The Toronto office for Patterned Concrete is on the south side of Supertest which is a small industrial street between Steeles and Finch west of Dufferin in the Downsview area of North York.
The "office" is more of a show space as there is an office but most of the land is dedicated to showing you the examples of patterned concrete that they can provide. Patterns, colors and other hardware examples are here so there are ways of visualizing what you may like. Here at the show space you can get an idea of what you may like but trying to actually apply it to your space mentally may be a bit more challenging since that involves imagination.
My wife and I approached Patterned Concrete about doing work on our home. If memory serves we went back in October of 2018 for work that would be eventually performed in 2019 being that the upcoming weather and season would not be optimal for beginning this type of project.
We spoke to Connie who is one of the managers at PC and ultimately it was an absolute pleasure to deal with and speak to her. My wife and I were looking for some major work for our home or at least what we'd consider major work being that it was around the entirety of our property.
What we were looking for was two plain concrete pads near both back corners of our property, new concrete at the back of the house on both sides flanking our elevated deck, walkways on either side of our property, a new front walkway adjacent to the front of the house, a new front walkway to the sidewalk, a new driveway and last but not least a new porch and stairs.
Basically we were asking for all existing concrete work and patio stones to be removed and replaced by new concrete. Our old existing stairs were never done properly and were cracking, our old concrete work at the time was done on the cheap because at the time, we didn't have the means to do it the way PC would have done it so we went in knowing we'd just live with what we had for as long as we could get by. Our original driveway which was asphalt was done poorly by a local company I won't mention but surely would never recommend to anybody. The day the old asphalt was removed I could see how bad it was done, thinly and because the base (gravel) wasn't compressed properly the thin layer of asphalt not long after originally being placed started to warp and groove.
Now was the time to do it right and do it the way we wanted and knowing that concrete is better than asphalt as far as longevity I knew that this was going to be the kind of job that would most likely never have to be redone again in our lifetimes.
My wife selected the patterns and colors because realistically she's the one with the eye for style. Me, while I had my opinions I defer most of these types of choices to her. I just want proper solid ground to walk on. Joe, the owner of PC had come over one day with Connie throw some ideas out there for the design of our work. Connie had conceptualized drawings of our house and what the job would look like and Joe had a great idea of adding bands to our driveways and front walkways. This broke up the monotony of the herringbone brick pattern my wife had selected and added some good visual breaks to the front of the property.
Our work didn't start until late April of 2019. Ultimately it was completed around the end of June. It may sound like 2 months is a long time and let me tell you it is but between the wet weather we had and other things that just delayed work on any given day it wasn't a great experience to have to wait so long for the completion of this project. There's complications sure and the bad weather with excessive rain in May was the immediate culprit of these delays.
The project got messy as would be expected. Demolition of existing concrete and patio stone removal exposes dirt. The next stage is having to dig to the desired level and with all the rain we had pooling water on dirt creating pools of mud. Eventually gravel and base was place and then compressed using a variety of methods. Next comes the wooden forms and fiberglass rebar and then eventually the pour and in our case because we had bands, pours plural. The coloring process is basically powdered dyes. Teams of workers are pouring and troweling while others are stamping the patterns. It's a sight to see up to a dozen guys working at once as a team to mix, pour, wheel barrel, dye, trowel, stamp and treat so much concrete in such little time.
In the end the result is in these photos of my home and how the finished product comes to fruition. It was a long process to complete but the completed work is absolutely amazing. I have to say that Patterned Concrete knows their craft and have a reputation for being the best in the trade at what they do. Connie and Joe are dedicated to making sure we were completely satisfied and I have to say that we are.
I would highly recommend Patterned Concrete for their professionalism and their help in improving our home. read more
