglas Forest Preserve is one of my FAVORITE places for birdwatching! While the trails are pretty flat and don't offer a challenging hike, entering at Grassy Ridge Meadow gives you access to multiple bird habitats. You can see birds that like wet thickets (common yellowthroat), marsh-dwellers (marsh wren), birds that prefer ponds, lakes, and streams (great blue heron), birds of the forest (eastern towhee), and species that nest in wildflower prairies (eastern meadowlark). You can even get a look at heron and cormorant nests at the right time of year. Of course, with all the small birds, you get a few raptors, too! The trails are better for biking or in-line skating than real hiking, because they're mostly paved and have little variety. Kids will be bored, and maybe worse, they are likely to be buzzed by red-winged blackbirds if they stray too close to a nest. For me, getting buzzed is a plus, but it might make your tot cry. The couple of unpaved trails are not marked well and aren't tended well, either. I didn't follow any of them to completion because the tall grasses were growing over them in some places, so I worried about stepping on a nest or a snake. There's also a soccer field near the parking lot, but it seems a silly place for it since a badly-aimed kick will cost you your ball (unless you disregard the signs and try to wade into the swamp, that is--not a good idea). To sum it up, come here to birdwatch, bring your binoculars, and leave the kids at home.

This is a huge forest preserve with amazing bike or walking paths. It's a great way to spend an afternoon for a nice relaxing walk with great views

Great paved trail for a walk or run anytime of the year! I've only been here once but I plan to come more often; hopefully I'll have some wildlife sightings the next times I come. The forest preserve is very peaceful even thought it's right next to Central Road. There are a good amount of rolling hills so running/biking may get a bit tiring but those Heidi Klum legs will totally be worth it!

The scenery at any type of year is also beautiful. Positives: Beautiful scenery; plenty of areas to park; bathrooms available but closed due to COVID; around busy streets so you are not alone in the middle of nowhere, busy; near a hospital Negatives: It crosses a lot of streets, I know that it's not easy building bridges over every street, but it does add concern for safety; not as many spots with benches to take a seat (not a big deal); part of the path runs along a busy street, which may be a bit dangerous for some areas It's a very pretty area and I enjoyed the path.

I'm sure there are other easy entries as well -Nice long trails for the good workout/run -Decent for biking -Good markers guiding you along the trail The bad: -Most of it is out in the open. Doesn't have that enclosed forest boulevard feel -Again, since it's open, it gets unbearable to walk after 11 due to the sun and heat -Wild grass growth all over the main trail path -Markers have no distance mentioned on them. That's just sad now.. -Lot of fake white stone gravel everywhere. Just why.. I've been to some good unpaved hikes in NC and none of them have this Decent trail overall but you're better off trying to find some other place. I need that nice cool natural forest feel, like the NC trails. If you know of any such place, let me know!!

I must say this place Busse Woods is large, sprawling, neat, clean, and impressive (it's 3558 acres in fact). I think I knew that it was sprawling driving along Higgins Rd, but pulling in, you can see how well laid out and maintained the premises are.  It would be quite nice to revisit during winter and the change of fall colors also. Grove 5 in particular is an extra nice picnic grove in that it has a shelter and is near (540' to be exact per the website!) a nice and accessible restroom building.  The shelter is pretty large with a capacity of 100 people.  It's located in a section called Busse Forest-South and which comprises Groves 5 - 16.  Of those 12 groves, 4 have shelters, but only Grove 5 is close to an accessible restroom.  So, our family member apparently picked out the best grove, good job!  Busse Woods has 11 sections like Busse Forest-South, so it's massive with a lot of picnic location and other leisure activity options.  Anyway, go to their website for more info, but I was pretty impressed.  Busse Woods includes a Busse Lake as well as a 7 mile trail.  Big thumbs up for this Cook County Forest Preserve!
