Below are things I wanted to know before choosing a contractor; maybe it will be helpful for you. Our situation: 100+ yr old home with current boiler in basement. We recently insulated our walk-up attic - that would both freeze and melt items stored there - with closed-cell spray foam (more research there), added drywall and will use it for storage. This is where the air handler and ERV (for ventilation) went. Our upstairs is now ducted, with one vent running through a closet on the 2nd floor to 1st floor. We also added a Mitsibishi floor mount unit and a ceiling cassette on 1st floor. So, we had a VARIETY of equipment installed, requiring a contractor experienced in not only ducting, but mini-split installs with both a ceiling cassette and floor mount unit. We did not want the large wall mount mini split units. Our walls/ceilings are PLASTER, (metal wire mesh and cement-based): cutting them is a JOB. And, we wanted the floor mount unit RECESSED. COST - James was in-line with our other bids, which came in between 27k and 39k, largely depending on equipment recommended, with ceiling cassettes costing more. Many contractors simply would not install them, and wanted to run ducts in the corners of all upstairs rooms to first floor, which to us was a last resort. COMMUNICATION - James is very responsive to texts, emails, and even more importantly, he is a fantastic communicator. He is very calm, not pushy, explains things in an easy-to-understand way that clearly shows he knows his business. I actually told my husband after he left for the first time, "I think we may have found our guy" just based on his personality and knowledge. He's likeable, which isn't a requirement, but definitely helps. EXPERTISE - This is what truly sets James apart. Our needs were fairly complex, requiring interior ducting, 2 outside units with exterior line sets, and recessed ceiling units, but also RECESSING the inside floor unit into an interior wall. We've overseen several renovation projects recently and could tell these guys knew what they were doing. Also, they were perfectionists, and paid attention to details you don't often find with contractors. DEPENDABILITY - Not a single missed appt. Showed up on time with clear communication. The job took a week. He also helped with Masssave paperwork. They cleaned up after themselves each day, which we appreciated. KNOWLEDGE - Extremely versed in Mitsibishi equipment. He's a Diamond Contractor, which extends our warranty, but we'd have chosen him regardless. Every question I had about these units (cassette and floor unit operation, air handler, ERV, outdoor units, thermostats...) he knew the answer to. When I researched anything specific online, from multiple and trusted sources, I found the info he'd given me to be correct. I trust his knowledge and I don't automatically do that. One example: our ceiling cassette has an internal thermostat and it's off by several degrees regularly. I researched it and found we likely need an external thermostat separate from the unit to measure the room's temp. I texted James a photo showing the inaccurate reading and his immediate reply, "you need an external thermostat. I'll install one." That's what I'm talking about. INTEGRITY - Example: After the permit inspector left, James explained his philosophy on inspections. Each city apparently has different requirements. He learned several years ago how strict one particular city was, requiring a blower test to determine air tightness and the passing score was 4% or less. He got 4.1% and city wouldn't pass it. This required a lot more time/energy to go through everything and another test and more $$. So, now James says to his guys, "We install to the strictest inspection every time, regardless of the specific city's requirements, so we don't ever have to redo anything." In our case, the city didn't need a blower test but if they did, I feel confident we would have passed! I don't often take time to write reviews, esp this lengthly, but I felt it was warranted here. Finding an HVAC contractor is HARD; it's time-consuming and complicated. And a lot of money. Three years of research finally led us to James and now, looking back, it was worth the wait and headaches in research. I would highly recommend anyone in the market for a new HVAC, especially if it involves Mitsibishi and especially ESPECIALLY if it involves recessing any equipment like ceiling cassettes or wall units, to consider James Wu. He and his team are uniquely skilled in their work.

All seemed knowledgeable but Spectrum Heating and Cooling was the clear choice for two reasons: first, the price for a top-tier brand was roughly $6,000 less than second-tier brands at the others. Second, Joe, the owner, was personable, transparent, and clearly honest. He was the only one, for example, who first checked into the cost of replacing parts for my old system before proposing a new one. He was also the most consistent about following up. Two of his competitors with the most expensive bids had fewer years of experience than Spectrum yet they dropped the ball on communications, forgetting to provide estimates on deadline. To me, this spoke to possible issues down the line with reliability. Joe answered all of my (many) questions, followed up with a timely proposal, and followed through with a quick, easy, hassle-free installation. This company may be smaller and less flashy than his competitors but I suspect the reason he doesn't need to be so aggressive in advertising is that he is so professional and competitive in his pricing that he wins customers based on great word of mouth. Called only to be told we'd get NO help or support for two days. Our entire house is only around 55 degrees now and we can't safely leave. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. I am so unbelievably upset. We called Friday asking for help and now here we are, heatless with two kids home during a blizzard. ----------------------------------- I waited a long time to write this review because we gave SumZero many opportunities to correct ongoing issues that have existed since day one of installation (a few years back). Unfortunately, we continue to have persistent problems with both heating and cooling. We have two young kids and at this point it is unacceptable these issues haven't been resolved. In the summer, our back room with vaulted ceilings is consistently 5+ degrees warmer than the rest of the house. In the winter, that same room is always about 5 degrees colder. The main living areas also had issues for the first few years, struggling to maintain temperature in the summer and leaving the house humid and unable to hold the thermostat setting some days. After extensive back-and-forth, SumZero ultimately replaced the entire outdoor unit, stating we must have received a "lemon." That replacement was installed this past summer, yet the temperature imbalance in our back living room remains unchanged this winter. Separately, we were provided a mini-split for our partial basement living room. That unit is unreliable and often does not work at night. The settings are correct, we have tried power cycling and resetting the breaker, and it still works only intermittently. It has been set to 68°F for days, yet the room is currently 56°F with no warm air blowing, despite the unit being on. My husband and I have contacted SumZero countless times over multiple seasons and years. Even after replacing major equipment, we still do not have a system that can adequately heat and cool our home as promised. The heat pump system installed through MassSave has never performed adequately in the years since installation. I understand that some older heat pumps can struggle in extreme conditions, but high-efficiency systems (like one we should have received via MassSave rebate with SumZero) should be able to handle New England winters and hot, humid summers., from my research. Ours cannot do either consistently. At this point, we are exhausted from having to address these issues every few months. While the customer service representatives and technicians are polite, no one has been able to properly fix the system. I strongly recommend going with another company if you want to avoid a long-term headache. Photos show mini split remote temp set to 68 but room thermostat shows 56, this is a common occurrence. Other photo shows main house ecobee (new thermostat for heat pump unit) set to 70 (has been set to this for months) but it's only at 65 in reality and continues to go down. The back room with vaulted ceilings thermostat currently reads 59 even though it should be at 70.

I would rather pay a premium to ensure it is done right and the quality is there. SumZero does that and more. We called, and within a day, they sent one of their experts, Raphael G., to quote us for ductless mini-splits to outfit our home. He was very thorough, offering different options that would work for our living room and bedrooms, which are boiling and humid during the summertime. He made the process extremely easy for us to understand and was willing to work directly with our condo association to accommodate their requests. We're still waiting to get them approved by our condo association, as there is a lot of work involved in obtaining approval. However, so far, the experience has been nothing but easy and painless.
